Large Algebraic Integers

An algebraic integer is said large if all its real or complex embeddings have absolute value larger than $1$. An integral ideal is said \emph{large} if it admits a large generator. We investigate the notion of largeness, relating it to some arithmetic invariants of the field involved, such as the regulator and the covering radius of the lattice of units. We also study its connection with the Weil height and the Bogomolov property. We provide an algorithm for testing largeness and give some applications to the construction of floor functions arising in the theory of continued fractions.

Plane Curves With Minimal Discriminant

We give lower bounds for the degree of the discriminant with respect to y of separable polynomials f in K[x,y] over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Depending on the invariants involved in the lower bound, we give a geometrical characterisation of those polynomials having minimal discriminant, and give an explicit construction of all such polynomials in many cases. In particular, we show that irreducible monic polynomials with minimal discriminant coincide with coordinate polynomials. We obtain analogous partial results for the case of nonmonic or reducible polynomials by studying their GL2(K[x])-orbit and by establishing some combinatorial constraints on their Newton polytope. Our results suggest some natural extensions of the embedding line theorem of Abhyankar-Moh and of the Nagata-Coolidge problem to the case of unicuspidal curves of P1 x P1.

Explicit n-descent on elliptic curves. III. Algorithms

This is the third in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, with the aim of representing its elements as curves of degree n in P^{n-1}. The methods we describe are practical in the case n=3 for elliptic curves over the rationals, and have been implemented in Magma. One important ingredient of our work is an algorithm for trivialising central simple algebras. This is of independent interest: for example, it could be used for parametrising Brauer-Severi surfaces.

Explicit n-descent on elliptic curves, II. Geometry

This is the second in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve. In this paper, we show how to realize elements of the n-Selmer group explicitly as curves of degree n embedded in P^{n-1}. The main tool we use is a comparison between an easily obtained embedding into P^{n^2-1} and another map into P^{n^2-1} that factors through the Segre embedding P^{n-1} x P^{n-1} --> P^{n^2-1}. The comparison relies on an explicit version of the local-to-global principle for the n-torsion of the Brauer group of the base field.
