Fredholm Properties and $L^p$-Spectra of Localized Rotating Waves in Parabolic Systems

In this paper we study spectra and Fredholm properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators $$\mathcal{L}v(x)=A\triangle v(x)+\langle Sx,\nabla v(x)\rangle+Df(v_{\star}(x))v(x),\,x\in\mathbb{R}^d,\,d\geqslant 2$$ where $v_{\star}:\mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ is a rotating wave profile with $v_{\star}(x)\to v_{\infty}\in\mathbb{R}^m$ as $|x|\to\infty$, $f:\mathbb{R}^m\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^m$ is smooth, $A\in\mathbb{R}^{m,m}$ has eigenvalues with positive real parts and commutes with the limit matrix $Df(v_{\infty})$. The matrix $S\in\mathbb{R}^{d,d}$ is assumed to be skew-symmetric with eigenvalues $(λ_1,\ldots,λ_d)=(\pm iσ_1,\ldots,\pm i σ_k,0,\ldots,0)$. The spectra of these linearized operators are crucial for the nonlinear stability of rotating waves in reaction diffusion systems. We prove under suitable conditions that every $λ\in\mathbb{C}$ satisfying the dispersion relation $$\det\Big(λI_m + η^2 A - Df(v_{\infty}) + i\langle n,σ\rangle I_m\Big)=0\quad\text{for some $η\in\mathbb{R}$ and $n\in\mathbb{Z}^k$}$$ belongs to the essential spectrum $σ_{\mathrm{ess}}(\mathcal{L})$ in $L^p$. For values $\mathrm{Re}\,λ$ to the right of the spectral bound for $Df(v_{\infty})$ we show that the operator $λI-\mathcal{L}$ is Fredholm of index $0$, solve the identification problem for the adjoint operator $(λI-\mathcal{L})^*$, and formulate the Fredholm alternative. Moreover, we show that the set $$σ(S)\cup\{λ_i+λ_j:\;λ_i,λ_j\inσ(S),\,1\leqslant i<j\leqslant d\}$$ belongs to the point spectrum $σ_{\mathrm{pt}}(\mathcal{L})$ in $L^p$. We determine their eigenfunctions and show that they decay exponentially in space. As an application we analyze spinning soliton solutions which occur in the Ginzburg-Landau equation and compute their numerical spectra as well as associated eigenfunctions.

Spatial Decay of Rotating Waves in Reaction Diffusion Systems

In this paper we study nonlinear problems for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators \begin{align*} A\triangle v(x) + \left\langle Sx,\nabla v(x)\right\rangle + f(v(x)) = 0,\,x\in\mathbb{R}^d,\,d\geqslant 2, \end{align*} where the matrix $A\in\mathbb{R}^{N,N}$ is diagonalizable and has eigenvalues with positive real part, the map $f:\mathbb{R}^N\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^N$ is sufficiently smooth and the matrix $S\in\mathbb{R}^{d,d}$ in the unbounded drift term is skew-symmetric. Nonlinear problems of this form appear as stationary equations for rotating waves in time-dependent reaction diffusion systems. We prove under appropriate conditions that every bounded classical solution $v_{\star}$ of the nonlinear problem, which falls below a certain threshold at infinity, already decays exponentially in space, in the sense that $v_{\star}$ belongs to an exponentially weighted Sobolev space $ W^{1,p}_θ(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{R}^N)$. Several extensions of this basic result are presented: to complex-valued systems, to exponential decay in higher order Sobolev spaces and to pointwise estimates. We also prove that every bounded classical solution $v$ of the eigenvalue problem \begin{align*} A\triangle v(x) + \left\langle Sx,\nabla v(x)\right\rangle + Df(v_{\star}(x))v(x) = λv(x),\,x\in\mathbb{R}^d,\,d\geqslant 2, \end{align*} decays exponentially in space, provided $\mathrm{Re}\,λ$ lies to the right of the essential spectrum. As an application we analyze spinning soliton solutions which occur in the Ginzburg-Landau equation. Our results form the basis for investigating nonlinear stability of rotating waves in higher space dimensions and truncations to bounded domains.

A new $L^p$-Antieigenvalue Condition for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Operators

In this paper we study perturbed Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators \begin{align*} \left[ \mathcal{L}_{\infty} v\right](x) = A\triangle v(x) + \left\langle Sx,\nabla v(x)\right\rangle-B v(x),\,x\in\mathbb{R}^d,\,d\geqslant 2, \end{align*} for simultaneously diagonalizable matrices $A,B\in\mathbb{C}^{N,N}$. The unbounded drift term is defined by a skew-symmetric matrix $S\in\mathbb{R}^{d,d}$. Differential operators of this form appear when investigating rotating waves in time-dependent reaction diffusion systems. As shown in a companion paper, one key assumption to prove resolvent estimates of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{C}^N)$, $1<p<\infty$, is the following $L^p$-dissipativity condition \begin{align*} |z|^2\mathrm{Re} \left\langle w,Aw \right\rangle + (p-2)\mathrm{Re} \left\langle w,z \right\rangle\mathrm{Re} \left\langle z,Aw \right\rangle \geqslant γ_A |z|^2|w|^2\; \forall\, z,w \in \mathbb{C}^N \end{align*} for some $γ_A>0$. We prove that the $L^p$-dissipativity condition is equivalent to a new $L^p$-antieigenvalue condition \begin{align*} A\text{ invertible} \quad \text{and} \quad μ_1(A) > \frac{|p-2|}{p}, \,1<p<\infty, \,μ_1(A) \text{ first antieigenvalue of $A$,} \end{align*} which is a lower $p$-dependent bound of the first antieigenvalue of the diffusion matrix $A$. This relation provides a complete algebraic characterization and a geometric meaning of $L^p$-dissipativity for complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in terms of the antieigenvalues of $A$. The proof is based on the method of Lagrange multipliers. We also discuss several special cases in which the first antieigenvalue can be given explicitly.

Exponentially weighted resolvent estimates for complex Ornstein-Uhlenbeck systems

In this paper we study differential operators of the form \begin{align*} \left[\mathcal{L}_\infty v \right](x) = A\triangle v(x) + \left\langle Sx,\nabla v(x) \right\rangle - Bv(x), \,x \in \mathbb{R}^d, \,d \geqslant 2, \end{align*} for matrices $A,B\in\mathbb{C}^{N,N}$, where the eigenvalues of $A$ have positive real parts. The sum $A\triangle v(x) + \left\langle Sx, \nabla v(x) \right\rangle$ is known as the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator with an unbounded drift term defined by a skew-symmetric matrix $S\in\mathbb{R}^{d,d}$. Differential operators such as $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ arise as linearizations at rotating waves in time-dependent reaction diffusion systems. The results of this paper serve as foundation for proving exponential decay of such waves. Under the assumption that $A$ and $B$ can be diagonalized simultaneously we construct a heat kernel matrix $H(x,ξ,t)$ of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ that solves the evolution equation $v_t=\mathcal{L}_{\infty}v$. In the following we study the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup \begin{align*} \left[ T(t)v\right](x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^d} H(x,ξ,t) v(ξ) dξ,\,x \in \mathbb{R}^d,\, t>0, \end{align*} in exponentially weighted function spaces. This is used to derive resolvent estimates for $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ in exponentially weighted $L^p$-spaces $L^p_θ (\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{C}^N)$, $1\leqslant p<\infty$, as well as in exponentially weighted $C_{\mathrm{b}}$-spaces $C_{\mathrm{b},θ}(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{C}^N)$.

The Identification Problem for complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Operators in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{C}^N)$

In this paper we study perturbed Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators \begin{align*}[\mathcal{L}_{\infty} v](x)=A\triangle v(x)+\langle Sx,\nabla v(x)\rangle-B v(x),\,x\in\mathbb{R}^d,\,d\geqslant 2,\end{align*} for simultaneously diagonalizable matrices $A,B\in\mathbb{C}^{N,N}$. The unbounded drift term is defined by a skew-symmetric matrix $S\in\mathbb{R}^{d,d}$. Differential operators of this form appear when investigating rotating waves in time-dependent reaction diffusion systems. We prove under certain conditions that the maximal domain $\mathcal{D}(A_p)$ of the generator $A_p$ belonging to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup coincides with the domain of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d,\mathbb{C}^N)$ given by \begin{align*}\mathcal{D}^p_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathcal{L}_0)=\left\{v\in W^{2,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}\cap L^p\mid A\triangle v+\langle S\cdot,\nabla v\rangle\in L^p\right\},\,1<p<\infty.\end{align*} One key assumption is a new $L^p$-antieigenvalue condition \begin{align*} μ_1(A) > \frac{|p-2|}{p},\, 1<p<\infty, \,μ_1(A) \text{ first antieigenvalue of $A$.}\end{align*} The proof utilizes the following ingredients. First we show the closedness of $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ in $L^p$ and derive $L^p$-resolvent estimates for $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$. Then we prove that the Schwartz space is a core of $A_p$ and apply an $L^p$-solvability result of the resolvent equation for $A_p$. A second characterization shows that the maximal domain even coincides with \begin{align*}\mathcal{D}^p_{\mathrm{max}}(\mathcal{L}_0)=\{v\in W^{2,p}\mid \left\langle S\cdot,\nabla v\right\rangle\in L^p\},\,1<p<\infty.\end{align*} This second characterization is based on the first one, and its proof requires $L^p$-regularity for the Cauchy problem associated with $A_p$. Finally, we show a $W^{2,p}$-resolvent estimate for $\mathcal{L}_{\infty}$ and an $L^p$-estimate for the drift term $\langle S\cdot,\nabla v\rangle$.
