The redshift and star formation mode of AzTEC2: a pair of massive galaxies at $z=4.63$

We combine observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) to assess the redshift and to study the star formation conditions in AzTEC2: one of the brightest sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the COSMOS field ($S_{\rm 1.1mm}=10.5\pm1.4$mJy). Our high-resolution observations confirm that AzTEC2 splits into two components (namely AzTEC2-A and AzTEC2-B) for which we detect [C$\,$II] and $^{12}$CO(5$\to$4) line emission, implying a redshift of $4.626\pm0.001$ ($4.633\pm0.001$) for AzTEC2-A (AzTEC2-B) and ruling out previous associations with a galaxy at $z\sim1$. We use the $^{12}$CO(5$\to$4) line emission and adopt typical SMG-like gas excitation conditions to estimate the molecular gas mass, which is $M_{\rm gas}(α_{\rm CO}/2.5)=2.1\pm0.4 \times10^{11}{\rm M}_\odot$ for AzTEC2-A, and a factor four lower for AzTEC2-B. With the infrared-derived star formation rate of AzTEC2-A ($1920\pm100 \,M_\odot{\rm \, yr}^{-1}$) and AzTEC2-B ($710\pm 35\,M_\odot{\rm \,yr}^{-1}$), they both will consume their current gas reservoir within $(30-200)\,$Myr. We find evidence of a rotation-dominated [C$\,$II] disk in AzTEC2-A, with a de-projected rotational velocity of $v_{\rm rot}(i=39^\circ)=660\pm130{\rm \,km\,s}^{-1}$, velocity dispersion $\lesssim100{\rm \,km\,s}^{-1}$, and dynamical mass of $M_{\rm dyn}(i=39^\circ)=2.6^{+1.2}_{-0.9}\times10^{11}\,M_\odot$. We propose that an elevated gas accretion rate from the cosmic web might be the main driver of the intense levels of star formation in AzTEC2-A, which might be further enhanced by gravitational torques induced by its minor companion (AzTEC2-B). These results strengthen the picture whereby the population of single-dish selected SMGs is rather heterogeneous, including a population of pairs of massive, highly-active galaxies in a pre-coalescence phase.

A$^3$COSMOS: The Dust Attenuation of Star-Forming Galaxies at $z=2.5-4.0$ from the COSMOS-ALMA Archive

We present an analysis of the dust attenuation of star forming galaxies at $z=2.5-4.0$ through the relationship between the UV spectral slope ($β$), stellar mass ($M_{\ast}$) and the infrared excess (IRX$=L_{\rm{IR}}/L_{\rm{UV}}$) based on far-infrared continuum observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA). Our study exploits the full ALMA archive over the COSMOS field processed by the A$^3$COSMOS team, which includes an unprecedented sample of $\sim1500$ galaxies at $z\sim3$ as primary or secondary targets in ALMA band 6 or 7 observations with a median continuum sensitivity of 126 $\rm{μJy/beam}$ (1$σ$). The detection rate is highly mass dependent, decreasing drastically below $\log (M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})=10.5$. The detected galaxies show that the IRX-$β$ relationship of massive ($\log M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} > 10$) main sequence galaxies at $z=2.5-4.0$ is consistent with that of local galaxies, while starbursts are generally offset by $\sim0.5\,{\rm dex}$ to larger IRX values. At the low mass end, we derive upper limits on the infrared luminosities through stacking of the ALMA data. The combined IRX-$M_{\ast}$ relation at $\rm{log\,(M_{\ast}/M_{\odot})>9}$ exhibits a significantly steeper slope than reported in previous studies at similar redshifts, implying little dust obscuration at $\log M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}<10$. However, our results are consistent with early measurements at $z\sim5.5$, indicating a potential redshift evolution between $z\sim2$ and $z\sim6$. Deeper observations targeting low mass galaxies will be required to confirm this finding.

The XMM spectral catalog of SDSS optically selected Seyfert 2 galaxies

We present an X-ray spectroscopic study of optically selected (SDSS) Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies. The goal is to study the obscuration of Sy2 galaxies beyond the local universe, using good quality X-ray spectra in combination with high S/N optical spectra for their robust classification. We analyzed all available XMM-Newton archival observations of narrow emission line galaxies that meet the above criteria in the redshift range 0.05<z<0.35. We initially selected narrow line AGN using the SDSS optical spectra and the BPT classification diagram. We further modeled and removed the stellar continuum, and we analyzed the residual emission line spectrum to exclude any possible intermediate-type Seyferts. Our final catalog comprises 31 Sy2 galaxies with median redshift z~0.1. X-ray spectroscopy is performed using the available X-ray spectra from the 3XMM and the XMMFITCAT catalogs. Implementing various indicators of obscuration, we find seven (~23%) Compton-thick AGN. The X-ray spectroscopic Compton-thick classification agrees with other commonly used diagnostics, such as the X-ray to mid-IR luminosity ratio and the X-ray to [OIII] luminosity ratio. Most importantly, we find four (~13%) unobscured Sy2 galaxies, at odds with the simplest unification model. Their accretion rates are significantly lower than the rest of our Sy2 sample, in agreement with previous studies that predict the absence of the broad line region below a certain Eddington ratio threshold.
