Continuous to intermittent flows in growing granular heaps

If a granular material is poured from above on a horizontal surface between two parallel, vertical plates, a sand heap grows in time. For small piles, the grains flow smoothly downhill, but after a critical pile size $X_c$, the flow becomes intermittent: sudden avalanches slide downhill from the apex to the base, followed by an "uphill front" that slowly climbs up, until a new downhill avalanche interrupts the process. By means of experiments controlling the distance between the apex of the sandpile and the container feeding it from above, we show that $X_c$ grows linearly with the input flux, but scales as the square root of the feeding height. We explain these facts based on a phenomenological model based on the experimental observation that the flowing granular phase forms a "wedge" on top of the static one, differently from the case of stationary heaps. Moreover, we demonstrate that our controlled experiments allow to predict the value of $X_c$ for the common situation in which the feeding height decreases as the pile increases in size.

Realistic micromagnetic description of all-optical ultrafast switching processes in ferrimagnetic alloys

Both helicity-independent and helicity-dependent all-optical switching processes driven by single ultrashort laser pulse have been experimentally demonstrated in ferrimagnetic alloys as GdFeCo. Although the switching has been previously reproduced by atomistic simulations, the lack of a robust micromagnetic framework for ferrimagnets limits the predictions to small nano-systems, whereas the experiments are usually performed with lasers and samples of tens of micrometers. Here we develop a micromagnetic model based on the extended Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation, which is firstly validated by directly reproducing atomistic results for small samples and uniform laser heating. After that, the model is used to study ultrafast single shot all-optical switching in ferrimagnetic alloys under realistic conditions. We find that the helicity-independent switching under a linearly polarized laser pulse is a pure thermal phenomenon, in which the size of inverted area directly correlates with the maximum electron temperature in the sample. On the other hand, the analysis of the helicity-dependent processes under circular polarized pulses in ferrimagnetic alloys with different composition indicates qualitative differences between the results predicted by the magnetic circular dichroism and the ones from inverse Faraday effect. Based on these predictions, we propose experiments that would allow to resolve the controversy over the physical phenomenon that underlies these helicity-dependent all optical processes.

Prediction of the Al-rich part of the Al-Cu phase diagram using cluster expansion and statistical mechanics

The thermodynamic properties of α-Al and other phases (GP zones, θ'', θ' and θ) in the Al-rich part of the Al-Cu system have been obtained by means of the cluster expansion formalism in combination with statistical mechanics. This information was used to build the Al-rich part of the Al-Cu phase-diagram taking into account vibrational entropic contributions for θ', as those of the other phases were negligible. The simulation predictions of the phase boundaries between α-Al and either θ'', θ' or θ phases as a function of temperature are in good agreement with experimental data and extend the phase boundaries to a wider temperature range. The DFT calculations reveal the presence of a number of metastable Guinier-Preston-zone type configurations that may coexist with α-Al and θ'' at low temperatures. They also demonstrate that θ' is the stable phase below 550K but it is replaced by θ above this temperature due to the vibrational entropic contribution to the Gibbs energy of θ'. This work shows how the combination of cluster expansion and statistical mechanics can be used to expand our knowledge of the phase diagram of metallic alloys and to provide Gibbs free energies of different phases that can be used as input in mesoscale simulations of precipitation.

Intruder penetration into granular matter studied by Lock-in Accelerometry

Understanding the penetration dynamics of intruders in granular beds is relevant not only for fundamental physics, but also for geophysical processes and construction on sediments or granular soils in areas potentially affected by earthquakes. In this work, we use Lock-in accelerometry to study the penetration of intruders into quasi-2D granular matter fluidized by lateral shaking. We observed that there are two well-defined stages in the penetration dynamics as the intruder sinks into the granular material.

On the exact discrete Lagrangian function for variational integrators: theory and applications

In this paper, we will give a rigorous construction of the exact discrete Lagrangian formulation associated to a continuous Lagrangian problem. Moreover, we work in the setting of Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids which is enough general to simultaneously cover several cases of interest in discrete and continuous descriptions as, for instance, Euler-Lagrange equations, Euler-Poincaré equations, Lagrange-Poincaré equations... The construction of an exact discrete Lagrangian is of considerable interest for the analysis of the error between an exact trajectory and the discrete trajectory derived by a variational integrator.

Asymmetric driven dynamics of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic strips with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

The dynamics of domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic strips with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is studied from both numerical and analytical micromagnetics. The influence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction associated to a bi-layer strip arrangement has been considered, giving rise to the formation of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls. Such walls possess under equilibrium conditions an inner magnetization structure defined by a certain orientation angle that make them to be considered as intermediate configurations between Bloch and Néel walls. Two different dynamics are considered, a field-driven and a current-driven dynamics, in particular, the one promoted by the spin torque due to the Spin-Hall effect. Results show an inherent asymmetry associated with the rotation of the domain wall magnetization orientation before reaching the stationary regime, characterized by a constant terminal speed. For a certain initial DW magnetization orientation at rest, the rotation determines whether the reorientation of the DW magnetization prior to reach stationary motion is smooth or abrupt. This asymmetry affects the DW motion that can even reverse for a short period of time. Additionally, it is found that the terminal speed in the case of the current-driven dynamics may depend on either the initial DW magnetization orientation at rest or the sign of the longitudinally injected current.

Some applications of quasi-velocities in optimal control

In this paper we study optimal control problems for nonholonomic systems defined on Lie algebroids by using quasi-velocities. We consider both kinematic, i.e. systems whose cost functional depends only on position and velocities, and dynamic optimal control problems, i.e. systems whose cost functional depends also on accelerations. The formulation of the problem directly at the level of Lie algebroids turns out to be the correct framework to explain in detail similar results appeared recently (Maruskin and Bloch, 2007). We also provide several examples to illustrate our construction.

Discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie groupoids

The purpose of this paper is to describe geometrically discrete Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics on Lie groupoids. From a variational principle we derive the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations and we introduce a symplectic 2-section, which is preserved by the Lagrange evolution operator. In terms of the discrete Legendre transformations we define the Hamiltonian evolution operator which is a symplectic map with respect to the canonical symplectic 2-section on the prolongation of the dual of the Lie algebroid of the given groupoid. The equations we get include as particular cases the classical discrete Euler-Lagrange equations, the discrete Euler-Poincaré and discrete Lagrange-Poincaré equations. Our results can be important for the construction of geometric integrators for continuous Lagrangian systems.
