Phonon wave packet emission during state preparation of a semiconductor quantum dot using different schemes

The carrier-phonon interaction in semiconductor quantum dots can greatly affect the optical preparation of the excited state. For resonant excitation used in the Rabi preparation scheme, the polaron is formed accompanied by the emission of a phonon wave packet, leading to a degradation of preparation fidelity. In this paper, phonon wave packets for different coherent excitation schemes are analyzed. One example is the adiabatic rapid passage scheme relying on a chirped excitation. Here, also a phonon wave packet is emitted, but the preparation fidelity can still be approximately unity. A focus is on the phonon impact on a recently proposed swing-up scheme, induced by two detuned pulses. Similar to the Rabi scheme, a degradation and a phonon wave packet emission is found, despite the detuning. If the swing-up frequency coincides with the maximum of the phonon spectral density, a series of wave packets is emitted yielding an even stronger degradation. The insight gained from our results will further help in designing an optimal preparation scheme for quantum dots.

Structural symmetry-breaking to explain radiative Auger transitions in self-assembled quantum dots

The optical spectrum of a quantum dot is typically dominated by the fundamental transition between the lowest-energy configurations. However, the radiative Auger process can result in additional red-shifted emission lines. The origin of these lines is a combination of Coulomb interaction and symmetry-breaking in the quantum dot. In this paper, we present measurements of such radiative Auger lines for a range of InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots and use a tight-binding model with a configuration interaction approach to explain their appearance. Introducing a composition fluctuation cluster in the dot, our calculations show excellent agreement with measurements. We relate our findings to group theory explaining the origin of the additional emission lines. Our model and results give insight into the interplay between the symmetry breaking in a quantum dot and the position and strength of the radiative Auger lines.

SUPER Scheme in Action: Experimental Demonstration of Red-detuned Excitation of a Quantum Dot

The quest for the perfect single-photon source includes finding the optimal protocol for exciting the quantum emitter. Based on a recently proposed, so-called SUPER (swing-up of quantum emitter population) scheme, we demonstrate experimentally that two red-detuned laser pulses, neither of which could yield a significant upper-level population individually, lead to the coherent excitation of a semiconductor quantum dot. We characterize the emitted single photons and show that they have properties comparable to those achieved under resonant excitation schemes.

Femtosecond Transfer and Manipulation of Persistent Hot-Trion Coherence in a Single CdSe/ZnSe Quantum Dot

Ultrafast transmission changes around the fundamental trion resonance are studied after exciting a p-shell exciton in a negatively charged II-VI quantum dot. The biexcitonic induced absorption reveals quantum beats between hot trion states at 133 GHz. While interband dephasing is dominated by relaxation of the P-shell hole within 390 fs, trionic coherence remains stored in the spin system for 85 ps due to Pauli blocking of the triplet electron. The complex spectro-temporal evolution of transmission is explained analytically by solving the Maxwell-Liouville equations. Pump and probe polarizations provide full control over amplitude and phase of the quantum beats.

Swing-up of quantum emitter population using detuned pulses

The controlled preparation of the excited state in a quantum emitter is a prerequisite for its usage as single-photon sources - a key building block for quantum technologies. In this paper we propose a coherent excitation scheme using off-resonant pulses. In the usual Rabi scheme, these pulses would not lead to a significant occupation. This is overcome by using a frequency modulated pulse to swing up the excited state population. The same effect can be obtained using two pulses with different strong detunings of the same sign. We theoretically analyze the applicability of the scheme to a semiconductor quantum dot. In this case the excitation is several meV below the band gap, i.e., far away from the detection frequency allowing for easy spectral filtering, and does not rely on any auxiliary particles such as phonons. Our scheme has the potential to lead to the generation of close-to-ideal photons.

Dynamical calculation of third harmonic generation in a semiconductor quantum well

Non-linear phenomena in optically excited semiconductor structures are of high interest. We here develop a model capable of studying the dynamics of the photoexcited carriers, including Coulomb interaction on a Hartree-Fock level, on the same footing as the dynamics of the light field impinging on an arbitrary photonic structure. Applying this method to calculate the third harmonic generation in a semiconductor quantum well embedded in a Bragg mirror structure, we find that the power-law exponent of the intensity dependence of the third harmonic generation depends on the frequency of the exciting pulse. Off-resonant pulses follow the expected cubic dependence, while the exponent is smaller for resonant pulses due to saturation effects in the induced carrier density. Our study provides a detailed understanding of the carrier and light field dynamics during non-linear processes.
