Rationality of descendent series for Hilbert and Quot schemes of surfaces

Quot schemes of quotients of a trivial bundle of arbitrary rank on a nonsingular projective surface X carry perfect obstruction theories and virtual fundamental classes whenever the quotient sheaf has at most 1-dimensional support. The associated generating series of virtual Euler characteristics was conjectured to be a rational function when X is simply connected. We conjecture here the rationality of more general descendent series with insertions obtained from the Chern characters of the tautological sheaf. We prove the rationality of descendent series in Hilbert scheme cases for all curve classes and in Quot scheme cases when the curve class is 0.

The virtual K-theory of Quot schemes of surfaces

We study virtual invariants of Quot schemes parametrizing quotients of dimension at most 1 of the trivial sheaf of rank N on nonsingular projective surfaces. We conjecture that the generating series of virtual K-theoretic invariants are given by rational functions. We prove rationality for several geometries including punctual quotients for all smooth projective surfaces and dimension 1 quotients for surfaces X with p_g>0. We also show that the generating series of virtual cobordism classes can be irrational. Given a K-theory class on X of rank r, we associate natural series of virtual Segre and Verlinde numbers. We show that the Segre and Verlinde series match in the following three cases: Quot schemes of dimension 0 quotients, Hilbert schemes of points and curves over surfaces with p_g>0, Quot schemes of minimal elliptic surfaces for quotients supported on fiber classes. Moreover, for punctual quotients of the trivial sheaf of rank N, we prove a new symmetry of the Segre/Verlinde series exchanging r and N. The Segre/Verlinde statements have analogues for punctual Quot schemes over curves.

Determining Tropical Hypersurfaces

We consider the question of when points in tropical affine space uniquely determine a tropical hypersurface. We introduce a notion of multiplicity of points so that this question may be meaningful even if some of the points coincide. We give a geometric/combinatorial way and a tropical linear-algebraic way to approach this question. First, given a fixed hypersurface, we show how one can determine whether points on the hypersurface determine it by looking at a corresponding marking of the dual complex. With a regularity condition on the dual complex and when the number of points is minimal, we show that our condition is equivalent to the connectedness of an appropriate sub-complex. Second, we introduce notions of non-singularity of tropical matrices and solutions to tropical linear equations that take into account our notion of multiplicity and prove a Cramer's Rule type theorem relating them.

Le Potier's strange duality, quot schemes, and multiple point formulas for del Pezzo surfaces

We study Le Potier's strange duality on del Pezzo surfaces using quot schemes to construct independent sections of theta line bundles on moduli spaces of sheaves, one of which is the Hilbert scheme of n points. For n at most 7, we use multiple point formulas to count the length of the quot scheme, which agrees with the dimension of the space of sections on the Hilbert scheme. When the surface is the projective plane and n is arbitrary, we use nice resolutions of general stable sheaves to show that the quot schemes that arise are finite and reduced. Combining our results, we obtain a lower bound on the rank of the strange duality map, as well as evidence that the map is injective when n is at most 7.

Landau-Ginzburg Mirror Symmetry for Orbifolded Frobenius Algebras

We prove the Landau-Ginzburg Mirror Symmetry Conjecture at the level of (orbifolded) Frobenius algebras for a large class of invertible singularities, including arbitrary sums of loops and Fermats with arbitrary symmetry groups. Specifically, we show that for a quasi-homogeneous polynomial W and an admissible group G within the class, the Frobenius algebra arising in the FJRW theory of [W/G] is isomorphic (as a Frobenius algebra) to the orbifolded Milnor ring of [W^T/G^T], associated to the dual polynomial W^T and dual group G^T.
