Stable pairs with a twist and gluing morphisms for moduli of surfaces

We propose an alternative definition for families of stable pairs $(X,D)$ over a possibly non-reduced base when $D$ is reduced, by replacing $(X,D)$ with an appropriate orbifold pair $(\mathcal X,\mathcal D)$. This definition of a stable family ends up being equivalent to previous ones, but has the advantage of being more amenable to the tools of deformation theory. Moreover, adjunction for $(\mathcal X,\mathcal D)$ holds on the nose; there is no correction term coming from the different. This leads to the existence of functorial gluing morphisms for families of stable surfaces and functorial morphisms from $(n + 1)$ dimensional stable pairs to $n$ dimensional polarized orbispace. As an application, we study the deformation theory of some surface pairs.

Moduli of fibered surface pairs from twisted stable maps

We use the theory of twisted stable maps to Deligne-Mumford stacks to construct compactifications of the moduli space of pairs $(X \to C, S + F)$ where $X \to C$ is a fibered surface, $S$ is a sum of sections, $F$ is a sum of marked fibers, and $(X, S + F)$ is a stable pair in the sense of the minimal model program. This generalizes the work of Abramovich-Vistoli, who compactified the moduli space of fibered surfaces without marked fibers. Furthermore, we compare our compactification to Alexeev's space of stable maps and the KSBA compactification of stable pairs. As an application, we describe the boundary of the compactification of the moduli space of elliptic surfaces.

The tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme

The purpose of this paper is to study the Zariski tangent space of the punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing subschemes of a smooth surface which are supported at a single point. We give a lower bound on the dimension of the tangent space in general and show the bound is sharp for subschemes of the affine plane cut out by monomials. Furthermore for monomial subschemes we give an explicit combinatorial formula for the dimension of the tangent space.

The Topology of Equivariant Hilbert Schemes

For $G$ a finite group acting linearly on $\mathbb{A}^2$, the equivariant Hilbert scheme $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ is a natural resolution of singularities of $\operatorname{Sym}^r(\mathbb{A}^2/G)$. In this paper we study the topology of $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ for abelian $G$ and how it depends on the group $G$. We prove that the topological invariants of $\operatorname{Hilb}^r[\mathbb{A}^2/G]$ are periodic or quasipolynomial in the order of the group $G$ as $G$ varies over certain families of abelian subgroups of $GL_2$. This is done by using the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition to compute topological invariants in terms of the combinatorics of a certain set of partitions.

Quantum field theory over F1

In this paper we discuss some questions about geometry over the field with one element, motivated by the properties of algebraic varieties that arise in perturbative quantum field theory. We follow the approach to F1-geometry based on torified schemes. We first discuss some simple necessary conditions in terms of Euler characteristic and classes in the Grothendieck ring, then we give a blowup formula for torified varieties and we show that the wonderful compactifications of the graph configuration spaces, that arise in the computation of Feynman integrals in position space, admit an F1-structure. By a similar argument we show that the moduli spaces of curves of genus zero with n marked points admit an F1-structure. We also discuss conditions on hyperplane arrangements, a possible notion of embedded F1-structure and its relation to Chern classes, and questions on Chern classes of varieties with regular torifications.
