Leggett modes and the Anderson-Higgs mechanism in superconductors without inversion symmetry

We develop a microscopic and gauge-invariant theory for collective modes resulting from the phase of the superconducting order parameter in non-centrosymmetric superconductors. Considering various crystal symmetries we derive the corresponding gauge mode $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ and find, in particular, new Leggett modes $ω_{\rm L}({\bf q})$ with characteristic properties that are unique to non-centrosymmetric superconductors. We calculate their mass and dispersion that reflect the underlying spin-orbit coupling and thus the balance between triplet and singlet superconductivity occurring simultaneously. Finally, we demonstrate the role of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism: while the long-range Coulomb interaction shifts $ω_{\rm G}({\bf q})$ to the condensate plasma mode $ω_{\rm P}({\bf q})$, it leaves the mass $Λ_0$ of the new Leggett mode unaffected and only slightly modifies its dispersion.

Two-fluid description of two-band superconductors

We present a systematic study of the response properties of two-band (multi-gap) superconductors with spin-singlet (s-wave) pairing correlations, which are assumed to be caused by both intraband (λ_{ii}, i=1,2) and interband (λ_{12}) pairing interactions. In this first of three planned publications we concentrate on the properties of such superconducting systems in global and local thermodynamic equilibrium, the latter including weak perturbations in the stationary long-wavelength limit. The discussion of global thermodynamic equilibrium must include the solution (analytical in the Ginzburg-Landau and the low temperature limit) of the coupled self-consistency equations for the two energy gaps Δ_i(T), i=1,2. These solutions allow to study non-universal behavior of the two relevant BCS-Mühlschlegel parameters, namely the specific heat discontinuity ΔC/C_N and the zero temperature gaps Δ_i(0)/πk_B T_c, i=1,2. The discussion of a local equilibrium situation includes the calculation of the supercurrent density as a property of the condensate, and the calculation of both the specific heat capacity and the spin susceptibility as properties of the gas of thermal excitations in the spirit of a microscopic two-fluid description. Non-monotonic behavior in the temperature dependences of the gaps and all these local response functions is predicted to occur particularly for very small values of the interband pair-coupling constant λ_{12}.

Kinetic theory for response and transport in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

We formulate a kinetic theory for non-centrosymmetric superconductors at low temperatures in the clean limit. The transport equations are solved quite generally in spin- and particle-hole (Nambu) space by performing first a transformation into the band basis and second a Bogoliubov transformation to the quasiparticle-quasihole phase space. Our result is a particle-hole-symmetric, gauge-invariant and charge conserving description, which is valid in the whole quasiclassical regime. We calculate the current response, the specific heat capacity, and the Raman response function. For the Raman case, we investigate within this framework the polarization-dependence of the electronic (pair-breaking) Raman response for the recently discovered non-centrosymmetric superconductors at zero temperature. Possible applications include the systems CePt$_3$Si and Li$_2$Pd$_x$Pt$_{3-x}$B, which reflect the two important classes of the involved spin-orbit coupling. We provide analytical expressions for the Raman vertices for these two classes and calculate the polarization-dependence of the electronic spectra. We predict a two-peak structure and different power laws with respect to the unknown relative magnitude of the singlet and triplet contributions to the superconducting order parameter, revealing a large variety of characteristic fingerprints of the underlying condensate.
