Hopf type theorems in Riemannian manifolds

In 1951, H. Hopf proved that the only surfaces, homeomorphic to the sphere, with constant mean curvature in the Euclidean space are the round (geometrical) spheres. In this paper we survey some contributions of Renato Tribuzy to generalize the result of Hopf as well as some recent results of the authors using these techniques for shrinking solitons of curvature flows and for surfaces in three-dimensional warped product manifolds, specially the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds.

Stability properties of complete self-shrinking surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$

This paper studies rigidity for immersed self-shrinkers of the mean curvature flow of surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3.$ We prove that an immersed self-shrinker with finite $L$-index must be proper and of finite topology. As one of consequences, there is no stable two-dimensional self-shrinker in $\mathbb{R}^3$ without assuming properness. We conclude the paper by giving an affirmative answer to a question of Mantegazza.

Hopf type theorems for self-similar solutions of curvature flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$

In this paper we prove rigidity results for two-dimensional, closed, immersed, non-necessarily convex, self-similar solutions of a wide class of fully non-linear parabolic flows in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We show this self-similar solutions are the round spheres centered at the origin provided it has genus zero and satisfies a suitable upper pinching estimate for the Gaussian curvature. As applications, we obtain rigidity results for the round sphere as the only closed, immersed, genus zero, self-similar solution of several well known flows, as the flow of the powers of mean curvature, the harmonic mean curvature flow and the $α$-Gaussian curvature flow for $α\in(0,1/4)$. We remark that our result does not assume any embeddedness condition.

Volume growth estimates for Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds

In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at most exponential volume growth.

Uniqueness of grim hyperplanes for mean curvature flows

In this paper we show that an immersed nontrivial translating soliton for mean curvature flow in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$($n=2,3)$ is a grim hyperplane if and only if it is mean convex and has weighted total extrinsic curvature of at most quadratic growth. For an embedded translating soliton $Σ$ with nonnegative scalar curvature, we prove that if the mean curvature of $Σ$ does not change signs on each end, then $Σ$ must have positive scalar curvature unless it is either a hyperplane or a grim hyperplane.

Eigenvalues of the drifted Laplacian on complete metric measure spaces

I In this paper, first we study a complete smooth metric measure space $(M^n,g, e^{-f}dv)$ with the ($\infty$)-Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature $\textrm{Ric}_f\ge \frac a2g$ for some positive constant $a$. It is known that the spectrum of the drifted Laplacian $Δ_f$ for $M$ is discrete and the first nonzero eigenvalue of $Δ_f$ has lower bound $\frac a2$. We prove that if the lower bound $\frac a2$ is achieved with multiplicity $k\geq 1$, then $k\leq n$, $M$ is isometric to $Σ^{n-k}\times \mathbb{R}^k$ for some complete $(n-k)$-dimensional manifold $Σ$ and by passing an isometry, $(M^n,g, e^{-f}dv)$ must split off a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton $(\mathbb{R}^k, g_{can}, \frac{a}{4}|t|^2)$, $t\in \mathbb{R}^k$. This result has an application to gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Secondly, we study the drifted Laplacian $\mathcal{L}$ for properly immersed self-shrinkers in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+p}$, $p\geq1$ and show the discreteness of the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}$ and a logarithmic Sobolev inequality.

Simons' type equation for $f$-minimal hypersurfaces and applications

We derive the Simons' type equation for $f$-minimal hypersurfaces in weighted Riemannian manifolds and apply it to obtain a pinching theorem for closed $f$-minimal hypersurfaces immersed in the product manifold $\mathbb{S}^n(\sqrt{2(n-1)})\times \mathbb{R}$ with $f=\frac {t^2}{4}$. Also we classify closed $f$-minimal hypersurfaces with $L_f$-index one immersed in $\mathbb{S}^n(\sqrt{2(n-1)})\times \mathbb{R}$ with the same $f$ as above.

Stability properties and gap theorem for complete $f$-minimal hypersurfaces

In this paper, we study complete oriented $f$-minimal hypersurfaces properly immersed in a cylinder shrinking soliton $(\mathbb{S}^n\times \mathbb{R}, \bar{g}, f)$. We prove that such hypersurface with $L_f$-index one must be either $\mathbb{S}^n\times\{0\}$ or $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R}$, where $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ denotes the sphere in $\mathbb{S}^{n}$ of the same radius. Also we prove a pinching theorem for them.

Eigenvalue estimate and compactness for closed $f$-minimal surfaces

Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain with convex boundary in a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove a lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the weighted Laplacian for closed embedded $f$-minimal hypersurfaces contained in $Ω$. Using this estimate, we prove a compactness theorem for the space of closed embedded $f$-minimal surfaces with the uniform upper bounds of genus and diameter in a complete $3$-manifold with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant and admitting an exhaustion by bounded domains with convex boundary.

Rigidity for nearly umbilical hypersurfaces in space forms

Perez proved some $L^2$ inequalities for closed convex hypersurfaces immersed in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, more generally, for closed hypersurfaces with non-negative Ricci curvature, immersed in an Einstein manifold. In this paper, we discuss the rigidity of these inequalities when the ambient manifold is $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$, or the closed hemisphere $\mathbb{S}_+^{n+1}$. We also obtain a generalization of the Perez's theorem to the hypersurfaces without the hypothesis of non-negative Ricci curvature.

Stability and compactness for complete $f$-minimal surfaces

Let $(M,\bar{g}, e^{-f}dμ)$ be a complete metric measure space with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below by a positive constant. We prove that, in $M$, there is no complete two-sided $L_f$-stable immersed $f$-minimal hypersurface with finite weighted volume. Further, if $M$ is a 3-manifold, we prove a smooth compactness theorem for the space of complete embedded $f$-minimal surfaces in $M$ with the uniform upper bounds of genus and weighted volume, which generalizes the compactness theorem for complete self-shrinkers in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by Colding-Minicozzi.

Volume estimate about shrinkers

We derive a precise estimate on the volume growth of the level set of a potential function on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. As applications, we obtain the volume growth rate of a complete noncompact self-shrinker and a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. We also prove the equivalence of weighted volume finiteness, polynomial volume growth and properness of an immersed self-shrinker in Euclidean space.

On complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons

In this paper we derive a precise estimate on the growth of potential functions of complete noncompact shrinking solitons. Based on this, we prove that a complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton has at most Euclidean volume growth. The latter result can be viewed as an analog of the well-known theorem of Bishop that a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature has at most Euclidean volume growth.

Spectrum of the Laplacian on Quaternionic Kahler Manifolds

Let $M^{4n}$ be a complete quaternionic Kähler manifold with scalar curvature bounded below by $-16n(n+2)$. We get a sharp estimate for the first eigenvalue $λ_1(M)$ of the Laplacian which is $λ_1(M)\le (2n+1)^2$. If the equality holds, then either $M$ has only one end, or $M$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}\times N$ with N given by a compact manifold. Moreover, if $M$ is of bounded curvature, $M$ is covered by the quaterionic hyperbolic space $\mathbb{QH}^n$ and $N$ is a compact quotient of the generalized Heisenberg group. When $λ_1(M)\ge \frac{8(n+2)}3$, we also prove that $M$ must have only one end with infinite volume.
