Connection between quasi-symmetric magnetic fields and anisotropic pressure equilibria in fusion plasmas

The stellarator as a concept of magnetic confinement fusion requires careful design to confine particles effectively. A design possibility is to equip the magnetic field with a property known as quasisymmetry. Though it is generally believed that a steady-state quasisymmetric equilibrium can only be exact locally (unless the system has a direction of continuous symmetry such as the tokamak), we suggest in this work that a change in the equilibrium paradigm can ameliorate this limitation. We demonstrate that there exists a deep physical connection between quasisymmetry and magnetostatic equilibria with anisotropic pressure, extending beyond the isotropic pressure equilibria commonly considered.

Phases and phase-transitions in quasisymmetric configuration space

We explore the structure of the space of quasisymmetric configurations identifying them by their magnetic axes, described as 3D closed curves. We demonstrate that this topological perspective divides the space of all configurations into well-separated quasisymmetric phases. Each phase is characterized by the self-linking number (a topological invariant), defining different symmetry configurations (quasi-axisymmetry or quasi-helical symmetry). The phase-transition manifolds correspond to quasi-isodynamic configurations. By considering some models for closed curves (most notably torus unknots), general features associated with these phases are explored. Some general criteria are also built and leveraged to provide a simple way to describe existing quasisymmetric designs. This constitutes the first step in a program to identify quasisymmetric configurations with a reduced set of functions and parameters, to deepen understanding of configuration space, and offer an alternative approach to stellarator optimization that begins with the magnetic axis and builds outward.

Measures of quasisymmetry for stellarators

Quasisymmetric stellarators are an attractive class of optimised magnetic confinement configurations. The property of quasisymmetry (QS) is in practice limited to be approximate, and thus the construction requires measures that quantify the deviation from the exact property. In this paper we study three measure candidates used in the literature, placing the focus on their origin and the comparison of their forms. The analysis shows clearly the lack of universality in these measures. As these metrics do not directly correspond to any physical property (except when exactly QS), optimisation should employ additional physical metrics for guidance. Especially close to QS minima, treating QS metrics through inequality constraints so that additional physics metrics dominate optimisation is suggested. The impact of different quasisymmetric measures on optimisation is presented through an example.

Calculating RF current condensation with self-consistent ray-tracing

By exploiting the nonlinear amplification of the power deposition of RF waves, current condensation promises new pathways to the stabilisation of magnetic islands. We present a numerical analysis of current condensation, coupling a geometrical optics treatment of wave propagation and damping to a thermal diffusion equation solver in the island. Taking into account the island geometry and relativistic damping, previous analytical theory can be made more precise and specific scenarios can be realistically predicted. With this more precise description, bifurcations and associated hysteresis effects could be obtained in an ITER-like scenario at realistic parameter values. Moreover, it is shown that dynamically varying the RF wave launching angles can lead to hysteresis and help to avoid the nonlinear shadowing effect.

Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Quasisymmetry

A necessary and sufficient set of conditions for a quasisymmetric magnetic field in the form of constraint equations is derived from first principles. Without any assumption regarding the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium of the plasma, conditions for quasisymmetry are constructed starting from the single-particle Lagrangian to leading order. The conditions presented in the paper are less restrictive than the set recently obtained by Burby et al. [arXiv:1912.06468], and could facilitate ongoing efforts towards investigating the existence of global quasisymmetric MHD equilibria. It is also shown that quasisymmetry implies the existence of flux surfaces, regardless of whether the field corresponds to an MHD equilibrium.

RF current condensation in the presence of turbulent enhanced transport

Sharp temperature gradients in a magnetically confined plasma can lead to turbulent motion of the plasma. This turbulence in turn enhances the transport of heat across magnetic field lines. The enhanced transport impacts the temperature differential that can be sustained in magnetic islands between the island centre and its periphery. It is shown here that, by limiting this temperature differential, this enhanced transport can have a profound influence on the extent to which the RF current condensation effect stabilises the island growth. Interestingly, because the heat transport is no longer simply linear in the temperature gradient, the RF current condensation effect also exhibits entirely new hysteresis phenomena.

Solving the problem of overdetermination of quasisymmetric equilbrium solutions by near-axis expansions: I. Generalised force balance

It is well known that the process of construction of quasisymmetric magnetic fields in magnetostatic equilibrium with isotropic pressure suffers from the problem of overdetermination. This has led to the widespread belief that global quasisymmetric solutions are likely not to exist. We develop a general near-axis expansion procedure that does not rely on the assumption of magnetostatic equilibria with isotropic pressure. We then demonstrate that in equilibria with anisotropic pressure, it is possible to circumvent the problem of overdetermination and carry out the power-series solutions to higher order. This suggests, contrary to current belief, that the existence of globally quasisymmetric fields is likely if one relaxes the assumption of magnetostatic equilibria with isotropic pressure.

Solving the problem of overdetermination of quasisymmetric equilbrium solutions by near-axis expansions. II. Circular axis stellarators

We apply the near-axis expansion method for quasisymmetric magnetic fields with anisotropic pressure (developed in the companion paper, Part I [E. Rodriguez, A. Bhattacharjee, arXiv:2008.04715 (2020)]) to construct numerical solutions to circular axis stellarators. The solutions are found to second order in the distance from the axis, not possible in the standard Garren-Boozer construction [D. A. Garren and A. H. Boozer, Physics of Fluids B: Plasma Physics, 2822 (1991)], which assumes magnetostatic equilibria with isotropic pressure. In the limit of zero anisotropy, it is shown that a subset of coefficients can be chosen to avoid the overdetermination problem.

RF current condensation in magnetic islands and associated hysteresis phenomena

The nonlinear RF current condensation effect suggests that magnetic islands might be well controlled with broader deposition profiles than previously thought possible. To assess this possibility, a simplified energy deposition model in a symmetrised 1D slab geometry is constructed. By limiting the RF wave power that can be absorbed through damping, this model describes also the predicted hysteresis phenomena. Compared to the linear model, the nonlinear effects lead to larger temperature variations, narrower deposition widths, and more robust island stabilisation. Although, in certain regimes, the island centre can be disadvantageously shaded because of the nonlinear effects, in general, the RF condensation effect can take place, with current preferentially generated, advantageously, close to the island centre.

Supergravity in (2+1) dimensions from (3+1)-dimensional Supergravity

In the context of the formalism proposed by Stelle-West and Grignani-Nardelli, it is shown that Chern-Simons supergravity can be consistently obtained as a dimensional reduction of (3+1)-dimensional supergravity, when written as a gauge theory of the Poincare group. The dimensional reductions are consistent with the gauge symmetries, mapping (3+1)-dimensional Poincare supergroup gauge transformations onto (2+1)-dimensional Poincare supergroup ones.
