One- and two-axis squeezing via laser coupling in an atomic Fermi-Hubbard model

We study a production of spin-squeezed states with ultra-cold atomic fermions described by the Fermi-Hubbard model in the Mott insulating phase. We show activation of two twisting mechanisms by a position-dependent laser coupling between internal degrees of freedom of atoms. A single laser coupling simulates the one-axis twisting model with the orientation of the twisting axis determined by the coupling phase. Adding a second laser beam with a properly chosen phase paves the way to simulate the two-axis counter-twisting model, enabling to approach the Heisenberg-limited level of squeezing.

Producing and storing spin-squeezed states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We study the dynamical generation and storage of spin squeezed states, as well as more entangled states up to macroscopic superpositions, in a system composed of a few ultra-cold atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The system, initially in the superfluid phase with each atom in a superposition of two internal states, is first dynamically entangled by atom-atom interactions then adiabatically brought to the Mott-insulator phase with one atom per site where the quantum correlations are stored. Exact numerical diagonalization allows us to explore the structure of the stored states by looking at various correlation functions, on site and between different sites, both at zero temperature and at finite temperature, as it could be done in an experiment with a quantum-gas microscope.

Entanglement storage by classical fixed points in the two-axis countertwisting model

We analyze a scheme for storage of entanglement quantified by the quantum Fisher information in the two-axis countertwisting model. A characteristic feature of the two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian is the existence of the four stable center and two unstable saddle fixed points in the mean-field phase portrait. The entangled state is generated dynamically from an initial spin coherent state located around an unstable saddle fixed point. At an optimal moment of time the state is shifted to a position around stable center fixed points by a single rotation, where its dynamics and properties are approximately frozen. We also discuss evolution with noise. In some cases the effect of noise turns out to be relatively weak, which is explained by parity conservation.

Spontaneous solitons in the thermal equilibrium of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose gas

Solitons, or non-destructible local disturbances, are important features of many one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear wave phenomena, from water waves in narrow canals to light pulses in optical fibers. In ultra-cold gases, they have long been sought, and were first observed to be generated by phase-imprinting. More recently, their spontaneous formation in 1D gases was predicted as a result of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, rapid evaporative cooling, and dynamical processes after a quantum quench. Here we show that they actually occur generically in the thermal equilibrium state of a weakly-interacting elongated Bose gas, without the need for external forcing or perturbations. This reveals a major new quality to the experimentally widespread quasicondensate state. It can be understood via thermal occupation of the famous and somewhat elusive Type II excitations in the Lieb-Liniger model of a uniform 1D gas.

Solitons as the early stage of quasicondensate formation during evaporative cooling

We calculate the evaporative cooling dynamics of trapped one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates for parameters leading to a range of condensates and quasicondensates in the final equilibrium state. We confirm that solitons are created during the evaporation process, but always eventually dissipate during thermalisation. The distance between solitons at the end of the evaporation ramp matches the coherence length in the final thermal state. Calculations were made using the classical fields method. They bridge the gap between the phase defect picture of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and the long-wavelength phase fluctuations in the thermal state.
