Evaluation of HTTP/DASH Adaptation Algorithms on Vehicular Networks

Video streaming currently accounts for the majority of Internet traffic. One factor that enables video streaming is HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS), that allows the users to stream video using a bit rate that closely matches the available bandwidth from the server to the client. MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a widely used standard, that allows the clients to select the resolution to download based on their own estimations. The algorithm for determining the next segment in a DASH stream is not partof the standard, but it is an important factor in the resulting playback quality. Nowadays vehicles are increasingly equipped with mobile communication devices, and in-vehicle multimedia entertainment systems. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of various DASH adaptation algorithms over a vehicular network. We present detailed simulation results highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of various adaptation algorithms in delivering video content to vehicular users, and we show how the different adaptation algorithms perform in terms of throughput, playback interruption time, and number of interruptions.

Cooperative Relaying in Underlay Cognitive Systems with Hardware Impairments

The performance of an underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying system with multiple antennas and hardware impairments at each transceiver is investigated. In particular, the outage probability of the end-to-end (e2e) communication is derived in closed-form, when either transmit antenna selection with maximum ratio combining (TAS/MRC), or TAS with selection combining (TAS/SC) are established in each hop. Simplified asymptotic outage expressions are also obtained, which manifest the diversity and array order of the system, the effectiveness of the balance on the number of transmit/receive antennas, and the impact of hardware impairments to the e2e communication.

A Receiver-Centric OFCDM Approach with Subcarrier Grouping

In this letter, following a cross-layer design concept, we propose a novel subcarrier grouping technique for Orthogonal Frequency and Code Division Multiplexing (OFCDM) multiuser systems. We adopt a two dimensional (2D) spreading, so as to achieve both frequency- and time-domain channel gain. Furthermore, we enable a receiver-centric approach, where the receiver rather than a potential sender controls the admission decision of the communication establishment. We study the robustness of the proposed scheme in terms of the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) and the outage probability. The derived results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the classical OFCDM approach.

Performance Analysis of the Ordered V-BLAST Approach over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

The performance of the V-BLAST approach, which utilizes successive interference cancellation (SIC) with optimal ordering, over independent Nakagami-m fading channels is studied. Systems with two transmit and n receive antennas are employed whereas the potential erroneous decision of SIC is also considered. In particular, tight closed-form bound expressions are derived in terms of the average symbol error rate (ASER) and the outage probability, in case of binary and rectangular M-ary constellation alphabets. The mathematical analysis is accompanied with selected performance evaluation and numerical results, which demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approach.
