Magnetising the ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills plasma

We investigate the thermodynamics of the anisotropic magnetic $\rm AdS_5$ black brane solution found by D'Hoker and Kraus arXiv:0908.3875. This solution is the gravity dual of a strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills plasma in ${\mathbb R}^{3,1}$, with temperature $T$, in the presence of a magnetic field ${\cal B}$. Following the procedure of holographic renormalisation we calculate the Gibbs free energy and the holographic stress tensor of the conformal plasma. We evaluate several thermodynamic quantities including the magnetisation, the anisotropic pressures and the speeds of sound. Our results are consistent with an RG flow from a perturbed $\rm AdS_5$ black brane at small ${\cal B}/T^2$ to a $\rm \bf BTZ \times {\mathbb R}^2$ black brane at large ${\cal B}/T^2$. We also perform a phenomenological analysis where we compare the thermodynamics of a magnetised conformal plasma against the lattice QCD results for the thermodynamics of the magnetised quark-gluon plasma.

Marginally deformed Schrödinger/dipole CFT correspondence

We construct and thoroughly study a new integrable example of the AdS/CFT correspondence with Schrödinger symmetry. On the gravity side, the supergravity solution depends on two parameters and is obtained by marginally deforming the internal space of the Schrödinger background through a series of TsT transformations. On the field theory side, we identify the dual field theory which also depends on two parameters. We find a point-like string solution and derive its dispersion relation. A non-trivial test of the correspondence is provided by using the Landau-Lifshitz coherent state approach to reproduce the leading, in the deformation parameters, terms of that relation. Then, we calculate the Wilson loop, describing the quark/anti-quark potential at strong coupling. It exhibits confining behaviour when the separation length is much less than the Schrödinger parameter. When the separation length is much greater than the Schrödinger parameter the behaviour is that of a conformal theory. Subsequently, we take the Penrose limit along a certain null geodesic of the constructed background and calculate the bosonic spectrum. Based on that spectrum, we make an educated guess for the exact, in the 't Hooft coupling, dispersion relation of the magnon excitations in the original doubly deformed background. This provides us with an exact prediction for the dimensions of the dual field theory operators.

Finite size effects in classical string solutions of the Schrodinger geometry

We study finite size corrections to the semiclassical string solutions of the Schrodinger spacetime. We compute the leading order exponential corrections to the infinite size dispersion relation of the single spin giant magnon and of the single spin single spike solutions. The solutions live in a $S^3$ subspace of the five-sphere and extent in the Schrodinger part of the metric. In the limit of zero deformation the finite size dispersion relations flow to the undeformed $AdS_5 \times S^5$ counterparts and in the infinite size limit the correction term vanishes and the known infinite size dispersion relations are obtained.

Giant Gravitons in the Schrodinger holography

We construct and study new giant graviton configurations in the framework of the non-supersymmetric Schrodinger holography. We confirm in the original Schrodinger spacetime, the picture discovered previously in the pp-wave limit of the geometry, namely that it is the giant graviton that becomes the energetically favored stable configuration compared to the point graviton one. Furthermore, there is a critical value of the deformation above which the point graviton disappears from the spectrum. The former fact leads also to the possibility of tunnelling from the point graviton to the giant graviton configuration. We calculate, explicitly, the instanton solution and its corresponding action which gives a measure of the tunnelling probability. Finally, we evaluate holographically the three-point correlation function of two giant gravitons and one dilaton mode as a function of the Schrodinger invariant.

Giant Gravitons on the Schrodinger pp-wave geometry

We construct a new giant graviton solution on the recently constructed pp-wave geometry of the non-supersymmetric Schrodinger background. That solution exhibits an intriguing behavior as the deformation parameter of the spacetime varies. Firstly, the degeneracy between the giant and the point graviton is lifted for the benefit of the giant graviton as soon as the deformation is turned on. Secondly, when the deformation parameter exceeds a critical value the barrier separating the point from the giant graviton disappears. This suggests that the mere presence of a D3-brane leads to the spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance. We perform a detailed analysis of the full bosonic spectrum, which reveals that the deformation induces a coupling between the scalar and the gauge field fluctuations. It is exactly this coupling that keeps the giant graviton free of tachyonic instabilities. Furthermore, the giant graviton configuration completely breaks the supersymmetry of the pp-wave background, as the Kappa-symmetry analysis suggests.

D3-D5 theories with unquenched flavors

We construct the string duals of the defect theories generated when N_f flavor D5-branes intersect N_c color D3-branes along a 2+1 dimensional subspace. We work in the Veneziano limit in which N_c and N_f are large and N_f/N_c is fixed. By smearing the D5-branes, we find supergravity solutions that take into account the backreaction of the flavor branes and preserve two supercharges. When the flavors are massless the resulting metric displays an anisotropic Lifshitz-like scale invariance. The case of massive quarks is also considered.

Entanglement Entropy of the N=4 SYM spin chain

We present a detailed study of the Entanglement Entropy (EE) of excited states in all closed rank one subsectors of N=4 SYM, namely SU(2), SU(1|1) and SL(2). Exploiting the techniques of the Coordinate and the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz we obtain the EE for spin chains with up to seven magnons, at leading order in the coupling expansion but exact in the length of the spin chain and of the part of it that we cut. Focusing on the superconformal primary operator with two magnons in the BMN limit, we derive analytic and exact, in the coupling $λ'$, expressions for the Renyi and the EE. The interpolating functions for the Renyi and the EE monotonically increase as the coupling increases from the weak coupling $λ' \rightarrow 0$ regime to the strong coupling $λ' \rightarrow \infty$ regime. This results to a violation of a certain bound for the EE that is present at weak coupling and confirms the physical intuition that entanglement increases when the coupling increases.

Entanglement Entropy of the Klebanov-Strassler with dynamical flavors

We present a detailed study of the Entanglement Entropy for the confining Klebanov-Strassler background coupled to a large number of dynamical flavors in the Veneziano limit. As we vary the number of the massless flavors the behavior of the entropy strongly depends on the way we fix the integration constant of the warp factor, that is related to the glueball scale. In the case of massive flavors, the mass of the flavor branes introduces another scale in the background and the entropy undergoes two first order phase transitions. The competition between the glueball and the quark scales will lead to a critical point where one of the phase transitions degenerates to a second order one. We have calculated the critical exponents and have found that they are independent of the number of flavors and different from the mean filed theory expectations.

Holographic Bilayer/Monolayer Phase Transitions

In the present work, we discuss the phase structure of bilayer and monolayer phases in the (2+1)-dimensional defect field theory whose gravity dual is obtained by embedding D5/anti-D5 probe flavour branes in the singular conifold. We study in detail the embedding equations and compare the free energies of the resulting configurations at non-zero temperature and external magnetic field perpendicular to the defects. Moreover, we analyse the meson spectrum and confirm the stability of the single bilayer solution.

Magnetic catalysis in flavored ABJM

We study the magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in the ABJM Chern-Simons matter theory with unquenched flavors in the Veneziano limit. We consider a magnetized D6-brane probe in the background of a flavored black hole which includes the backreaction of massless smeared flavors in the ABJM geometry. We find a holographic realization for the running of the quark mass due to the dynamical flavors. We compute several thermodynamic quantities of the brane probe and analyze the effects of the dynamical quarks on the fundamental condensate and on the phase diagram of the model. The dynamical flavors have an interesting effect on the magnetic catalysis. At zero temperature and fixed magnetic field, the magnetic catalysis is suppressed for small bare quark masses whereas it is enhanced for large values of the mass. When the temperature is non-zero there is a critical magnetic field, above which the magnetic catalysis takes place. This critical magnetic field decreases with the number of flavors, which we interpret as an enhancement of the catalysis.

Multiple backreacted flavour branes

We construct a novel supergravity background holographically dual to the flavoured N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We consider flavours of different masses that produce spherical cavities with radii corresponding to the quark masses. The positive beta function blows at some large radial distance corresponding to the Landau pole of the theory. We explore the Wilson loop between two families of light and heavy quarks and observe a screening of the heavy light potential.

A Novel (2+1)-Dimensional Model of Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We propose a new model of flavour chiral symmetry breaking in a (2+1)-dimensional defect gauge theory of strongly coupled fermions by introducing probe D5/anti-D5-flavour branes on the conifold. After working out the flavour brane embeddings at zero temperature, we thoroughly investigate the spectra of small fluctuations on the world volume of the flavour branes (meson spectrum) and conclude that they are free of tachyons. Thus the proposed probe brane embedding is stable. Moreover, we introduce finite temperature and an external magnetic field and study the thermodynamics of the resulting configurations. Namely, we compute the free energies, entropies, heat capacities and magnetisations. The results are used to establish a detailed phase diagram of the model. We find that the effect of magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking is realised in our model and show that the meson-melting phase transition coincides with the chiral symmetry breaking phase transition. Furthermore, we show that the model is in a diamagnetic phase.

Backreacted flavor in non-commutative gauge theories

We construct the gravity dual of N=1 Non-Commutative SYM theory coupled to Nf smeared massless fundamental flavors. Our solution is analytic and non-perturbative. Near the origin the background reduces to the one corresponding to an ordinary SYM theory. At large radial distances, the dilaton diverges signaling the presence of a UV Landau pole. Considering a probe D3-brane we calculate the effective YM coupling and show that it is independent on the parameter of non-commutativity. We calculate the corresponding beta function and show that it remains positive at all energy scales.

Fermionic impurities in the unquenched ABJM

We study, in a holographic setup, the effect of adding localized fermionic impurities to the three-dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories with unquenched fields in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. The impurities are introduced as probe D6-branes extending along the radial direction and wrapping a five-dimensional submanifold inside a squashed CP^3. We analyze the straight flux tube embeddings and study the corresponding fluctuation modes of the D6-branes. The conformal dimensions of the operators dual to such fluctuations depend non-trivially on the ratio of the flavor number to the Chern-Simon level of the unquenched ABJM.

D3/D7 Quark-Gluon Plasma with Magnetically Induced Anisotropy

We study the effects of the temperature and of a magnetic field in the setup of an intersection of D3/D7 branes, where a large number of D7 branes is smeared in the transverse directions to allow for a perturbative solution in a backreaction parameter. The magnetic field sources an anisotropy in the plasma, and we investigate its physical consequences for the thermodynamics and energy loss of particles probing the system. In particular we comment on the stress-energy tensor of the plasma, the propagation of sound in the directions parallel and orthogonal to the magnetic field, the drag force of a quark moving through the medium and jet quenching.

Thermodynamics of the brane in Chern-Simons matter theories with flavor

We study the holographic dual of flavors in a Chern-Simons matter theory at non-zero temperature, realized as D6-branes in the type IIA black hole dual in the ABJM background geometry. We consider both massive and massless flavors. The former are treated in the quenched approximation, whereas the massless ones are considered as dynamical objects and their backreaction on the geometry is included in the black hole background. We compute the holographically renormalized action of the probe by imposing several physical conditions. In the limit of massless flavors the free energy and entropy of the probe match non-trivially the first variation of these quantities for the backreacted background when the number of flavors is increased by one unit. We compute several thermodynamical functions for the system and analyze the meson melting phase transition between Minkowski and black hole embeddings.

Magnetic catalysis with massive dynamical flavours

Within gauge/gravity duality, we construct a backreacted supergravity background dual to SU(Nc) N=4 SYM coupled to Nf massive fundamental flavours in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our solution is perturbative in a parameter that counts the number of the internal flavour loops. The background has a hollow cavity in the bulk of the geometry, where it is similar to the supergravity dual of a non-commutative SYM. The radius of this cavity is related to the dynamically generated mass of the fundamental fields. We apply our construction to study the effect of magnetic catalysis and develop an appropriate renormalization scheme to compute the free energy and the fundamental condensate of the dual gauge theory as a function of the bare mass. While at leading order in the expansion of the perturbative parameter, the free energy and the fundamental condensate agree with the results obtained in the quenched approximation, at next order we show that the effect of magnetic catalysis is enhanced and the contribution to the condensate of the theory from internal fundamental loops runs logarithmically with the finite cutoff Lambda_UV.

Towards Unquenched Holographic Magnetic Catalysis

We propose a string dual to the SU(Nc) N=4 SYM coupled to Nf massless fundamental flavors in an external magnetic field. The flavors are introduced by homogeneously smeared Nf D7-branes and the external magnetic field via a non-trivial Kalb-Ramond B-field. Our solution is perturbative in a parameter that counts the number of internal flavor loops. In the limit of vanishing B-field the background reduces to the supersymmetric one obtained in hep-th/0612118. We introduce an additional probe D7--brane and in the supersymmetric limit of vanishing B-field perform a holographic renormalization of its "on-shell" action. We consider also non-supersymmetric probes with fixed worldvolume gauge field corresponding to a magnetic field coupled only to the fundamental fields of the probe brane. We study the influence of the backreacted flavors on the effect of dynamical mass generation. Qualitatively the physical picture remains unchanged. In the next step we consider the case when the magnetic field couples to both the backreacted and the probe fundamental degrees of freedom. At sufficiently strong magnetic field the meson spectrum signals an instability of the probe D7-brane, which we interpret as reflecting an instability of the supergravity background.

Holographic duals of SQCD models in low dimensions

We obtain gravity duals to supersymmetric gauge theories in two and three spacetime dimensions with unquenched flavor. The supergravity solutions are generated by a set of color branes wrapping a compact cycle in a Calabi-Yau threefold, together with another set of flavor branes extended along the directions orthogonal to the cycle wrapped by the color branes. We construct supergravity backgrounds which include the backreaction induced by a smeared set of flavor branes, which act as delocalized dynamical sources of the different supergravity fields.

On three-point correlation functions in the gauge/gravity duality

We study the effect of marginal and irrelevant deformations on the renormalization of operators near a CFT fixed point. New divergences in a given operator are determined by its OPE with the operator D that generates the deformation. This provides a scheme to compute the couplings a_DAB between the operator D and two arbitrary operators O_A and O_B. We exemplify for the case of N=4 SYM, considering the simplest case of the exact Lagrangian deformation. In this case the deformed anomalous dimension matrix is determined by the derivative of the anomalous dimension matrix with respect to the coupling. We use integrability techniques to compute the one-loop couplings a_LAB between the Lagrangian and two distinct large operators built with Magnons, in the SU(2) sector of the theory. Then we consider a_DAA at strong coupling, and show how to compute it using the gauge/gravity duality, when D is a chiral operator dual to any supergravity field and O_A is dual to a heavy string state. We exemplify for the Lagrangian and operators O_A dual to heavy string states, showing agreement with the prediction derived from the renormalization group arguments.

Holographic Hadrons in a Confining Finite Density Medium

We study a sector of the hadron spectrum in the presence of finite baryon density. We use a non-supersymmetric gravity dual to a confining guage theory which exhibits a running dilaton. The interaction of mesons with the finite density medium is encoded in the dual theory by a force balancing between flavor D7-branes and a baryon vertex provided by a wrapped D5-brane. When the current quark mass m_q is sufficiently large, the meson mass reduces, exhibiting an interesting spectral flow as we increase the baryon density while it has a more complicated behaviour for very small m_q.

Supersymmetry and Lorentzian holonomy in various dimensions

We present a systematic method for constructing manifolds with Lorentzian holonomy group that are non-static supersymmetric vacua admitting covariantly constant light-like spinors. It is based on the metric of their Riemannian counterparts and the realization that, when certain conditions are satisfied, it is possible to promote constant moduli parameters into arbitrary functions of the light-cone time. Besides the general formalism, we present in detail several examples in various dimensions.
