Effective numerical computation of $p(x)-$Laplace equations in 2D

In this article we implement a method for the computation of a nonlinear elliptic problem with nonstandard growth driven by the $p(x)-$Laplacian operator. Our implementation is based in the {\em decomposition--coordination} method that allows us, via an iterative process, to solve in each step a linear differential equation and a nonlinear algebraic equation. Our code is implemented in {\sc MatLab} in 2 dimensions and turns out to be extremely efficient from the computational point of view.

On a three dimensional Compton scattering tomography system with fixed source

Compton scatter tomography is an emerging technique with attractive applications in several fields in imaging such as non-destructive testing and medical scanning. In this paper, we introduce a novel modality in three dimensions with a fixed source and a single detector that moves on a spherical surface. We also study the Radon transform modeling the data that consists in integrals on toric surfaces. Using spherical harmonics we arrive to a generalized Abel s type equation connecting the coefficients of the expansion of the data with those of the function. We show the uniqueness of its solution and so the invertibility of the toric Radon transform. We illustrate this through numerical reconstructions in three dimensions using Tikhonov regularization. A preliminary version of the algorithm for discrete spherical harmonic expansion is available in a public code repository.

Optimal Estimation of Thermal Diffusivity in an Energy Transfer Problem

This work focuses on determining the coefficient of thermal diffusivity in a one-dimensional heat transfer process along a homogeneous and isotropic bar, embedded in a moving fluid with heat generation. A first type (Dirichlet) condition is imposed on one boundary and a third type (Robin) condition is considered at the other one. The parameter is estimated by minimizing the squared errors where noisy observations are numerically simulated at different positions and instants. The results are evaluated by means of the relative errors for different levels of noise. In order to enhance the estimation performance, an optimal design technique is chosen to select the most informative data. Finally, the improvement of the estimate is discussed when an optimal design is used.

Data preprocessing for parameter estimation. An application to a reactive bimolecular transport model

In this work we are concerned with the inverse problem of the estimation of modeling parameters for a reactive bimolecular transport based on experimental data that is non-uniformly distributed along the interval where the process takes place. We proposed a methodology that can help to determine the intervals where most of the data should be taken in order to obtain a good estimation of the parameters. For the purpose of reducing the cost of laboratory experiments, we propose to simulate data where is needed and it is not available, a PreProcesing Data Fitting (PPDF).We applied this strategy on the estimation of parameters for an advection-diffusion-reaction problem in a porous media. Each step is explained in detail and simulation results are shown and compared with previous ones.
