FLAG Review 2019

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to π$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio $f_K/f_π$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ and $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for $D$- and $B$-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. Finally, in this review we have added a new section reviewing results for nucleon matrix elements of the axial, scalar and tensor bilinears, both isovector and flavor diagonal.

Phenomenology of semileptonic B-meson decays with form factors from lattice QCD

We study the exclusive semileptonic $B$-meson decays $B\to K(π)\ell^+\ell^-$, $B\to K(π)ν\barν$, and $B\toπτν$, computing observables in the Standard model using the recent lattice-QCD results for the underlying form factors from the Fermilab Lattice and MILC Collaborations. These processes provide theoretically clean windows into physics beyond the Standard Model because the hadronic uncertainties are now under good control for suitably binned observables. For example, the resulting partially integrated branching fractions for $B\toπμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to Kμ^+μ^-$ outside the charmonium resonance region are 1-2$σ$ higher than the LHCb Collaboration's recent measurements, where the theoretical and experimental errors are commensurate. The combined tension is 1.7$σ$. Combining the Standard-Model rates with LHCb's measurements yields values for the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{td}|=7.45{(69)}\times10^{-3}$, $|V_{ts}|=35.7(1.5)\times10^{-3}$, and $|V_{td}/V_{ts}|=0.201{(20)}$, which are compatible with the values obtained from neutral $B_{(s)}$-meson oscillations and have competitive uncertainties. Alternatively, taking the CKM matrix elements from unitarity, we constrain new-physics contributions at the electroweak scale. The constraints on the Wilson coefficients ${\rm Re}(C_9)$ and ${\rm Re}(C_{10})$ from $B\toπμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to Kμ^+μ^-$ are competitive with those from $B\to K^* μ^+μ^-$, and display a 2.0$σ$ tension with the Standard Model. Our predictions for $B\to K(π)ν\barν$ and $B\toπτν$ are close to the current experimental limits.

Review of lattice results concerning low-energy particle physics

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, D- and B-meson physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f+(0), arising in the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay constant ratio fK/fpi and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements Vus and Vud. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)LxSU(2)R and SU(3)LxSU(3)R Chiral Perturbation Theory. We review the determination of the BK parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four B parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. The latter quantities are an addition compared to the previous review. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for mc and mb (also new compared to the previous review), as well as those for D- and B-meson decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. Finally, we review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s.

$B\toπ\ell\ell$ form factors for new-physics searches from lattice QCD

The rare decay $B\toπ\ell^+\ell^-$ arises from $b\to d$ flavor-changing neutral currents and could be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we present the first $ab$-$initio$ QCD calculation of the $B\toπ$ tensor form factor $f_T$. Together with the vector and scalar form factors $f_+$ and $f_0$ from our companion work [J. A. Bailey $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. D 92, 014024 (2015)], these parameterize the hadronic contribution to $B\toπ$ semileptonic decays in any extension of the Standard Model. We obtain the total branching ratio ${\text{BR}}(B^+\toπ^+μ^+μ^-)=20.4(2.1)\times10^{-9}$ in the Standard Model, which is the most precise theoretical determination to date, and agrees with the recent measurement from the LHCb experiment [R. Aaij $et~al.$, JHEP 1212, 125 (2012)]. Note added: after this paper was submitted for publication, LHCb announced a new measurement of the differential decay rate for this process [T. Tekampe, talk at DPF 2015], which we now compare to the shape and normalization of the Standard-Model prediction.

Trilepton Signatures of Light Charged and CP-odd Higgs Bosons in Top Quark Decays

In singlet extensions of the two Higgs doublet model, a light CP-odd Higgs boson (A) can significantly modify decay modes of the charged Higgs, without necessarily affecting decay modes of the standard model-like Higgs boson. These effects can be sizable even if the doublet component of the light CP-odd Higgs is small, so that constraints from Upsilon decays and direct CP-odd Higgs production do not apply. We study a scenario in which the charged Higgs is produced in top quark decays, t -> H+ b, with dominant H+ -> W A. We focus on the CP-odd Higgs mass range below the bb threshold. We summarize all current experimental constraints and find that, as a result of H+ -> W A dominance, this scenario is not constrained in a large region of tan(beta), mH+, and CP-odd Higgs doublet component. We discuss search strategies based on A -> tau tau, with both taus decaying leptonically, and on the subleading decay mode A -> mu mu. We show that a search for t -> H+ b, H+ -> W A, A -> mu mu in 20 fb^-1 of 8 TeV LHC data can constrain most of the currently allowed parameter space. Existing trilepton searches are not sensitive to this signal due to the adopted isolation criteria.

Electromagnetic Logarithms in B -> X_s l+ l-

The B -> X_s l+ l- decay rate is known at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. It is proportional to alpha_em (mu)^2 and has a +- 4% scale uncertainty before including the O(alpha_em log(M_W^2/m_b^2)) electromagnetic corrections. We evaluate these corrections and confirm the earlier findings of Bobeth et al. >. Furthermore, we complete the calculation of logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic effects by including also QED corrections to the matrix elements of four-fermion operators. Such corrections contain a collinear logarithm log(m_b^2/m_l^2) that survives integration over the low dilepton invariant mass region 1 GeV^2 < q^2 < 6 GeV^2 and enhances the integrated decay rate in this domain. For the low-q^2 integrated branching ratio in the muonic case, we find B (B -> X_s mu^+mu^-) = (1.59 +- 0.11) 10^(-6), where the error includes the parametric and perturbative uncertainties only. For B (B -> X_s e^+e^-), in the current BaBar and Belle setups, the logarithm of the lepton mass gets replaced by angular cut parameters and the integrated branching ratio for the electrons is expected to be close to that for the muons.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Possible evidence for the breakdown of the CKM-paradigm of CP-violation

Using primarily experimental inputs for S(B -> psi Ks), Delta M_Bs, Delta M_Bd, BR(B -> tau nu) and epsilon_K along with necessary inputs from the lattice, we find that the measured value of sin(2 beta) is smaller than expectations of the Standard Model by as much as 3.3 sigma, and also that the measured value of the BR(B -> tau nu) seems to be less than the predicted value by about 2.8 sigma. However, through a critical study we show that most likely the dominant source of these deviations is in B_d(s) mixings and in sin(2 beta) and less so in B -> tau nu, and also that the bulk of the problem persists even if input from epsilon_K is not used. The fact that kaon mixing and epsilon_K are not the dominant source of the deviation from the Standard Model has the very important consequence that model independent considerations imply that the scale of the relevant new CP-violating physics is below O(2 TeV), thus suggesting that direct signals of the new particle(s) may well be accessible in collider experiments at the LHC and perhaps even at the Tevatron.

Unitarity Triangle Without Semileptonic Decays

Use of semi-leptonic decays has become standard in constraining the Unitarity Triangle. Bearing in mind that precise calculations of these are very challenging, we propose an entirely new approach. In particular the |Vcb| + epsilon_K constraint, which depends extremely sensitively on Vcb in the traditional method, is replaced by the interplay between epsilon_K, BR(B ->tau nu) and Delta M_Bs. It is found that even in this method tensions with the Standard Model persist at the ~1.8 sigma level. Furthermore, improvements on the B -> tau nu branching ratio and on the lattice determination of f_Bs Bs^(1/2) can increase the effectiveness of this method significantly.

Huge right-handed current effects in B->K*(K pi)l+l- in supersymmetry

Transverse asymmetries in the decay B->K*(K pi)l+l- are an extremely sensitive probe of right-handed flavour-changing neutral currents. We show how to include the contribution from the chiral partner of the electromagnetic operator on the transverse asymmetries at NLO in QCD factorization. We then consider supersymmetric models with non-minimal flavour violation in the down-squark sector. We include all the relevant experimental constraints and present a numerical formula for B->Xs gamma that takes into account the most recent NNLO calculations. We show that the flavour-changing parameters of these models are poorly constrained by present data and allow for large effects on the transverse asymmetries that we consider.

An Analysis of the Time-Dependent CP Asymmetry in $B \to ππ$ Decays in the Standard Model

Measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in the decay $B^0_d (t) \to π^+ π^-$ and its charge conjugate by the BELLE and BABAR collaborations currently yield $C_{ππ}^{+-} = -0.46 \pm 0.13$ and $S_{ππ}^{+-} = -0.74 \pm 0.16$, characterizing the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetries, respectively. We study the implication of these measurements on the CKM phenomenology taking into account the available information in the quark mixing sector. Our analysis leads to the results that the ratio $|P_c/T_c|$ involving the QCD-penguin and tree amplitudes and the related strong phase difference $δ_c = δ_c^P - δ_c^T$ in the $B^0_d/\bar{B}_d^0 \to π^+ π^-$ decays are quite substantial. Using the isospin symmetry to constrain $|P_c/T_c|$ and $\cos (2θ)$, where $2 θ$ parameterizes the penguin-induced contribution, we present a fit of the current data including the measurements of $S_{ππ}^{+-}$ and $C_{ππ}^{+-}$. Our best-fits yield: $α= 92^\circ$, $β= 24^\circ$, $γ= 64^\circ$, $|P_c/T_c| = 0.77$, and $δ_c = -43^\circ$. At 68% C.L., the ranges are: $81^\circ \leq α\leq 103^\circ$, $21.9^\circ \leq β\leq 25.5^\circ$, $54^\circ \leq γ\leq 75^\circ$, $0.43 \leq |P_c/T_c| \leq 1.35$ and $-64^\circ \leq δ_c \leq -29^\circ$. Currently {\it en vogue} dynamical approaches to estimate the hadronic matrix elements in $B \to ππ$ decays do not provide a good fit of the current data.

Reducing the Error on alpha in B-> pi pi, rho rho, rho pi

Theoretical errors in the extraction of alpha from B -> pi^+ pi^-, rho^+ rho^-, rho pi decays are usually given in terms of upper bounds on alpha_eff-alpha obtained from isospin or from SU(3) relations, where alpha_eff is measured through CP asymmetries. We show that mild assumptions about magnitudes and strong phases of penguin and tree amplitudes (|P/T| < 1 and |delta| < pi/2) in B -> pi pi and B -> rho rho, imply alpha_eff > alpha, thus reducing by a factor two the error in alpha. Similarly, the assumptions |p_+-/t_+-| < 1, |δ_-| < pi/2 <|δ_+| in B -> rho pi lead to a cancellation between two terms in alpha_eff-alpha. Current data support these conditions.

Improved Model-Independent Analysis of Semileptonic and Radiative Rare B Decays

We update the branching ratios for the inclusive decays $B\to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ and the exclusive decays $B\to (K,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, with $\ell=e, \m$, in the standard model by including the explicit $O(\a_s)$ and $Λ_{\hbox{\tiny QCD}} / m_b$ corrections. This framework is used in conjunction with the current measurements of the branching ratios for $B\to X_s \g$ and $B\to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays and upper limits on the branching ratios for the decays $B\to (K^*,X_s) \ell^+ \ell^-$ to work out bounds on the Wilson coefficients $C_7$, $C_8$, $C_9$ and $C_{10}$ appearing in the effective Hamiltonian formalism. The resulting bounds are found to be consistent with the predictions of the standard model and some variants of supersymmetric theories. We illustrate the constraints on supersymmetric parameters that the current data on rare B decays implies in the context of minimal flavor violating model and in more general scenarios admitting additional flavor changing mechanisms. Precise measurements of the dilepton invariant mass distributions in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*,K) \ell^+ \ell^-$, in particular in the lower dilepton mass region, and the forward-backward asymmetry in the decays $B \to (X_s,K^*) \ell^+ \ell^-$, will greatly help in discriminating among the SM and various supersymmetric theories.

Complex flavour couplings in supersymmetry and unexpected CP-violation in the decay B -> phi K

Complex flavour couplings (off-diagonal mass terms) in the squark sector of supersymmetric theories may drastically alter both the rate and the CP-violating asymmetry of certain B-meson decays. We consider the effects of couplings that induce b -> s transitions and lead to final state with strangeness one. We investigate the bounds that must be satisfied by the new terms and explore the possible implications on direct and mixing induced asymmetries in the charged and neutral B -> J/Psi K and B -> phi K decays.

Extended Minimal Flavour Violating MSSM and Implications for B Physics

The recently reported measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K) by the BABAR and BELLE collaborations are in good agreement with the standard model (SM) prediction, resulting from the unitarity of the CKM matrix. The so-called minimal flavour violating (MFV) supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, in which the CKM matrix remains the only flavour changing structure, predict a(psi K) similar to the one in the SM. With the anticipated precision in a(psi K) and other CP asymmetries at the B factories and hadron colliders, one hopes to pin down any possible deviation from the SM. We discuss an extension of the MFV-supersymmetric models which comfortably accommodates the current measurements of the CP asymmetry a(psi K), but differs from the SM and the MFV-supersymmetric models due to an additional flavour changing structure beyond the CKM matrix. We suggest specific tests in forthcoming experiments in B physics. In addition to the CP-asymmetries in B-meson decays, such as a(psi K) and a(pi pi), and the mass difference Delta M_s in the Bs-bar(Bs) system, we emphasize measurements of the radiative transition b -> d gamma as sensitive probes of the postulated flavour changing structure. Interestingly, the CKM-unitarity analysis in the Extended-MFV model also allows solutions rho < 0, as opposed to the SM and the MFV models for which only rho > 0 solutions are now admissible, implying gamma > pi/2, where gamma=- arg (Vub). Such large values of gamma are hinted by the current measurements of the branching ratios for the decays B -> pi pi and B -> K pi.

General Flavor Blind MSSM and CP Violation

We study the implications on flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes in the context of supersymmetric theories without a new flavor structure (flavor blind supersymmetry). The low energy parameters are determined by the running of the soft breaking terms from the grand unified scale with SUSY phases consistent with the EDM constraints. We find that the CP asymmetry in b --> s gamma can reach large values potentially measurable at B factories, especially in the low BR(b --> s gamma) region. We perform a fit of the unitarity triangle including all the relevant observables. In this case, no sizeable deviations from the SM expectations are found. Finally we analyze the SUSY contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon pointing out its impact on the b --> s gamma CP asymmetry and on the SUSY spectrum including chargino and stop masses.

Looking for Novel CP-Violating Effects in B->K^*l^+l^-

The CP-violating asymmetries in the exclusive decay B->K^*l^+l^- (l=e,mu,tau) are predicted to be exceedingly small in the standard model (SM), thereby offering an opportunity to assess various new-physics scenarios. We derive quantitative predictions for various integrated observables in B->K^*mu^+mu^- decay in the presence of physics beyond the SM with additional CP phases and an extended operator basis. In particular, a model-independent analysis of CP asymmetries that require the presence of unitarity phases, in addition to CP violation, is performed. We find that in the low dimuon invariant mass region 2m_mu<M_{mu^+mu^-}<M_{J/psi}, the CP asymmetries are highly suppressed by small dynamical phases, assuming that new physics is unlikely to significantly alter the Wilson coefficients of the operators governing two-body hadronic B decays. Taking into account current experimental data on the measured b->s gamma rate and the upper limit on BR(B^0->K^{*0}mu^+mu^-), CP-violating effects of a few per cent are estimated, even in the presence of new physics with CP phases of O(1). By contrast, in the high dimuon invariant mass region M_{psi'}<M_{mu^+mu^-}<(M_B-M_{K^*}) significant CP-violating effects are possible. Given a branching ratio of 1.8 x 10^{-6}, the CP asymmetries can be quite substantial (\sim 20% or more), and thus may serve as a means of discovering physics transcending the SM.

B -> Xs l+ l- decays in supersymmetry

We study the semileptonic decays B -> Xs e+ e- and B -> Xs mu+ mu- in generic supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. SUSY effects are parameterized using the mass insertion approximation formalism and differences with the Constrained MSSM results are pointed out. Constraints on SUSY contributions coming from other processes (e.g. b -> s photon) are taken into account. Chargino and gluino contributions to photon and Z-mediated decays are computed and non-perturbative corrections are considered. We find that the integrated branching ratios and the asymmetries can be strongly modified. Moreover, the behavior of the differential Forward-Backward asymmetry remarkably changes with respect to the Standard Model expectation.
