An Infrared view of the obscured AGN environment in NGC 4945

NGC 4945 harbors one of the nearest active galactic nuclei (AGN), which allows reaching high spatial resolution with the current observational facilities. The Seyfert 2 nucleus is deeply obscured by an edge-on disk with $A_V\sim14$, requiring infrared observations to study circumnuclear structures and the interstellar medium. In this work, we present an imaging and longslit spectroscopic study of the nuclear region with a spatial resolution of 6.5 pc, based on Flamingos-2 (F2) and T-ReCS data taken at the Gemini South observatory. We report sub-arcsecond photometric measurements of the nucleus in $J$, $H$ and $K_{\rm s}$ filters, and at larger apertures. We do not detect nuclear variability. The nuclear spectra confirm that even in $K$-band the AGN emission-line features are completely obscured by dust. We detect a circumnuclear disk in $K$-band as well as in the mid-infrared (MIR) $N$- and $Q_{\rm a}$-bands, with a radial scale length of $\sim$120 pc. The disk shows knots mostly in a ring-like arrangement that has been previously detected with HST Pa $α$ observations, indicating that these are deeply embedded, massive young star clusters. We present here the spectrum of one of the brightest and unresolved object (R$<5$pc), which we identify as a super star cluster candidate with M$_{K_{\rm s}} -16.6\pm0.4$. For the circumnuclear region, a detailed rotation curve allows to measure a nuclear mass of $M=(4.4 \pm 3)\times 10^{6} M_\odot$ within a radius of $\sim6.5$ pc. We also report the detection of hot dust ($\sim 1000$ K) out to a nuclear distance of 80 pc measured along the semi-major axis.

Spectroscopic study of the [OIII]$λ$5007 profile in Seyfert 1 galaxies

The spectra of active galactic nuclei usually exhibit wings in some emission lines, such as [OIII]$λλ$5007,4959, with these wings generally being blueshifted and related to strong winds and outflows. The aim of this work was to analyse the [OIII] emission lines in broad line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies in order to detect the presence of wings, and to study the [OIII] line properties and their possible connection with the central engine. In addition, we attempted to compare the black hole mass distribution in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blue-asymmetric [OIII] profiles. For this purpose, we carried out a spectroscopic study of a sample of 45 nearby southern BLS1 galaxies from the 6 Degree Field Galaxy survey. The [OIII] emission lines were well fitted using a single Gaussian function in 23 galaxies, while 22 objects presented a wing component and required a double-Gaussian decomposition. By computing the radial velocity difference between the wing and core centroids (i.e. $Δ$v), we found 18 galaxies exhibiting blueshifted wings, 2 objects presenting red wings and 2 galaxies showing symmetric wings ($Δ$v$= 0$). Moreover, $Δ$v was slightly correlated with the black hole mass. In addition, we computed the radial velocity difference of the blue-side full extension of the wing relative to the centroid of the core component through the \emph{blue emission} parameter, which revealed a correlation with black hole mass, in agreement with previous results reported for narrow line galaxies. Finally, in our sample, similar black hole mass distributions were observed in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blueshifted asymmetric [OIII] profiles.

Spectral nuclear properties of NLS1 galaxies

It is not yet well known whether narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies follow the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation found for normal galaxies. Emission lines, such as [SII] or [OIII]$λ$5007, have been used as a surrogate of the stellar velocity dispersion and various results have been obtained. On the other hand, some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have shown Balmer emission with an additional intermediate component (IC) besides the well-known narrow and broad lines. In order to re-examine the location of NLS1 in the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation, we test some emission lines, such as the narrow component (NC) of H$α$ and the forbidden [NII]$λλ$6548,6584 and [SII]$λλ$6716,6731 lines, as replacements for $σ_{\star}$. On the other hand, we study the properties of the IC of H$α$ found in 14 galaxies of the sample to find a link between this component, the central engine, and the remaining lines. We also compare the emission among the broad component (BC) of H$α$ and those emitted at the narrow line region (NLR). We have obtained and studied medium-resolution spectra (170 km s$^{-1}$ FWHM at H$α$) of 36 NLS1 galaxies in the optical range $\sim$5800 - 6800Å. We found that, in general, most of the galaxies lie below the $M_{BH} - σ_{\star}$ relation when the NC of H$α$, [SII], and [NII] lines are used as a surrogate of $σ_{\star}$. Besides this, we found that 13 galaxies show an IC, most of which are in the velocity range $\sim$ 700 $-$ 1500 km s$^{- 1}$. This is same range as in AGN types and is well correlated with the FWHM of BC and, therefore, with the BH mass. On the other hand, we found that there is a correlation between the luminosity of the BC of H$α$ and NC, IC, [NII]$λ$6584, and [SII] lines.
