Green Bank Telescope: Overview and analysis of metrology systems and pointing performance

With a 100mx110m off-axis paraboloid dish, the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is the largest fully steerable radio telescope on Earth. A major challenge facing large ground-based radio telescopes is achieving sufficient pointing accuracy for observing at high frequencies, up to 116 GHz in the case of the GBT. Accurate pointing requires the ability to blindly acquire source locations and perform ad hoc corrections determined by observing nearby calibrator sources in order to obtain a starting position accurate to within a small margin of error of the target's location. The required pointing accuracy is dependent upon the half-power beamwidth, and for the higher-frequency end of GBT observing, this means that pointing must be accurate to within a few arcseconds RMS. The GBT's off-axis design is advantageous in that it eliminates blockage of the dish and reduces sidelobe interference, and there is no evidence that the resulting asymmetric structure adversely affects pointing accuracy. However, factors such as gravitational flexure, thermal deformation, azimuth track tilt and irregularity, and small misalignments and offset errors within the telescope's structure cause pointing inaccuracies. A pointing model was developed for the GBT to correct for these effects. The model utilizes standard geometrical corrections along with metrology data from the GBT's structural temperature sensors and data from measurements of the track levels. In this paper we provide a summary of the GBT's pointing model and associated corrections, as well as a discussion of relevant metrology systems and an analysis of its current nighttime pointing accuracy.

Angular analysis of B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-

We present a measurement of angular observables, P4′P_4', P5′P_5', P6′P_6', P8′P_8', in the decay B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-, where ℓ+ℓ−\ell^+\ell^- is either e+e−e^+e^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^-. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb−1711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1} containing 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar B pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider KEKB. Four angular observables, P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, q2q^2. We compare our results for P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' with Standard Model predictions including the q2q^2 region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called P5′P_5' anomaly.

Evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη

We report a search for B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 698 fb−1698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1} containing 753×106753 \times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0→ηη)=(7.6−2.3−1.6+2.7+1.4)×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to ηη) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7} at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0} \to ηη.

Measurement of CPCP asymmetry in the D0→KS0KS0D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S using 921~fb−1^{-1} data collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The observed asymmetry is ACP(D0→KS0KS0)=(−0.02±1.53±0.17)%, A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of Michel Parameters (ηˉ\barη, ξκξκ) in the radiative leptonic decay of tau at Belle

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters ηˉ\barη and ξκξκ in the radiative leptonic decay of the ττ lepton using 703 fb−1\mathrm{b}^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+e^- collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of e+e−→τ+τ−→(π+π0νˉ)(l−ννˉγ)e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν)(l^-ν\barνγ) (l=e(l=e or μ)μ). The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are ηˉ=−2.0±1.5±0.8\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8 and ξκ=0.6±0.4±0.2ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the ττ lepton polarization in the decay Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ{\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\bar ν_τ}

We report the first measurement of the ττ lepton polarization in the decay Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ{\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ} as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions R(D∗)=B(Bˉ→D∗τ−νˉτ)/B(Bˉ→D∗ℓ−νˉℓ)R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\barν_{\ell}}), where ℓ−\ell^- denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays τ−→π−νττ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ and τ−→ρ−νττ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ. We use the full data sample of 772×106772 \times 10^6 BBˉB{\bar B} pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, R(D∗)=0.276±0.034(stat.)−0.026+0.029(syst.)R(D^*) = 0.276 \pm 0.034{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.029} _{-0.026}{\rm (syst.)} and Pτ=−0.44±0.47(stat.)−0.17+0.20(syst.)P_τ = -0.44 \pm 0.47 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.20} _{-0.17} {\rm (syst.)}, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model within 0.60.6 standard deviation.

We report a measurement of ratio R(D∗)=B(Bˉ0→D∗+τ−νˉτ)/B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ){\cal R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell}), where ℓ\ell denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider. We select a sample of B0Bˉ0B^0 \bar{B}^0 pairs by reconstructing both BB mesons in semileptonic decays to D∗∓ℓ±D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}. We measure R(D∗)=0.302±0.030(stat)±0.011(syst){\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}, which is within 1.6σ1.6 σ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where σσ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Study of Two-Body e+e−→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} Production in the Energy Range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV

We report results on the studies of the e+e−→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} processes. The results are based on a 121.4121.4 fb−1^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the Υ(10860)Υ(10860) peak and 16.416.4 fb−1^{-1} of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear e+e−→Υ(10860)→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\toΥ(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} signal, with no statistically significant signal of e+e−→Υ(11020)→Bs(∗)Bˉs(∗)e^+e^-\to Υ(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}. The relative production ratio of Bs∗Bˉs∗B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*, BsBˉs∗B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}, and BsBˉsB_s\bar{B}_s final states at s=10.866\sqrt{s}=10.866 GeV is measured to be 7:7: 0.856±0.106(stat.)±0.053(syst.):0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.): 0.645±0.094(stat.)−0.033+0.030(syst.)0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.). Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process e+e−→qqˉe^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function G1⊥G_1^\perp. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near s≈10.58\sqrt{s}\approx10.58 GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio rSr_S of B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0} decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using D→KS0π+π−D\to K_S^0π^+π^- decays. Using the full data sample of 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is rS<0.87r_S < 0.87 at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of rSr_S with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of rSr_S indicates the sensitivity of the decay to ϕ3ϕ_3 because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to 1/rS1/r_S. The rSr_S result is obtained from observables (x±x_\pm, y±y_\pm) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where x±=rScos⁡(δS±ϕ3)x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3), y±=rSsin⁡(δS±ϕ3)y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3) and ϕ3(δS)ϕ_3 (δ_S) are the weak (strong) phase difference between B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on cic_i and sis_i parameters measured by CLEO.

Measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays with the semileptonic tagging method and the full Belle data sample

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays using a data sample of 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying BB meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B+→τ+ντ)=[1.25±0.28(stat.)±0.27(syst.)]×10−4{\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Measurement of the Wrong-Sign Decay D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi-

A measurement of the rate for the "wrong-sign" decay D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi- relative to that for the "right-sign" decay D0 -> K- pi+ pi+ pi- is presented. Using 791 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector, we obtain a branching fraction ratio of R_WS = [0.324 +- 0.008 (stat) +- 0.007 (sys)]%. Multiplying this ratio by the world average value for the branching fraction B(D0 -> K- pi+ pi+ pi-) gives a branching fraction B(D0 -> K+ pi- pi+ pi-) = (2.61 +- 0.06 +0.09 -0.08) x 10-4.

Belle II Technical Design Report

The Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider has collected almost 1 billion Y(4S) events in its decade of operation. Super-KEKB, an upgrade of KEKB is under construction, to increase the luminosity by two orders of magnitude during a three-year shutdown, with an ultimate goal of 8E35 /cm^2 /s luminosity. To exploit the increased luminosity, an upgrade of the Belle detector has been proposed. A new international collaboration Belle-II, is being formed. The Technical Design Report presents physics motivation, basic methods of the accelerator upgrade, as well as key improvements of the detector.
