The Solar-wind with Hydrogen Ion Exchange and Large-scale Dynamics (SHIELD) model: A Self-Consistent Kinetic-MHD Model of the Outer Heliosphere

Neutral hydrogen has been shown to greatly impact the plasma flow in the heliopshere and the location of the heliospheric boundaries. We present the results of the Solar-wind with Hydrogen Ion Exchange and Large-scale Dynamics (SHIELD) model, a new, self-consistent, kinetic-MHD model of the outer heliosphere within the Space Weather Modeling Framework. The charge-exchange mean free path is on order of the size of the heliosphere; therefore, the neutral atoms cannot be described as a fluid. The SHIELD model couples the MHD solution for a single plasma fluid to the kinetic solution from for neutral hydrogen atoms streaming through the system. The kinetic code is based on the Adaptive Mesh Particle Simulator (AMPS), a Monte Carlo method for solving the Boltzmann equation. The SHIELD model accurately predicts the increased filtration of interstellar neutrals into the heliosphere. In order to verify the correct implementation within the model, we compare the results of the SHIELD model to other, well-established kinetic-MHD models. The SHIELD model matches the neutral hydrogen solution of these studies as well as the shift in all heliospheric boundaries closer to the Sun in comparison the the multi-fluid treatment of the neutral hydrogen atoms. Overall the SHIELD model shows excellent agreement to these models and is a significant improvement to the fluid treatment of interstellar hydrogen.

An Efficient Second-Order Accurate and Continuous Interpolation for Block-Adaptive Grids

In this paper we present a second-order and continuous interpolation algorithm for cell-centered adaptive-mesh-refinement (AMR) grids. Continuity requirement poses a non-trivial problem at resolution changes. We develop a classification of the resolution changes, which allows us to employ efficient and simple linear interpolation in the majority of the computational domain. The benefit of such approach is higher efficiency. The algorithm is well suited for massively parallel computations. Our interpolation algorithm allows extracting jump-free interpolated data distribution along lines and surfaces within the computational domain. This capability is important for various applications, including kinetic particles tracking in three dimensional vector fields, visualization (i.e. surface extraction) and extracting variables along one-dimensional curves such as field lines, streamlines and satellite trajectories, etc. Particular examples of the latter are models for acceleration of solar energetic particles (SEPs) along magnetic field-lines. As such models are sensitive to sharp gradients and discontinuities the capability to interpolate the data from the AMR grid to be passed to the SEP model without producing false gradients numerically becomes crucial. The code implementation of our algorithm is publicly available as a Fortran 90 library.

Semi-analytical calculations for parameters of boiling layer in isetropic expansion of warm dense matter with van der Waals equation of state

Features and parameters of \boiling" liquid layer, which arises under conditions of isentropic expansion of warm dense matter (WDM), are stud- ied with the use of simplest van der Waals equation of state (EOS). Advan- tage of this EOS is possibility of demonstrable and semi-analytical descrip- tion of thermo- and hydrodynamics of the process. Idealized self-similar case of behavior of matter on interception of equilibrium (not metastable) isoentropic curve and boundary of gas-liquid coexistence curve (binodal) is analyzed. The possibility of formation of such "liquid layer" was studied previously in [1] during solving the problem of ablation of metal surface under the action of strong laser radiation. Peculiarity of such "freezing" of finite portion of expanding matter in the state, which corresponds to the binodal of gas-liquid or/and other phase transitions|so called "phase freezeout"and prospects of applications of this phenomenon for intended generation of uniform and extensive zone of previously unexplored states of matter were discussed in [2].
