Metastable spin-phase diagrams in antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates under external magnetic fields exhibit well-characterized spin domains of its ground state due to spin-dependent interactions. At low temperatures, collision-induced spin-mixing instabilities may promote the condensate to dwell into metastable states occurring near the phase boundaries. In this work, we study theoretically the metastable spin-phase diagram of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate at zero and finite temperatures. The approach makes use of Hartree-Fock theory and exploits the symmetry of the Hamiltonian and of the order parameters yielding a closed system of transcendental equations for the free energy, fully avoiding the use of selfconsistency. Our results are consistent with recent experiments and allow us to explain qualitatively the different types of observed quench dynamics. In addition, we found that similar phenomena should occur in antiferromagnetic spinor condensates with a sudden change in the temperature. It is shown also that the increase of temperature induces a traceable shift of the Ferromagnetic-Polar transition boundary, behavior previously not noticed by selfconsistent mean-field calculations.

Majorana representation for mixed states

We generalize the Majorana stellar representation of spin-$s$ pure states to mixed states, and in general to any hermitian operator, defining a bijective correspondence between three spaces: the spin density-matrices, a projective space of homogeneous polynomials of four variables, and a set of equivalence classes of points (constellations) on spheres of different radii. The representation behaves well under rotations by construction, and also under partial traces where the reduced density matrices inherit their constellation classes from the original state $ρ$. We express several concepts and operations related to density matrices in terms of the corresponding polynomials, such as the anticoherence criterion and the tensor representation of spin-$s$ states described in [1].

Stellar Representation of Grassmannians

Pure quantum spin-$s$ states can be represented by $2s$ points on the sphere, as shown by Majorana in 1932 --- the description has proven particularly useful in the study of rotational symmetries of the states, and a host of other properties, as the points rotate rigidly on the sphere when the state undergoes an $SU(2)$ transformation in Hilbert space. At the same time, the Wilzcek-Zee effect, which involves the cyclic evolution of a degenerate $k$-dimensional linear subspace of the Hilbert space, and the associated holonomy dictated by Schroedinger's equation, have been proposed as a fault-tolerant mechanism for the implementation of logical gates, with applications in quantum computing. We show, in this paper, how to characterize such subspaces by Majorana-like sets of points on the sphere, that also rotate rigidly under $SU(2)$ transformations --- the construction is actually valid for arbitrary totally antisymmetric $k$-partite qudit states.
