A calculus for flow categories

We describe a calculus of moves for modifying a framed flow category without changing the associated stable homotopy type. We use this calculus to show that if two framed flow categories give rise to the same stable homotopy type of homological width at most three, then the flow categories are move equivalent. The process we describe is essentially algorithmic and can often be performed by hand, without the aid of a computer program.

On an integral version of the Rasmussen invariant

We define a Rasmussen $s$-invariant over the coefficient ring of the integers, and show how it is related to the $s$-invariants defined over a field. A lower bound for the slice genus of a knot arising from it is obtained, and we give examples of knots for which this lower bound is better than all lower bounds coming from the $s$-invariants over fields. We also compare it to the Lipshitz-Sarkar refinement related to the first Steenrod square.

A scanning algorithm for odd Khovanov homology

We adapt Bar-Natan's scanning algorithm for fast computations in (even) Khovanov homology to odd Khovanov homology. We use a mapping cone construction instead of a tensor product, which allows us to deal efficiently with the more complicated sign assignments in the odd theory. The algorithm has been implemented in a computer program. We also use the algorithm to determine the odd Khovanov homology of 3-strand torus links.

An sl_n stable homotopy type for matched diagrams

There exists a simplified Bar-Natan Khovanov complex for open 2-braids. The Khovanov cohomology of a knot diagram made by gluing tangles of this type is therefore often amenable to calculation. We lift this idea to the level of the Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and use it to make new computations. Similarly, there exists a simplified Khovanov-Rozansky sl_n complex for open 2-braids with oppositely oriented strands and an even number of crossings. Diagrams made by gluing tangles of this type are called matched diagrams, and knots admitting matched diagrams are called bipartite knots. To a pair consisting of a matched diagram and a choice of integer n >= 2, we associate a stable homotopy type. In the case n = 2 this agrees with the Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type of the underlying knot. In the case n >= 3 the cohomology of the stable homotopy type agrees with the sl_n Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology of the underlying knot. We make some consistency checks of this sl_n stable homotopy type and show that it exhibits interesting behaviour. For example we find a CP^2 in the sl_3 type for some diagram, and show that the sl_4 type can be interesting for a diagram for which the Lipshitz-Sarkar type is a wedge of Moore spaces.

Morse moves in flow categories

We pursue the analogy of a framed flow category with the flow data of a Morse function. In classical Morse theory, Morse functions can sometimes be locally altered and simplified by the Morse moves. These moves include the Whitney trick which removes two oppositely framed flowlines between critical points of adjacent index and handle cancellation which removes two critical points connected by a single flowline. A framed flow category is a way of encoding flow data such as that which may arise from the flowlines of a Morse function or of a Floer functional. The Cohen-Jones-Segal construction associates a stable homotopy type to a framed flow category whose cohomology is designed to recover the corresponding Morse or Floer cohomology. We obtain analogues of the Whitney trick and of handle cancellation for framed flow categories: in this new setting these are moves that can be performed to simplify a framed flow category without changing the associated stable homotopy type. These moves often enable one to compute by hand the stable homotopy type associated to a framed flow category. We apply this in the setting of the Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type (corresponding to Khovanov cohomology) and the stable homotopy type of a matched diagram due to the authors (corresponding to sl_n Khovanov-Rozansky cohomology).

Intersection homology of linkage spaces in odd dimensional Euclidean space

We consider the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_d(\ell)$ of a closed linkage with $n$ links and prescribed lengths $\ell\in \mathbb{R}^n$ in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. For $d>3$ these spaces are no longer manifolds generically, but they have the structure of a pseudomanifold. We use intersection homology to assign a ring to these spaces that can be used to distinguish the homeomorphism types of $\mathcal{M}_d(\ell)$ for a large class of length vectors. These rings behave rather differently depending on whether $d$ is even or odd, with the even case having been treated in an earlier paper. The main difference in the odd case comes from an extra generator in the ring which can be thought of as an Euler class of a startified bundle.

Homology of moduli spaces of linkages in high-dimensional Euclidean space

We study the topology of moduli spaces of closed linkages in \R^d depending on a length vector \ell\in \R^n. In particular, we use equivariant Morse theory to obtain information on the homology groups of these spaces, which works best for odd d. In the case d=5 we calculate the Poincare polynomial in terms of combinatorial information encoded in the length vector.

Intersection homology of linkage spaces

We consider the moduli spaces $\mathcal{M}_d(\ell)$ of a closed linkage with n links and prescribed lengths in d-dimensional Euclidean space. For d>3 these spaces are no longer manifolds generically, but they have the structure of a pseudomanifold. We use intersection homology to assign a ring to these spaces that can be used to distinguish the homeomorphism type of the moduli spaces for a large class of length vectors in the case of d even. This result is a high-dimensional analogue of the Walker conjecture which was proven by Farber, Hausmann and the author.

The isomorphism problem of planar polygon spaces

We give a proof of a Conjecture of Walker which states that one can recover the lengths of the bars of a circular linkage from the cohomology ring of the configuration space. For a large class of length vectors, this has been shown by Farber, Hausmann and Schuetz. In the remaining cases, we use Morse theory and the fundamental group to describe a subring of the cohomology invariant under graded ring isomorphism. From this subring the conjecture can be derived by applying a result of Gubeladze on the isomorphism problem of monoidal rings.

Cohomological estimates for $\cat(X,ξ)$

This paper studies the homotopy invariant $\cat(X,ξ)$ introduced in \cite{farbe2}. Given a finite cell-complex $X$, we study the function $ξ\mapsto \cat(X,ξ)$ where $ξ$ varies in the cohomology space $H^1(X;\R)$. Note that $\cat(X,ξ)$ turns into the classical Lusternik - Schnirelmann category $\cat(X)$ in the case $ξ=0$. Interest in $\cat(X,ξ)$ is based on its applications in dynamics where it enters estimates of complexity of the chain recurrent set of a flow admitting Lyapunov closed 1-forms.

Homological category weights and estimates for cat^1(X,ξ)

In this paper we study a new notion of category weight of homology classes developing further the ideas of E. Fadell and S. Husseini. In the case of closed smooth manifolds the homological category weight is equivalent to the cohomological category weight of E. Fadell and S. Husseini but these two notions are distinct already for Poincaré complexes. An important advantage of the homological category weight is its homotopy invariance. We use the notion of homological category weight to study various generalizations of the Lusternik - Schnirelmann category which appeared in the theory of closed one-forms and have applications in dynamics. Our primary goal is to compare two such invariants $\cat(X,ξ)$ and $\cat^1(X,ξ)$ which are defined similarly with reversion of the order of quantifiers. We compute these invariants explicitly for products of surfaces and show that they may differ by an arbitrarily large quantity. The proof of one of our main results, Theorem \ref{main2}, uses an algebraic characterization of homology classes $z\in H_i(\tilde X;\Z)$ (where $\tilde X\to X$ is a free abelian covering) which are movable to infinity of $\tilde X$ with respect to a prescribed cohomology class $ξ\in H^1(X;\R)$. This result is established in Part II which can be read independently of the rest of the paper.
