A differential approach for bounding the index of graphs under perturbations

This paper presents bounds for the variation of the spectral radius λ(G)λ(G) of a graph GG after some perturbations or local vertex/edge modifications of GG. The perturbations considered here are the connection of a new vertex with, say, gg vertices of GG, the addition of a pendant edge (the previous case with g=1g=1) and the addition of an edge. The method proposed here is based on continuous perturbations and the study of their differential inequalities associated. Within rather economical information (namely, the degrees of the vertices involved in the perturbation), the best possible inequalities are obtained. In addition, the cases when equalities are attained are characterized. The asymptotic behavior of the bounds obtained is also discussed. For instance, if GG is a connected graph and GuG_u denotes the graph obtained from GG by adding a pendant edge at vertex uu with degree δuδ_u, then, λ(Gu)≤λ(G)+δuλ3(G)+o(1λ3(G)). λ(G_u)\le λ(G)+\frac{δ_u}{λ^3(G)}+\textrm{o}(\frac{1}{λ^3(G)}).

Moments in graphs

Let GG be a connected graph with vertex set VV and a {\em weight function} ρρ that assigns a nonnegative number to each of its vertices. Then, the {\em ρρ-moment} of GG at vertex uu is defined to be $M_G^ρ(u)=\sum_{v\in V} ρ(v)\dist (u,v) $, where $\dist(\cdot,\cdot)$ stands for the distance function. Adding up all these numbers, we obtain the {\em ρρ-moment of GG}: $$ M_G^ρ=\sum_{u\in V}M_G^ρ(u)=1/2\sum_{u,v\in V}\dist(u,v)[ρ(u)+ρ(v)]. $$ This parameter generalizes, or it is closely related to, some well-known graph invariants, such as the {\em Wiener index} W(G)W(G), when ρ(u)=1/2ρ(u)=1/2 for every u∈Vu\in V, and the {\em degree distance} D′(G)D'(G), obtained when ρ(u)=δ(u)ρ(u)=δ(u), the degree of vertex uu. In this paper we derive some exact formulas for computing the ρρ-moment of a graph obtained by a general operation called graft product, which can be seen as a generalization of the hierarchical product, in terms of the corresponding ρρ-moments of its factors. As a consequence, we provide a method for obtaining nonisomorphic graphs with the same ρρ-moment for every ρρ (and hence with equal mean distance, Wiener index, degree distance, etc.). In the case when the factors are trees and/or cycles, techniques from linear algebra allow us to give formulas for the degree distance of their product.

On the local spectra of the subconstituents of a vertex set and completely pseudo-regular codes

The local spectrum of a vertex set in a graph has been proven to be very useful to study some of its metric properties. It also has applications in the area of pseudo-distance-regularity around a set and can be used to obtain quasi-spectral characterizations of completely (pseudo-)regular codes. In this paper we study the relation between the local spectrum of a vertex set and the local spectrum of each of its subconstituents. Moreover, we obtain a new characterization for completely pseudo-regular codes, and consequently for completely regular codes, in terms of the relation between the local spectrum of an extremal set of vertices and the local spectrum of its antipodal set. We also present a new proof of the version of the Spectral Excess Theorem for extremal sets of vertices.
