Atiyah class and sheaf counting on local Calabi Yau fourfolds

We discuss Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants of torsion sheaves with 2 dimensional support on a smooth projective surface in an ambient non-compact Calabi Yau fourfold given by the total space of a rank 2 bundle on the surface. We prove that in certain cases, when the rank 2 bundle is chosen appropriately, the universal truncated Atiyah class of these codimension 2 sheaves reduces to one, defined over the moduli space of such sheaves realized as torsion codimension 1 sheaves in a noncompact divisor (threefold) embedded in the ambient fourfold. Such reduction property of universal Atiyah class enables us to relate our fourfold DT theory to a reduced DT theory of a threefold and subsequently then to the moduli spaces of sheaves on the base surface using results in arXiv:1701.08899 and arXiv:1701.08902 and . We finally make predictions about modularity of such fourfold invariants when the base surface is an elliptic K3.

Vertical sheaves and Fourier-Mukai transform on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds

This paper studies the action of the Fourier-Mukai transform on moduli spaces of vertical torsion sheaves on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds in Weierstrass form. Moduli stacks of semistable one dimensional sheaves on such threefolds are identified with open and closed substacksof moduli stacks of vertical semistable two dimensional sheaves on their Fourier-Mukai duals. In particular, this yields explicit conjectural results for Donaldson-Thomas invariants of vertical two dimensional sheaves on K3-fibered elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Geometric engineering of (framed) BPS states

BPS quivers for N=2 SU(N) gauge theories are derived via geometric engineering from derived categories of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. While the outcome is in agreement of previous low energy constructions, the geometric approach leads to several new results. An absence of walls conjecture is formulated for all values of N, relating the field theory BPS spectrum to large radius D-brane bound states. Supporting evidence is presented as explicit computations of BPS degeneracies in some examples. These computations also prove the existence of BPS states of arbitrarily high spin and infinitely many marginal stability walls at weak coupling. Moreover, framed quiver models for framed BPS states are naturally derived from this formalism, as well as a mathematical formulation of framed and unframed BPS degeneracies in terms of motivic and cohomological Donaldson-Thomas invariants. We verify the conjectured absence of BPS states with "exotic" SU(2)_R quantum numbers using motivic DT invariants. This application is based in particular on a complete recursive algorithm which determine the unframed BPS spectrum at any point on the Coulomb branch in terms of noncommutative Donaldson-Thomas invariants for framed quiver representations.

Parabolic refined invariants and Macdonald polynomials

A string theoretic derivation is given for the conjecture of Hausel, Letellier, and Rodriguez-Villegas on the cohomology of character varieties with marked points. Their formula is identified with a refined BPS expansion in the stable pair theory of a local root stack, generalizing previous work of the first two authors in collaboration with G. Pan. Haiman's geometric construction for Macdonald polynomials is shown to emerge naturally in this context via geometric engineering. In particular this yields a new conjectural relation between Macdonald polynomials and refined local orbifold curve counting invariants. The string theoretic approach also leads to a new spectral cover construction for parabolic Higgs bundles in terms of holomorphic symplectic orbifolds.

Moduli of ADHM Sheaves and Local Donaldson-Thomas Theory

The ADHM construction establishes a one-to-one correspondence between framed torsion free sheaves on the projective plane and stable framed representations of a quiver with relations in the category of complex vector spaces. This paper studies the geometry of moduli spaces of representations of the same quiver with relations in the abelian category of coherent sheaves on a smooth complex projective curve $X$. In particular it is proven that this moduli space is virtually smooth and related byrelative Beilinson spectral sequence to the curve counting construction via stable pairs of Pandharipande and Thomas. This yields a new conjectural construction for the local Donaldson-Thomas theory of curves as well as a natural higher rank generalization.

Chamber Structure and Wallcrossing in The ADHM Theory of Curves I

ADHM invariants are equivariant virtual invariants of moduli spaces of twisted cyclic representations of the ADHM quiver in the abelian category of coherent sheaves of a smooth complex projective curve X. The goal of the present paper is to present a generalization of this construction employing a more general stability condition which depends on a real parameter. This yields a chamber structure in the ADHM theory of curves, residual ADHM invariants being defined by equivariant virtual integration in each chamber. Wallcrossing results and applications to local stable pair invariants will be presented in the second part of this work.

Chamber Structure and Wallcrossing in the ADHM Theory of Curves II

This is the second part of a project concerning variation of stability and chamber structure for ADHM invariants of curves. Wallcrossing formulas for such invariants are derived using the theory of stack function Ringel-Hall algebras constructed by Joyce and the theory of generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Joyce and Song. Some applications are presented, including strong rationality for local stable pair invariants of higher genus curves and comparison with wallcrossing formulas of Kontsevich and Soibelman, and the halo formula of Denef and Moore.

Rank Two ADHM Invariants and Wallcrossing

Generalized Donaldson-Thomas invariants corresponding to local D6-D2-D0 configurations are defined applying the formalism of Joyce and Song to ADHM sheaves on curves. A wallcrossing formula for invariants of D6-rank two is proven and shown to agree with the wallcrossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman. Using this result, the asymptotic D6-rank two invariants of (-1,-1) and (0,-2) local rational curves are computed in terms of the D6-rank one invariants.

A D-Brane Landscape on Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We explore the dynamics of magnetized nonsupersymmetric D5-brane configurations on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with fluxes. We show that supergravity D-terms capture supersymmetry breaking effects predicted by more abstract Pi-stability considerations. We also examine superpotential interactions in the presence of fluxes, and investigate the vacuum structure of such configurations. Based on the shape of the potential, we argue that metastable nonsupersymmetric vacua can be in principle obtained by tuning the values of fluxes.

Black String Entropy and Fourier-Mukai Transform

We propose a microscopic description of black strings in F-theory based on string duality and Fourier-Mukai transform. These strings admit several different microscopic descriptions involving D-brane as well as M2 or M5-brane configurations on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular our results can also be interpreted as an asymptotic microstate count for D6-D2-D0 configurations in the limit of large D2-charge on the elliptic fiber. The leading behavior of the microstate degeneracy in this limit is shown to agree with the macroscopic entropy formula derived from the black string supergravity solution.

E8 Gauge Theory, and a Derivation of K-Theory from M-Theory

The partition function of Ramond-Ramond p-form fields in Type IIA supergravity on a ten-manifold X contains subtle phase factors that are associated with T-duality, self-duality, and the relation of the RR fields to K-theory. The analogous partition function of M-theory on X x S1 contains subtle phases that are similarly associated with E8 gauge theory. We analyze the detailed phase factors on the two sides and show that they agree, thereby testing M-theory/Type IIA duality as well as the K-theory formalism in an interesting way. We also show that certain D-brane states wrapped on nontrivial homology cycles are actually unstable, that (-1)^{F_L} symmetry in Type IIA superstring theory depends in general on a cancellation between a fermion anomaly and an anomaly of RR fields, and that Type IIA superstring theory with no wrapped branes is well-defined only on a spacetime with W_7=0.

Fractional Branes in Landau-Ginzburg Orbifolds

We construct fractional branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifold categories and study their behavior under marginal closed string perturbations. This approach is shown to be more general than the rational boundary state construction. In particular we find new D-branes on the quintic -- such as a single D0-brane -- which are not restrictions of bundles on the ambient projective space. We also exhibit a family of deformations of the D0-brane in the Landau-Ginzburg category parameterized by points on the Fermat quintic.

Obstructed D-Branes in Landau-Ginzburg Orbifolds

We study deformations of Landau-Ginzburg D-branes corresponding to obstructed rational curves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We determine D-brane moduli spaces and D-brane superpotentials by evaluating higher products up to homotopy in the Landau-Ginzburg orbifold category. For concreteness we work out the details for lines on a perturbed Fermat quintic. In this case we show that our results reproduce the local analytic structure of the Hilbert scheme of curves on the threefold.

Enhanced D-Brane Categories from String Field Theory

We construct D-brane categories in B-type topological string theory as solutions to string field equations of motion. Using the formalism of superconnections, we show that these solutions form a variant of a construction of Bondal and Kapranov. This analysis is an elaboration on recent work of Lazaroiu. We also comment on the relation between string field theory and the derived category approach of Douglas, and Aspinwall and Lawrence. Non-holomorphic deformations make a somewhat unexpected appearance in this construction.

A Non-Renormalization Theorem for the d=1, N=8 Vector Multiplet

Sigma models describing low energy effective actions on D0-brane probes with N=8 supercharges are studied in detail using a manifestly d=1, N=4 super-space formalism. Two 0+1 dimensional N=4 multiplets together with their general actions are constructed. We derive the condition for these actions to be N=8 supersymmetric and apply these techniques to various D-brane configurations. We find that if in addition to N=8 supersymmetry the action must also have Spin(5) invariance, the form of the sigma model metric is uniquely determined by the one-loop result and is not renormalized perturbatively or non-perturbatively.

Duality in Matrix Theory and Three Dimensional Mirror Symmetry

Certain limits of the duality between M-theory on ${T^5/Z_2}$ and IIB on K3 are analyzed in Matrix theory. The correspondence between M-theory five-branes and ALE backgrounds is realized as three dimensional mirror symmetry. Non-critical strings dual to open membranes are explicitly described as gauge theory excitations. We also comment on Type IIA on K3 and the appearance of gauge symmetry enhancement at special points in the moduli space.
