Composite dynamics in Sp($2N$) gauge theories

Sp($2N$) gauge theories with fermonic matter provide an ideal laboratory to build extensions of the standard model based on novel composite dynamics. Examples include composite Higgs along with top partial compositeness and composite dark matter. Without fermions, their study also complements those based on SU($N_c$) gauge theories with which they share a common sector in the large $N_c=2N$ limit. We report on our recent progress in the numerical studies of Sp($2N$) gauge theories discretised on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In particular, we present preliminary results for the low-lying mass spectra of mesons and chimera baryons in the theories with $N=2$. We also compute the topological susceptibility for various values of $N$, extrapolate the results to the large $N$ limit, and discuss certain universal properties in Yang-Mills theories.

Lattice studies of the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with two fundamental and three antisymmetric Dirac fermions

We consider the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f=2$ fundamental and $n_f=3$ antisymmetric flavours of Dirac fermions in four dimensions. This theory serves as the microscopic origin for composite Higgs models with $SU(4)/Sp(4)$ coset, supplemented by partial top compositeness. We study numerically its lattice realisation, and couple the fundamental plaquette action to Wilson-Dirac fermions in mixed representations, by adopting a (rational) hybrid Monte Carlo method, to perform non-trivial tests of the properties of the resulting lattice theory. We find evidence of a surface (with boundaries) of first-order bulk phase transitions in the three-dimensional space of bare parameters (one coupling and two masses). Explicit evaluation of the Dirac eigenvalues confirms the expected patterns of global symmetry breaking. After investigating finite volume effects in the weak-coupling phase of the theory, for the largest available lattice we study the mass spectra of the lightest spin-0 and spin-1 flavoured mesons composed of fermions in each representation, and of the lightest half-integer spin composite particle made of fermions in different representations -- the chimera baryon. This work sets the stage for future systematical studies of the non-perturbative dynamics in phenomenologically relevant regions of parameter space.

The effects of magnetic fields on magnetic dipole moments

We calculate the effect of magnetic fields on the magnetic dipole moment of leptons up to the quadratic order in the magnetic field, including the QCD contributions. Since the leading contribution, which is linear in the magnetic field, depends on the spin, its effect is not measurable directly in the Penning trap experiment for the electron dipole moment. In the muon anomaly, however, we find that the electrons decayed from muons are refracted linearly in the magnetic field. This effect, though quite small, changes the distribution of the detected electrons in the muon $g-2$ experiment and could be measurable, improving the experimental uncertainties. We also discuss the general field-dependent form factors and the Ward-Takahashi identity under the external magnetic fields.

Sp(4) gauge theories and beyond the standard model physics

We review numerical results for models with gauge group Sp(2N), discussing the glueball spectrum in the large-N limit, the quenched meson spectrum of Sp(4) with Dirac fermions in the fundamental and in the antisymmetric representation and the Sp(4) gauge model with two dynamical Dirac flavours. We also present preliminary results for the meson spectrum in the Sp(4) gauge theory with two fundamental and three antisymmetric Dirac flavours. The main motivation of our programme is to test whether this latter model is viable as a realisation of Higgs compositeness via the pseudo Nambu Goldstone mechanism and at the same time can provide partial top compositeness. In this respect, we report and briefly discuss preliminary results for the mass of the composite baryon made with two fundamental and one antisymmetric fermion (chimera baryon), whose physical properties are highly constrained if partial top compositeness is at work. Our investigation shows that a fully non-perturbative study of Higgs compositeness and partial top compositeness in Sp(4) is within reach with our current lattice methodology.

Color dependence of tensor and scalar glueball masses in Yang-Mills theories

We report the masses of the lightest spin-0 and spin-2 glueballs obtained in an extensive lattice study of the continuum and infinite volume limits of $Sp(N_c)$ gauge theories for $N_c=2,4,6,8$. We also extrapolate the combined results towards the large-$N_c$ limit. We compute the ratio of scalar and tensor masses, and observe evidence that this ratio is independent of $N_{c}$. Other lattice studies of Yang-Mills theories at the same space-time dimension provide a compatible ratio. We further compare these results to various analytical ones and discuss them in view of symmetry-based arguments related to the breaking of scale invariance in the underlying dynamics, showing that a constant ratio might emerge in a scenario in which the $0^{++}$ glueball is interpreted as a dilaton state.

Into the conformal window: multi-representation gauge theories

We investigate the conformal window of four-dimensional gauge theories with fermionic matter fields in multiple representations. Of particularly relevant examples are the ultra-violet complete models with fermions in two distinct representations considered in the context of composite Higgs and top partial-compositeness. We first discuss various analytical approaches to unveil the lower edge of the conformal window and their extension to the multiple matter representations. In particular, we argue that the scheme-independent series expansion for the anomalous dimension of a fermion bilinear at an infrared fixed point, $γ_{\barχχ,\,{\rm IR}}$, combined with the conjectured critical condition, $γ_{\barχχ,\,{\rm IR}} = 1$ or equivalently $γ_{\barχχ,\,{\rm IR}} (2-γ_{\barχχ,\,{\rm IR}})=1$, can be used to determine the boundary of conformal phase transition on fully physical grounds. In illustrative cases of $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ theories with $N_R$ Dirac fermions in various representations, we assess our results by comparing to other analytical or lattice results.

Reinterpretation of LHC Results for New Physics: Status and Recommendations after Run 2

We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data.

Sp(4) gauge theories on the lattice: Quenched fundamental and antisymmetric fermions

We perform lattice studies of meson mass spectra and decay constants of the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory in the quenched approximation. We consider two species of (Dirac) fermions as matter field content, transforming in the 2-index antisymmetric and the fundamental representation of the gauge group, respectively. All matter fields are formulated as Wilson fermions. We extrapolate to the continuum and massless limits, and compare to each other the results obtained for the two species of mesons. In the case of two fundamental and three antisymmetric fermions, the long-distance dynamics is relevant for composite Higgs models. This is the first lattice study of this class of theories. The global $SU(4) \times SU(6)$ symmetry is broken to the $Sp(4) \times SO(6)$ subgroup, and the condensates align with the explicit mass terms present in the lattice formulation of the theory. The main results of our quenched calculations are that, with fermions in the 2-index antisymmetric representation of the group, the masses squared and decay constant squared of all the mesons we considered are larger than the corresponding quantities for the fundamental representation, by factors that vary between $\sim$1.2 and $\sim$2.7. We also present technical results that will be useful for future lattice investigations of dynamical simulations, of composite chimera baryons, and of the approach to large $N$ in the $Sp(2N)$ theories considered. We briefly discuss their high-temperature behaviour, where symmetry restoration and enhancement are expected.

Sp(4) gauge theories on the lattice: $N_f=2$ dynamical fundamental fermions

We perform lattice studies of the gauge theory with Sp(4) gauge group and two flavours of (Dirac) fundamental matter. The global SU(4) symmetry is spontaneously broken by the fermion condensate. The dynamical Wilson fermions in the lattice action introduce a mass that breaks the global symmetry also explicitly. The resulting pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons describe the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset, and are relevant, in the context of physics beyond the Standard Model, for composite Higgs models. We discuss scale setting, continuum extrapolation and finite volume effects in the lattice theory. We study mesonic composite states, which span representations of the unbroken Sp(4) global symmetry, and we measure masses and decay constants of the (flavoured) spin-0 and spin-1 states accessible to the numerical treatment, as a function of the fermion mass. With help from the effective field theory treatment of such mesons, we perform a first extrapolation towards the massless limit. We assess our results by critically comparing to the literature on other models and to the quenched results, and we conclude by outlining future avenues for further exploration. The results of our spectroscopic analysis provide new input data for future phenomenological studies in the contexts of composite Higgs models, and of dark matter models with a strongly coupled dynamical origin.

Sp(4) gauge theory on the lattice: towards SU(4)/Sp(4) composite Higgs (and beyond)

The Sp(4) gauge theory with two Dirac fundamental flavours provides a candidate for the microscopic origin of composite-Higgs models based on the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset. We employ a combination of two different, complementary strategies for the numerical lattice calculations, based on the Hybrid Monte Carlo and on the Heat Bath algorithms. We perform pure Yang-Mills, quenched computations and exploratory studies with dynamical Wilson fermions. We present the first results in the literature for the spectrum of glueballs of the pure Sp(4) Yang-Mills theory, an EFT framework for the interpretation of the masses and decay constants of the lightest pion, vector and axial-vector mesons, and a preliminary calculation of the latter in the quenched approximation. We show the first numerical evidence of a bulk phase transition in the lattice theory with dynamical Wilson fermions, and perform the technical steps necessary to set up future investigations of the mesonic spectrum of the full theory.

Composite (pseudo) scalar contributions to muon g-2

We have calculated the composite (pseudo) scalar contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of muons in models of walking technicolor. By the axial or scale anomaly the light scalars such as techni-dilaton, techni-pions or techni-eta have anomalous couplings to two-photons, which make them natural candidates for the recent 750 GeV resonance excess, observed at LHC. Due to the anomalous couplings, their contributions to muon (g-2) are less suppressed and might explain the current deviation in muon (g-2) measurements from theory.

Holographic Estimate of Electromagnetic Mass

Using the gauge/gravity duality, we calculate the electromagnetic contributions to hadron masses, where mass generates dynamically by strong QCD interactions. Based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD we find that the electromagnetic mass of proton is $0.48~{\rm MeV}$ larger than that of neutron, which is in agreement with recent lattice results. Similarly for pions we obtain $m_{π^{\pm}}-m_{π^0}=1.8~{\rm MeV}$, roughly half of the experimental value. The electromagnetic mass of pions is found to be independent of $N_c$ and 't Hooft coupling and its scale is set only by the Kaluza-Klein scale of the model, $M_{\rm KK}=949~{\rm MeV}$.

Analysis of techni-dilaton as a dark matter candidate

The almost conformal dynamics of walking technicolor (TC) implies the existence of the approximate scale invariance, which breaks down spontaneously by the condensation of anti-techni and techni-fermions. According to the Goldstone theorem, a spinless, parity-even particle, called techni-dilaton (TD), then emerges at low energy. If TC exhibits an extreme walking, TD mass is parametrically much smaller than that of techni-fermions (around 1 TeV), while its decay constant is comparable to the cutoff scale of walking TC. We analyze the light, decoupled TD as a dark matter candidate and study cosmological productions of TD, both thermal and non-thermal, in the early Universe. The thermal population is governed dominantly by single TD production processes involving vertices breaking the scale symmetry, while the non-thermal population is by the vacuum misalignment and is accumulated via harmonic and coherent oscillations of misaligned classical TD fields. The non-thermal population turns out to be dominant and large enough to explain the abundance of presently observed dark matter, while the thermal population is highly suppressed due to the large TD decay constant. Several cosmological and astrophysical limits on the light, decoupled TD are examined to find that the TD mass is constrained to be in a range between 0.01 eV and 500 eV. From the combined constraints on cosmological productions and astrophysical observations, we find that the light, decoupled TD can be a good dark matter candidate with the mass around a few hundreds of eV for typical models of (extreme) walking TC. We finally mention possible designated experiments to detect the TD dark matter.

Techni-dilaton as Dark Matter

We propose a new dark matter candidate, {\it light decoupled techni-dilaton}, which arises from the almost scale-invariant/conformal (walking) technicolor. We investigate its characteristic nature and discuss several cosmological and astrophysical constraints. It turns out that techni-dilatons are extremely weakly interacting and produced dominantly by the non-thermal mechanism to be the main component of dark matter with mass range between around 0.01 eV and 500 eV for typical walking technicolor scenarios.

Anomalous currents in dense matter under a magnetic field

We consider fermionic dense matter under a magnetic field, where fermions couple minimally to gauge fields, and calculate anomalous currents at one loop. We find anomalous currents are spontaneously generated along the magnetic field but fermions only in the lowest Landau level contribute to anomalous currents. We then show that there are no more corrections to the anomalous currents from two or higher loops.

Holographic aspects of three dimensional QCD from string theory

We study two aspects of 3D QCD with massless fermions in a holographic set-up from string theory, based on D3/D7 branes; parity anomaly and baryons as baby Skyrmions. We first give a novel account of parity anomaly of 3D QCD with odd number of flavors from the IR holographic viewpoint by observing a subtle point in D7 brane embeddings with a given fixed UV theory. We also discuss its UV origin in terms of weakly coupled D-brane pictures. We then focus on the parity-symmetric case of even number of N_F flavors, and study baryons in the holographic model. We identify the monopoles of U(N_F) gauge theory dynamically broken down to U(N_F/2)x U(N_F/2) in the holographic 4 dimensional bulk as a holographic counter-part of 3D baby-Skyrmions for baryons in large N limit, and work out some details how the mapping goes. In particular, we show that the correct baryon charges emerge from the Witten effect with a space-varying theta angle.

Holographic calculation of hadronic contributions to muon g-2

Using the gauge/gravity duality, we compute the leading order hadronic (HLO) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of muon, amu(HLO). Holographic renormalization is used to obtain a finite vacuum polarization. We find amu(HLO) =470.5 x 10^{-10} in AdS/QCD with two light flavors, which is compared with the currently revised BABAR data estimated from e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^- events, amu(HLO)[pipi]=(514.1 +- 3.8) x 10^{-10}.

Quark Mass Dependence of Hadron Spectrum in Holographic QCD

We compute a shift of baryon mass spectra due to quark masses in perturbation, in Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. We find the shift for the ground state nucleons to be δM = 4.1 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}], which is consistent with the current lattice QCD result. We predict the same value of the shift for N(1535) and Delta, while a larger value 7.7 m_π^2 [GeV^{-1}] for Roper N(1440). We also present some evidences that the shifts of the vector meson masses are suppressed in the large 't Hooft coupling limit.

Light Scalar Decay in Diquark Chiral Effective Theory

We calculate the decay rate of light scalar mesons, using a diquark chiral effective theory, recently proposed to describe exotic hadrons. In the effective theory the light scalar mesons are postulated to be bound states of diquark and anti-diquark. We find our results are in good agreement with experimental data. The axial couplings of diquarks with pions and kaons are found to be quite small and the perturbation is reliable. It shows that the diquark picture captures the correct physics of light scalar mesons.

Opening the Window for Technicolor

Recently a new class of technicolor models are proposed, using technifermions of symmetric second-rank tensor. In the models, one can make reasonable estimates of physical quantities like the Higgs mass and the size of oblique corrections, using a correspondence to super Yang-Mills theory in the Corrigan-Ramond limit. The models predict a surprisingly light Higgs of mass, $m_H=150\sim 500 {\rm GeV}$ and have naturally small $S$ parameter.

High Temperature Superfluid and Feshbach Resonance

We study an effective field theory describing cold fermionic atoms near a Feshbach resonance. The theory gives a unique description of the dynamics in the limit that the energy of the Feshbach resonance is tuned to be twice that of the Fermi surface. We show that in this limit the zero temperature superfluid condensate is of order the Fermi energy, and obtain a critical temperature $T_C \simeq 0.43 T_F$

Meson Mass at Large Baryon Chemical Potential in Dense QCD

We reexamine the quark mass induced term in chiral Lagrangian in color-flavor locking phase in dense QCD, and show that the meson mass term is determined by three independent invariants under chiral-axial symmetry, and a meson mass is given in terms of the quark mass, gap, and the chemical potential by $m_π^2\sim m_q^2Δ\barΔ/μ^2\ln(μ^2/Δ^2)$. Thus mesons become massless as $μ\to\infty$.

Anomalous Magnetic Moment of Anyons in three dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ Model

We calculate the anomalous magnetic moment of anyons in three dimensional $CP^{N-1}$ model with a Chern-Simons term in various limits in $1/N$ expansion. We have found that for anyons of infinite mass the gyromagnetic ratio ($g$-factor) is 2 up to the next-to-leading order in $1/N$. Our result supports a recent claim that the $g$-factor of nonrelativistic anyons is exactly two. We also found that for $-{8\overπ}<θ<0$, the electromagnetic interation between two identical aynons of large mass are attractive.

Discrete Anomaly and Dynamical Mass in 2+1 dimensional $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ Model

We note that in (2+1)-dimensional gauge theories with even number of massless fermions, there is anomalous $Z_2$ symmetry if theory is regularized in a parity-invariant way. We then consider a parity invariant $U(1)_V\times U(1)_A$ model, which induces a mutual Chern-Simons term in the effective action due to $Z_2$ anomaly. The effect of the discrete anomaly is studied in the induced spin and in the dynamical fermion mass.
