The Ricci flow of asymptotically hyperbolic mass and applications

We consider the evolution of the asymptotically hyperbolic mass under the curvature-normalized Ricci flow of asymptotically hyperbolic, conformally compactifiable manifolds. In contrast to asymptotically flat manifolds, for which ADM mass is constant during Ricci flow, we show that the mass of an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold of dimension n>2 decays smoothly to zero exponentially in the flow time. From this, we obtain a no-breathers theorem and a Ricci flow based, modified proof of the scalar curvature rigidity of zero-mass asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We argue that the nonconstant time evolution of the asymptotically hyperbolic mass is natural in light of a conjecture of Horowitz and Myers, and is a test of that conjecture. Finally, we use a simple parabolic scaling argument to produce a heuristic "derivation" of the constancy of ADM mass under asymptotically flat Ricci flow, starting from our decay formula for the asymptotically hyperbolic mass under the curvature-normalized flow.

On long-time existence for the flow of static metrics with rotational symmetry

B List has proposed a geometric flow whose fixed points correspond to solutions of the static Einstein equations of general relativity. This flow is now known to be a certain Hamilton-DeTurck flow (the pullback of a Ricci flow by an evolving diffeomorphism) on RxM^n. We study the SO(n) rotationally symmetric case of List's flow under conditions of asymptotic flatness. We are led to this problem from considerations related to Bartnik's quasi-local mass definition and, as well, as a special case of the coupled Ricci-harmonic map flow. The problem also occurs as a Ricci flow with broken SO(n+1) symmetry, and has arisen in a numerical study of Ricci flow for black hole thermodynamics. When the initial data admits no minimal hypersphere, we find the flow is immortal when a single regularity condition holds for the scalar field of List's flow at the origin. This regularity condition can be shown to hold at least for n=2. Otherwise, near a singularity, the flow will admit rescalings which converge to an SO(n)-symmetric ancient Ricci flow on R^n.

Asymptotically Flat Ricci Flows

We study Ricci flows on $R^n$, $n\ge 3$, that evolve from asymptotically flat initial data. Under mild conditions on the initial data, we show that the flow exists and remains asymptotically flat for an interval of time. The mass is constant in time along the flow. We then specialize to the case of rotationally symmetric, asymptotically flat initial data containing no embedded minimal hyperspheres. We show that in this case the flow is immortal, remains asymptotically flat, never develops a minimal hypersphere, and converges to flat Euclidean space as the time diverges to infinity. We discuss the behaviour of quasi-local mass under the flow, and relate this to a conjecture in string theory.

The Cosmic Censor Forbids Naked Topology

For any asymptotically flat spacetime with a suitable causal structure obeying (a weak form of) Penrose's cosmic censorship conjecture and satisfying conditions guaranteeing focusing of complete null geodesics, we prove that active topological censorship holds. We do not assume global hyperbolicity, and therefore make no use of Cauchy surfaces and their topology. Instead, we replace this with two underlying assumptions concerning the causal structure: that no compact set can signal to arbitrarily small neighbourhoods of spatial infinity (``$i^0$-avoidance''), and that no future incomplete null geodesic is visible from future null infinity. We show that these and the focusing condition together imply that the domain of outer communications is simply connected. Furthermore, we prove lemmas which have as a consequence that if a future incomplete null geodesic were visible from infinity, then given our $i^0$-avoidance assumption, it would also be visible from points of spacetime that can communicate with infinity, and so would signify a true naked singularity.

The Positivity of Energy for Asymptotically Anti-de Sitter Spacetimes

We use the formulation of asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions given by Ashtekar and Magnon to obtain a coordinate expression for the general asymptotically AdeS metric in a neighbourhood of infinity. From this, we are able to compute the time delay of null curves propagating near infinity. If the gravitational mass is negative, so will be the time delay (relative to null geodesics at infinity) for certain null geodesics in the spacetime. Following closely an argument given by Penrose, Sorkin, and Woolgar, who treated the asymptotically flat case, we are then able to argue that a negative time delay is inconsistent with non-negative matter-energies in spacetimes having good causal properties. We thereby obtain a new positive mass theorem for these spacetimes. The theorem may be applied even when the matter flux near the boundary-at-infinity falls off so slowly that the mass changes, provided the theorem is applied in a time-averaged sense. The theorem also applies in certain spacetimes having local matter-energy that is sometimes negative, as can be the case in semi-classical gravity.
