Kirchhoff's theorem for Prym varieties

We prove an analogue of Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem for computing the volume of the tropical Prym variety for double covers of metric graphs. We interpret the formula in terms of a semi-canonical decomposition of the tropical Prym variety, via a careful study of the tropical Abel-Prym map. In particular, we show that the map is harmonic, determine its degree at every cell of the decomposition, and prove that its global degree is $2^{g-1}$. Along the way, we use the Ihara zeta function to provide a new proof of the analogous result for finite graphs. As a counterpart, the appendix by Sebastian Casalaina-Martin shows that the degree of the algebraic Abel-Prym map is $2^{g-1}$ as well.

Lump interactions with plane solitons

We analyse the detail of interactions of two-dimensional solitary waves called lumps and one-dimensional line solitons within the framework of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation describing wave processes in media with positive dispersion. We show that line solitons can emit or absorb lumps or periodic chains of lumps; they can interact with each other by means of lumps. Within a certain time interval, lumps or lump chains can emerge between two line solitons and disappear then due to absorption by one of the solitons. This phenomenon resembles the appearance of rogue waves in the oceans. The results obtained are graphically illustrated and can be applicable to the description of physical processes occurring in plasma, fluids, solids, nonlinear optical media, and other fields.

Principal bundles on metric graphs: the $\mathrm{GL}_n$ case

Using the notion of a root datum of a reductive group $G$ we propose a tropical analogue of a principal $G$-bundle on a metric graph. We focus on the case $G=\mathrm{GL}_n$, i.e. the case of vector bundles. Here we give a characterization of vector bundles in terms of multidivisors and use this description to prove analogues of the Weil--Riemann--Roch theorem and the Narasimhan--Seshadri correspondence. We proceed by studying the process of tropicalization. In particular, we show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the moduli space of semistable vector bundles on a Tate curve is isomorphic to a certain component of the moduli space of semistable tropical vector bundles on its dual metric graph.

Lump chains in the KP-I equation

We construct a broad class of solutions of the KP-I equation by using a reduced version of the Grammian form of the $τ$-function. The basic solution is a linear periodic chain of lumps propagating with distinct group and wave velocities. More generally, our solutions are evolving linear arrangements of lump chains, and can be viewed as the KP-I analogues of the family of line-soliton solutions of KP-II. However, the linear arrangements that we construct for KP-I are more general, and allow degenerate configurations such as parallel or superimposed lump chains. We also construct solutions describing interactions between lump chains and individual lumps, and discuss the relationship between the solutions obtained using the reduced and regular Grammian forms.

Zeta functions of edge-free quotients of graphs

We consider the Ihara zeta function $ζ(u,X//G)$ and Artin-Ihara $L$-function of the quotient graph of groups $X//G$, where $G$ is a group acting on a finite graph $X$ with trivial edge stabilizers. We determine the relationship between the primes of $X$ and $X//G$ and show that $X\to X//G$ can be naturally viewed as an unramified Galois covering of graphs of groups. We show that the $L$-function of $X//G$ evaluated at the regular representation is equal to $ζ(u,X)$ and that $ζ(u,X//G)$ divides $ζ(u,X)$. We derive two-term and three-term determinant formulas for the zeta and $L$-functions, and compute several examples of $L$-functions of edge-free quotients of the tetrahedron graph $K_4$.

Closed symmetric 3-differentials on complex surfaces

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a non-degenerate symmetric 3-differential with nonzero Blaschke curvature on a complex surface to be locally representable as a product of three closed holomorphic 1-forms. We give two versions of this condition corresponding to different choices of coordinates, one of which defines a coordinate-free differential operator, answering a question of Bogomolov and de Oliveira.

Dense PGL-orbits in products of Grassmannians

In this paper, we find some necessary and sufficient conditions on the dimension vector $\underline{\bf{d}} = (d_1,..., d_k; n)$ so that the diagonal action of $\mathbb{P}GL(n)$ on $\prod_{i=1}^k Gr(d_i;n)$ has a dense orbit. Consequently, we obtain some algorithms for finding dense and sparse dimension vectors and classify dense dimension vectors with small length or size. We also characterize the dense dimension vectors of the form $(d,d,..., d; n)$.

Non-periodic one-gap potentials in quantum mechanics

We describe a broad class of bounded non-periodic potentials in one-dimensional stationary quantum mechanics having the same spectral properties as periodic potentials. The spectrum of the corresponding Schroedinger operator consists of a finite or infinite number of allowed bands separated by gaps. In this letter we consider the simplest class of potentials, whose spectra consist of an interval on the negative semiaxis and the entire positive axis. The potentials are reflectionless, and a particle with positive energy moves freely in both directions. The potential is constructed as a limit of Bargmann potentials and is determined by a Riemann-Hilbert problem, which is equivalent to a pair of singular integral equations that can be efficiently solved using numerical techniques.

The zero section of the universal semiabelian variety, and the double ramification cycle

We study the Chow ring of the boundary of the partial compactification of the universal family of principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav). We describe the subring generated by divisor classes, and compute the class of the partial compactification of the universal zero section, which turns out to lie in this subring. Our formula extends the results for the zero section of the universal uncompactified family. The partial compactification of the universal family of ppav can be thought of as the first two boundary strata in any toroidal compactification of the moduli space of ppav. Our formula provides a first step in a program to understand the Chow groups of toroidal compactifications of the moduli of ppav, especially of the perfect cone compactification, by induction on genus. By restricting to the locus of Jacobians of curves, our results extend the results of Hain on the double ramification (two-branch-point) cycle.

A discrete analogue of the modified Novikov-Veselov hierarchy

We construct a discrete analogue of the integrable two-dimensional Dirac operator and describe the spectral properties of its eigenfunctions. We construct an integrable discrete analogue of the modified Novikov-Veselov hierarchy. We derive the first two equations of the hierarchy and give explicit formulas for the eigenfunctions in terms of the theta-functions of the associated spectral curve.

The double ramification cycle and the theta divisor

We compute the classes of universal theta divisors of degrees zero and g-1 over the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves, with various integer weights on the points, in particular reproving a recent result of Müller. We also obtain a formula for the class in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves of compact type of the double ramification locus, given by the condition that a fixed linear combination of the marked points is a principal divisor, reproving a recent result of Hain. Our approach for computing the theta divisor is more direct, via test curves and the geometry of the theta divisor, and works easily over the entire Deligne-Mumford compactification. We use our extended result in another paper to study the partial compactification of the double ramification cycle.

A note on critical points of integrals of soliton equations

We consider the problem of extending the integrals of motion of soliton equations to the space of all finite-gap solutions. We consider the critical points of these integrals on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces with marked points and jets of local coordinates. We show that the solutions of the corresponding variational problem have an explicit description in terms of real-normalized differentials on the spectral curve. Such conditions have previously appeared in a number of problems of mathematical physics.
