Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of Nova V2891 Cygni: evidence for shock-induced dust formation

We present multi-epoch optical and near-infrared observations of the highly reddened, \pion{Fe}{ii} class slow nova V2891 Cygni. The observations span 15 months since its discovery. The initial rapid brightening from quiescence, and the presence of a $\sim$35 day long pre-maximum halt, is well documented. The evidence that the current outburst of V2891 Cyg has undergone several distinct episodes of mass ejection is seen through time-varying P Cygni profiles of the O\,{\sc i} 7773\,$Å$ line. A highlight is the occurrence of a dust formation event centred around $\sim$+273d, which coincides with a phase of coronal line emission. The dust mass is found to be $\sim0.83-1.25 \times 10^{-10} M_{\odot}$. There is strong evidence to suggest that the coronal lines are created by shock heating rather than by photoionization. The simultaneous occurrence of the dust and coronal lines (with varying velocity shifts) supports the possibility that dust formation is shock-induced. Such a route for dust formation has not previously been seen in a nova, although the mechanism has been proposed for dust formation in some core-collapse supernovae. Analysis of the coronal lines indicates a gas mass and temperature of 8.35--8.42$\times10^{-7}$ M$_\odot$ and $\sim(4.8-9.1)\times10^{5}$~K respectively, and an overabundance of aluminium and silicon. A Case B analysis of the hydrogen lines yields a mass of the ionized gas of ($8.60\pm1.73)\times10^{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The reddening and distance to the nova are estimated to be $E(B-V)$ = 2.21$\pm$0.15 and $d$ = 5.50 kpc respectively.

Near-infrared studies of V5558 Sgr: an unusually slow nova with multiple outbursts

We present near-infrared (1-2.5 micron) JHK photo-spectroscopic results of the unusually slow nova V5558 Sgr (2007). V5558 Sgr showed a slow climb to maximum that lasted for about 60 days and then underwent at least five strong secondary outbursts. We have analyzed the optical light curve to derive large t2 and t3 values of 281 +/- 3 and 473 +/- 3 days respectively. An alternate approach is adopted to derive a distance estimate of 1.55 +/- 0.25 kpc as conventional MMRD relation may not be applicable for a slow nova. In the pre-maxima stage the spectra showed narrow (FWHM ~ 400 - 550 km/s and strong emission lines of Paschen and Brackett series with prominent P-Cygni components. In the later phase the spectra show significant changes with the development of strong and broad ~ 1000 km/s emission lines of HI, HeI, OI, and NI and some uncommon Fe II emission lines. No evidence of dust formation is seen. V5558 Sgr has been shown to be a rare hybrid nova showing a transition from He/N to Fe II type from optical spectra. However the near-infrared data do not show such a transition and we discuss this anomalous behavior. A recombination analysis of the Brackett lines allows us to constrain the electron density and emission measure during the early optically thick phase and to estimate the mass of the ejecta to be (6.0 +/- 1.5) x 10^(-4) Msun, assuming a filling factor of unity, from later observations.

Near-infrared properties of classical novae: a perspective gained from Mount Abu Infrared Observatory

We review the near-infrared properties of classical novae in the J, H and K bands at wavelengths between 1.08 to 2.4 micron. A classification system exists for the early post-outburst optical spectra of novae on the basis of the strength of group of non-hydrogen emission lines. A similar scheme for the near-infrared regime, which is not available at present, is presented here. In the optical system there are two principal classes, namely, "Fe II" and "He/N" for novae with either prominent Fe II lines or prominent "He/N" lines. There is also a small subset of the hybrid Fe IIb type. From spectroscopic observations we show the differences and similarities between these classes of novae in the near-infrared. The spectral lines common to the two principal classes arise from H, He, N and O. However, the near-IR features that separate these two classes are the numerous, and often strong, Carbon lines which are seen only in the spectra of the Fe II class of novae. The dust formation process in novae is discussed based on broad-band observations. The first-overtone carbon monoxide (CO) detections in novae are analyzed to understand the formation and evolution of this molecule in the nova ejecta and to discuss the observed 12C/13C ratio.

A study of the role of Lyman β fluorescence on OI line strengths in Be stars

The possibility of the Lyβ fluorescence mechanism being operational in classical Be stars and thereby contributing to the strength of the OI 8446 Å line has been recognized for long. However this supposition needs to be quantified by comparing observed and predicted OI line ratios. In the present work, optical and near-infrared spectra of classical Be stars are presented. We analyse the observed strengths of the OI 7774, 8446, 11287 and 13165 Å lines which have been theoretically proposed as diagnostics for identifying the excitation mechanism. We have considered and examined the effects of Lyβ fluorescence, collisional excitation, recombination and continuum fluorescence on these OI line strengths. From our analysis it appears that the Lyβ fluorescence process is indeed operative in Be stars.

Near-infrared Observations of Nova V574 Puppis (2004)

We present results obtained from extensive near-infrared spectroscopic and photometric observations of nova V574 Pup during its 2004 outburst. The observations were obtained over four months, starting from 2004 November 25 (four days after the nova outburst) to 2005 March 20. The near-IR JHK light curve is presented - no evidence is seen from it for dust formation to have occurred during our observations. In the early decline phase, the JHK spectra of the nova are dominated by emission lines of hydrogen Brackett and Paschen series, OI, CI and HeI. We also detect the fairly uncommon Fe II line at 1.6872 micron in the early part of our observations. The strengths of the HeI lines at 1.0830 micron and 2.0585 micron are found to become very strong towards the end of the observations indicating a progression towards higher excitation conditions in the nova ejecta. The width of the emission lines do not show any significant change during the course of our observations. The slope of the continuum spectrum was found to have a lambda^{-2.75} dependence in the early stages which gradually becomes flatter with time and changes to a free-free spectral dependence towards the later stages. Recombination analysis of the HI lines shows deviations from Case B conditions during the initial stages. However, towards the end of our observations, the line strengths are well simulated with case B model values with electron density n_e = 10^{9-10} cm^{-3} and a temperature equal to 10^4 K. Based on our distance estimate to the nova of 5.5 kpc and the observed free-free continuum emission in the later part of the observations, we estimate the ionized mass of the ejecta to be between 10^{-5} and 10^{-6} solar-mass.

Detection and evolution of the CO (v = 2) emission in nova V2615 Ophiuchi (2007)

We present near-infrared (1 - 2.5 micron) spectroscopic and photometric results of Nova V2615 Ophiuchi which was discovered in outburst in 2007 March. Our observations span a period of ~ 80 days starting from 2007 March 28 when the nova was at its maximum light. The evolution of the spectra are shown from the initial P-Cygni phase to an emission-line phase and finally to a dust formation stage. The characteristics of the JHK spectra are very similar to those observed in a nova outburst occurring on a carbon-oxygen white dwarf. We analyse an observed line at 2.088 micron and suggest it could be due to FeII excited by Lyman alpha fluorescence. The highlight of the observations is the detection of the first overtone bands of carbon monoxide (CO) in the 2.29 - 2.40 micron region. The CO bands are modeled to estimate the temperature and mass of the emitting CO gas and also to place limits on the 12C/13C ratio. The CO bands are recorded over several epochs thereby allowing a rare opportunity to study its evolution from a phase of constant strength through a stage when the CO is destroyed fairly rapidly. We compare the observed timescales involved in the evolution of the CO emission and find a good agreement with model predictions that investigate the chemistry in a nova outflow during the early stages.

Rotational spectroscopy of AlO: Low N transitions of astronomical interest in the X^2 Sigma^+ state

The detection of rotational transitions of the AlO radical at millimeter wavelengths from an astronomical source has recently been reported. In view of this, rotational transitions in the ground X^2 Sigma^+ state of AlO have been reinvestigated. Comparisons between Fourier transform and microwave data indicate a discrepancy regarding the derived value of gamma_D in the v = 0 level of the ground state. This discrepancy is discussed in the light of comparisons between experimental data and synthesized rotational spectra in the v = 0, 1 and 2 levels of X^2 Sigma^+. A list of calculated rotational lines in v = 0, 1 and 2 of the ground state up to N' = 11 is presented which should aid astronomers in analysis and interpretation of observed AlO data and also facilitate future searches for this radical.
