Probing Compactified Extra Dimensions with Gravitational Waves

We study the effect of compact extra dimensions on the gravitational wave luminosity and waveform. We consider a toy model, with a compactified fifth dimension, and matter confined on a brane. We work in the context of five dimensional ($5d$) general relativity, though we do make connections with the corresponding Kaluza-Klein effective $4d$ theory. We show that the luminosity of gravitational waves emitted in $5d$ gravity by a binary with the same characteristics (same masses and separation distance) as a $4d$ binary is 20.8\% less relative to the $4d$ case, to leading post-Newtonian order. The phase of the gravitational waveform differs by 26\% relative to the $4d$ case, to leading post-Newtonian order. Such a correction arises mainly due to the coupling between matter and dilaton field in the effective $4d$ picture and agrees with previous calculations when we set black holes' scalar charges to be those computed from the Kaluza-Klein reduction. The above corrections to the waveform and the luminosity are inconsistent with the gravitational-wave and binary pulsar observations and thus they effectively rule out the possibility of such a simple compactified higher dimensions scenario. We also comment on how our results change if there are several compactified extra dimensions, and show that the discrepancy with $4d$ general relativity only increases.

Computing black hole partition functions from quasinormal modes

We propose a method of computing one-loop determinants in black hole spacetimes (with emphasis on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes) that may be used for numerics when completely-analytic results are unattainable. The method utilizes the expression for one-loop determinants in terms of quasinormal frequencies determined by Denef, Hartnoll and Sachdev in \cite{Denef:2009kn}. A numerical evaluation must face the fact that the sum over the quasinormal modes, indexed by momentum and overtone numbers, is divergent. A necessary ingredient is then a regularization scheme to handle the divergent contributions of individual fixed-momentum sectors to the partition function. To this end, we formulate an effective two-dimensional problem in which a natural refinement of standard heat kernel techniques can be used to account for contributions to the partition function at fixed momentum. We test our method in a concrete case by reproducing the scalar one-loop determinant in the BTZ black hole background. We then discuss the application of such techniques to more complicated spacetimes.

Color kinematic symmetric (BCJ) numerators in a light-like gauge

Color-ordered tree level scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theories can be written as a sum over terms which display the various propagator poles of Feynman diagrams. The numerators in these expressions which are obtained by straightforward application of Feynman rules are not satisfying any particular relations, typically. However, by reshuffling terms, it is known that one can arrive at a set of numerators which satisfy the same Jacobi identity as the corresponding color factors. By extending previous work by us we show how this can be systematically accomplished within a Lagrangian framework. We construct an effective Lagrangian which yields tree-level color-kinematic symmetric numerators in Yang-Mills theories in a light-like gauge at five-points. The five-point effective Lagrangian is non-local and it is zero by Jacobi identity. The numerators obtained from it respect the original pole structure of the color-ordered amplitude. We discuss how this procedure can be systematically extended to higher order.

Gravitino and other spin-3/2 quasinormal modes in Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime

We investigate quasinormal mode frequencies $ω_n$ of gravitinos and generic massive spin-3/2 fields in a Schwarzschild-AdS$_D$ background in spacetime dimension $D>3$, in the black brane (large black hole) limit appropriate to many applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we find asymptotic formulas for $ω_n$ in the limit of large overtone number $n$. Asymptotically, $ω_n \simeq n Δω+ O(\ln n) + O(n^0)$, where $Δω$ is a known constant, and here we compute the $O(\ln n)$ and $O(n^0)$ corrections to the leading $O(n)$ behavior. Then we compare to numerical calculations of exact quasinormal mode frequencies. Along the way, we also improve the reach and accuracy of an earlier, similar analysis of spin-1/2 fields.

Entanglement Temperature and Entanglement Entropy of Excited States

We derive a general relation between the ground state entanglement Hamiltonian and the physical stress tensor within the path integral formalism. For spherical entangling surfaces in a CFT, we reproduce the \emph{local} ground state entanglement Hamiltonian derived by Casini, Huerta and Myers. The resulting reduced density matrix can be characterized by a spatially varying "entanglement temperature." Using the entanglement Hamiltonian, we calculate the first order change in the entanglement entropy due to changes in conserved charges of the ground state, and find a local first law-like relation for the entanglement entropy. Our approach provides a field theory derivation and generalization of recent results obtained by holographic techniques. However, we note a discrepancy between our field theoretically derived results for the entanglement entropy of excited states with a non-uniform energy density and current holographic results in the literature. Finally, we give a CFT derivation of a set of constraint equations obeyed by the entanglement entropy of excited states in any dimension. Previously, these equations were derived in the context of holography.

Tidal stretching of gravitons into classical strings: application to jet quenching with AdS/CFT

Previous work has shown that the standard supergravity approximation can break down when using AdS/CFT duality to study certain top-down formulations of the jet stopping problem in strongly-coupled N=4 super-Yang-Mills (SYM) plasmas, depending on the virtuality of the source of the "jet." In this paper, we identify the nature of this breakdown: High-momentum gravitons in the gravitational dual get stretched into relatively large classical string loops by tidal forces associated with the black brane. These stringy excitations of the graviton are not contained in the supergravity approximation, but we show that the jet stopping problem can nonetheless still be solved by drawing on various string-theory methods (the eikonal approximation, the Penrose limit, string quantization in pp-wave backgrounds) to obtain a probability distribution for the late-time classical string loops. In extreme cases, we find that the gravitons are stretched into very long folded strings which are qualitatively similar to the folded classical strings originally used by Gubser, Gulotta, Pufu and Rocha to model the jet stopping problem. This makes a connection in certain cases between the different methods that have been used to study jet stopping with AdS/CFT and gives a specific example of a precise N=4 SYM problem that generates such strings in the gravity description.

Coupling dependence of jet quenching in hot strongly-coupled gauge theories

Previous top-down studies of jet stopping in strongly-coupled QCD-like plasmas with gravity duals have been in the infinite 't Hooft coupling limit lambda -> infinity. They have found that, though a wide range of jet stopping distances are possible depending on initial conditions, the maximum jet stopping distance l_max scales with energy as E^(1/3) at large energy. But it has always been unclear whether the large-coupling and high-energy limits commute. In this paper, we use the string alpha' expansion in AdS-CFT to study the corrections to the lambda=infinity result in powers of 1/lambda. For the particular type of "jets" that we study, we find that (i) the naive expansion in 1/lambda breaks down for certain initial conditions but (ii) the relative corrections to the maximum stopping distance are small when 1/lambda is small. More specifically, we find that the expansion in 1/lambda is well behaved for jets whose stopping distance l_stop is in the range lambda^(-1/6) l_max << l_stop <~ l_max, but the expansion breaks down (and the fate of lambda=infinity results is uncertain) for jets created in such a way that l_stop << lambda^(-1/6) l_max. The analysis requires assessing the effects of all higher-derivative corrections to the supergravity action for the gravity dual.

On the 3-point functions of Aging Dynamics and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

Aging can be realized as a sub-algebra of Schrödinger algebra by discarding the time-translation generator. While the 2-point functions of the Age algebra have been known for some time, little else was known about the higher $n$-point correlators. In this letter we present novel 3-point correlators of scalar primary operators. We find that the Aging correlators are distinct from the Schrödinger correlators by more than certain dressings with time-dependent factors, as was the case with 2-point functions. In the existing literature, the holographic geometry of Aging is obtained by performing certain general coordinate transformations on the holographic dual of the Schrödinger theory. Consequently, the Aging 2-point functions derived from holography look as the Schrödinger 2-point functions dressed by time-dependent factors. However, since the 3-point functions obtained in this letter are not merely dressed Schrödinger correlators and instead depend on an additional time-translation breaking variable, we conclude that the most general holographic realization of Aging is yet to be found.

4-point correlators in finite-temperature AdS/CFT: jet quenching correlations

There has been recent progress on computing real-time equilibrium 3-point functions in finite-temperature strongly-coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM). In this paper, we show an example of how to carry out a similar analysis for a 4-point function. We look at the stopping of high-energy "jets" in such strongly-coupled plasmas and relate the question of whether, on an event-by-event basis, each jet deposits its net charge over a narrow (~ 1/T) or wide (>> 1/T) spatial region. We relate this question to the calculation of a 4-point equilibrium correlator.

Jet quenching in hot strongly coupled gauge theories simplified

Theoretical studies of jet stopping in strongly-coupled QCD-like plasmas have used gauge-gravity duality to find that the maximum stopping distance scales like E^{1/3} for large jet energies E. In recent work studying jets that are created by finite-size sources in the gauge theory, we found an additional scale: the typical (as opposed to maximum) jet stopping distance scales like (EL)^{1/4}, where L is the size of the space-time region where the jet is created. In this paper, we show that the results of our previous, somewhat involved computation in the gravity dual, and the (EL)^{1/4} scale in particular, can be very easily reproduced and understood in terms of the distance that high-energy particles travel in AdS_5-Schwarzschild space before falling into the black brane. We also investigate how stopping distances depend on the conformal dimension of the source operator used to create the jet.

Second order hydrodynamic coefficients from 3-point stress tensor correlators via AdS/CFT

We study second order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics in 4-dimensional conformal field theories. We derive Kubo-type relations for second order hydrodynamic coefficients in terms of 3-point stress tensor retarded correlators. For N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling and at finite temperature we compute these stress tensor 3-point correlators, using AdS/CFT, by evaluating real-time cubic Witten diagrams in the AdS-Schwarzschild background. The small momentum expansion of the 3-point correlators in terms of first and second order hydrodynamic coefficients is matched with the AdS result. We arrive at the same expressions for the hydrodynamic coefficients which multiply terms quadratic in the shear and vorticity tensors in the hydrodynamic expansion of the stress tensor as did Bhattacharyya, Hubeny, Minwalla and Rangamani \cite{Bhattacharyya:2008jc}. Our method extends the results of Baier et al \cite{Baier:2007ix}, and allows for a unified treatment of hydrodynamic coefficients, which are extracted from 2-, and now, 3-point retarded stress tensor correlators in the AdS-Schwarzschild background.

Some new results for "jet" stopping in AdS/CFT

We give a breezy, qualitative overview of some of our recent results on studying jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas using gauge-gravity duality. Previously, people have found that the maximum stopping distance in such plasmas scales with energy as E^{1/3}. We show that there is an important distinction between typical and maximum stopping distances. For the strongly-coupled excitations that we study, we find that the typical stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/4}.

Constraints and Generalized Gauge Transformations on Tree-Level Gluon and Graviton Amplitudes

Writing the fully color dressed and graviton amplitudes, respectively, as ${\bf A}=<C|A> =<C|M|N> $ and ${\bf A}_{gr}= <\tilde N|M|N> $, where $|A> $ is a set of Kleiss-Kuijf color-ordered basis, $|N>, $|\tilde N> $ and $|C>$ are the similarly ordered numerators and color coefficients, we show that the propagator matrix $M$ has $(n-3)(n-3)!$ independent eigenvectors $|λ^0_j>$ with zero eigenvalue, for $n$-particle processes. The resulting equations $<λ^0_j|A> = 0$ are relations among the color ordered amplitudes. The freedom to shift $|N> \to |N> +\sum_j f_j|λ^0_j>$ and similarly for $|\tilde N>$, where $f_j$ are $(n-3)(n-3)!$ arbitrary functions, encodes generalized gauge transformations. They yield both BCJ amplitude and KLT relations, when such freedom is accounted for. Furthermore, $f_j$ can be promoted to the role of effective Lagrangian vertices in the field operator space.

Holographic real-time non-relativistic correlators at zero and finite temperature

We compute a variety of two and three-point real-time correlation functions for a strongly-coupled non-relativistic field theory. We focus on the theory conjectured to be dual to the Schrödinger-invariant gravitational spacetime introduced by Balasubramanian, McGreevy, and Son, but our methods apply to a large class of non-relativistic theories. At zero temperature, we obtain time-ordered, retarded, and Wightman non-relativistic correlators for scalar operators of arbitrary conformal dimension directly in field theory by applying a certain lightlike Fourier transform to relativistic conformal correlators, and we verify that non-relativistic AdS/CFT reproduces the results. We compute thermal two and three-point real-time correlators for scalar operators dual to scalar fields in the black hole background which is the finite temperature generalization of the Schrödinger spacetime. This is done by first identifying thermal real-time bulk-to-boundary propagators, which combined with Veltman's circling rules, yield two and three-point correlators. The two-point correlators we obtain satisfy the Kallen-Lehmann relations. We also give retarded and time-ordered three-point correlators.

Jet quenching in hot strongly coupled gauge theories revisited: 3-point correlators with gauge-gravity duality

Previous studies of high-energy jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas have lacked a clear gauge-theory specification of the initial state. We show how to set up a well-defined gauge theory problem to study jet stopping in pure {\cal N}=4 super Yang Mills theory (somewhat analogous to Hofman and Maldacena's studies at zero temperature) and solve it by using gauge-gravity duality for real-time, finite-temperature 3-point correlators. Previous studies have found that the stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/3} (with disagreement on the gauge coupling dependence). We do find that none of the jet survives beyond this scale, but we find that almost all of our jet stops at a parametrically smaller scale proportional to (E L)^{1/4}, where L is the size of the space-time region where the jet is initially created.

Massive quark scattering at strong coupling from AdS/CFT

We extend the analysis of Alday and Maldacena for obtaining gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling to include external massive quark states. Our quarks are actually the N=2 hypermultiplets which arise when D7-brane probes are included in the AdS_5 x S^5 geometry. We work in the quenched approximation, treating the N=2 matter multiplets as external sources coupled to the N=4 SYM fields. We first derive appropriate massive-particle boundary conditions for the string scattering worldsheets. We then find an exact worldsheet which corresponds to the scattering of two massive quarks and two massless gluons and extract from this the associated scattering amplitude. We also find the worldsheet and amplitude for the scattering of four massive quarks. Our worldsheet solutions reduce to the four massless gluon solution of Alday and Maldacena in the limit of zero quark mass. The amplitudes we compute can also be interpreted in terms of 2-2 scattering involving gluons and massive W-bosons.

Real-time finite-temperature correlators from AdS/CFT

In this paper we use AdS/CFT ideas in conjunction with insights from finite temperature real-time field theory formalism to compute 3-point correlators of ${\cal N}{=}4$ super Yang-Mills operators, in real time and at finite temperature. To this end, we propose that the gravity field action is integrated only over the right and left quadrants of the Penrose diagram of the Anti de Sitter-Schwarzschild background, with a relative sign between the two terms. For concreteness we consider the case of a scalar field in the black hole background. Using the scalar field Schwinger-Keldysh bulk-to-boundary propagators, we give the general expression of a 3-point real-time Green's correlator. We then note that this particular prescription amounts to adapting the finite-temperature analog of Veltman's circling rules to tree-level Witten diagrams, and comment on the retarded and Feynman scalar bulk-to-boundary propagators. We subject our prescription to several checks: KMS identities, the largest time equation and the zero-temperature limit. When specializing to a particular retarded (causal) 3-point function, we find a very simple answer: the momentum-space correlator is given by three causal (two retarded and one advanced) bulk-to-boundary propagators, meeting at a vertex point which is integrated from spatial infinity to the horizon only. This result is expected based on analyticity, since the retarded n-point functions are obtained by analytic continuation from the imaginary time Green's function, and based on causality considerations.

All 4-dimensional static, spherically symmetric, 2-charge abelian Kaluza-Klein black holes and their CFT duals

We derive the dual CFT Virasoro algebras from the algebra of conserved diffeomorphism charges, for a large class of abelian Kaluza-Klein black holes. Under certain conditions, such as non-vanishing electric and magnetic monopole charges, the Kaluza-Klein black holes have a Reissner-Nordstrom space-time structure. For the non-extremal charged Kaluza-Klein black holes, we use the uplifted 6d pure gravity solutions to construct a set of Killing horizon preserving diffeomorphisms. For the (non-supersymmetric) extremal black holes, we take the NENH limit, and construct a one-parameter family of diffeomorphisms which preserve the Hamiltonian constraints at spatial infinity. In each case we evaluate the algebra of conserved diffeomorphism charges following Barnich, Brandt and Compere, who used a cohomological approach, and Silva, who employed a covariant-Lagrangian formalism. At the Killing horizon, it is only Silva's algebra which acquires a central charge extension, and which enables us to recover the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy from the Cardy formula. For the NENH geometry, the extremal black hole entropy is obtained only when the free parameter of the diffeomorphism generating vector fields is chosen such that the central terms of the two algebras are in agreement.

Condensing Momentum Modes in 2-d 0A String Theory with Flux

We use a combination of conformal perturbation theory techniques and matrix model results to study the effects of perturbing by momentum modes two dimensional type 0A strings with non-vanishing Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux. In the limit of large RR flux (equivalently, mu=0) we find an explicit analytic form of the genus zero partition function in terms of the RR flux $q$ and the momentum modes coupling constant alpha. The analyticity of the partition function enables us to go beyond the perturbative regime and, for alpha>> q, obtain the partition function in a background corresponding to the momentum modes condensation. For momenta such that 0<p<2 we find no obstruction to condensing the momentum modes in the phase diagram of the partition function.

R^4 Corrections to Heterotic M-theory

We study R^4 corrections in heterotic M-theory. We derive to order kappa^{4/3} the induced modification to the Kahler potential of the universal moduli and its implications for the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The soft scalar field masses still remain small for breaking in the T-modulus direction. We investigate the deformations of the background geometry due to the R^4 term. The warp-factor deformation of the background M_4 x CY(3) x S^1/Z_2 can no longer be integrated to a fully non-linear solution, unlike when neglecting higher derivative corrections. We find explicit solutions to order kappa^{4/3} and, in particular, find the expected shift of the Calabi-Yau volume by a constant proportional to the Euler number. We also study the effect induced by the R^4 terms on the de Sitter vacua found previously by balancing two non-perturbative contributions to the superpotential, namely open membrane instantons and gaugino condensation. To order kappa^{4/3} all induced corrections are proportional to the Euler number of the Calabi-Yau three-fold.

Bubbling 1/2 BPS solutions of minimal six-dimensional supergravity

We continue our previous analysis (hep-th/0412045) of 1/2 BPS solutions to minimal 6d supergravity of bubbling form. We show that, by turning on an axion field in the T^2 torus reduction, the constraint F \wedge F, present in the case of an S^1 x S^1 reduction, is relaxed. We prove that the four-dimensional reduction to a bosonic field theory, whose content is the metric, a gauge field, two scalars and a pseudo-scalar (the axion), is consistent. Moreover, these reductions when lifted to the six-dimensional minimal supergravity represent the sought-after family of 1/2 BPS bubbling solutions.

Regge Trajectories Revisited in the Gauge/String Correspondence

We attempt to obtain realistic glueball Regge trajectories from the gauge/string correspondence. To this end we study closed spinning string configurations in two supergravity backgrounds: Klebanov-Strassler (KS) and Maldacena-Nunez (MN) which are dual to confining gauge theories. These backgrounds represent two embeddings of N=1 SYM, in the large rank limit, in string theory. The classical configuration we consider is that of a folded closed string spinning in a supergravity region with vanishing transverse radius (τ= 0) which is dual to the IR of the gauge theory. Classically, a spinning string yields a linear Regge trajectory with zero intercept. By performing a semi-classical analysis we find that quantum effects alter both the linearity of the trajectory and the vanishing classical intercept: J:=α(t)= α_0 + α' t +β\sqrt{t}. Two features of our Regge trajectories are compatible with the experimental Pomeron trajectory: positive intercept and positive curvature. The fact that both KS and MN string backgrounds give the same functional expression of the Regge trajectories suggests that in fact we are observing string states dual to N=1 SYM.

On the nonlinear KK reductions on spheres of supergravity theories

We address some issues related to the construction of general Kaluza-Klein (KK) ansätze for the compactification of a supergravity (sugra) theory on a sphere $S_m$. We first reproduce various ansätze for compactification to 7d from the ansatz for the full nonlinear KK reduction of 11d sugra on $AdS_7\times S_4$. As a side result, we obtain a lagrangian formulation of 7d ${\cal N}=2$ gauged sugra, which so far had only a on-shell formulation, through field equations and constraints. The $AdS_7\times S_4$ ansatz generalizes therefore all previous sphere compactifications to 7d. Then we consider the case when the scalars in the lower dimensional theory are in a coset $Sl(m+1)/SO(m+1)$, and we keep the maximal gauge group $SO(m+1)$. The 11-dimensional sugra truncated on $S_4$ fits precisely the case under consideration, and serves as a model for our construction. We find that the metric ansatz has a universal expression, with the internal space deformed by the scalar fluctuations to a conformally rescaled ellipsoid. We also find the ansatz for the dependence of the antisymmetric tensor on the scalars. We comment on the fermionic ansatz, which will contain a matrix $U$ interpolating between the spinorial $SO(m+1)$ indices of the spherical harmonics and the $R$-symmetry indices of the fermionic fields in the lower dimensional sugra theory. We derive general conditions which the matrix $U$ has to satisfy and we give a formula for the vielbein in terms of $U$. As an application of our methods we obtain the full ansatz for the metric and vielbein for 10d sugra on $AdS_5\times S_5$ (with no restriction on any fields).

Supersymmetries and constants of motion in Taub-NUT spinning space

We review the geodesic motion of pseudo-classical spinning particles in curved spaces. Investigating the generalized Killing equations for spinning spaces, we express the constants of motion in terms of Killing-Yano tensors. The general results are applied to the case of the four-dimensional Euclidean Taub-NUT spinning space. A simple exact solution, corresponding to trajectories lying on a cone, is given.
