The number of the non-full-rank Steiner triple systems

The $p$-rank of a Steiner triple system $B$ is the dimension of the linear span of the set of characteristic vectors of blocks of $B$, over GF$(p)$. We derive a formula for the number of different Steiner triple systems of order $v$ and given $2$-rank $r_2$, $r_2<v$, and a formula for the number of Steiner triple systems of order $v$ and given $3$-rank $r_3$, $r_3<v-1$. Also, we prove that there are no Steiner triple systems of $2$-rank smaller than $v$ and, at the same time, $3$-rank smaller than $v-1$. Our results extend previous work on enumerating Steiner triple systems according to the rank of their codes, mainly by Tonchev, V.A.Zinoviev and D.V.Zinoviev for the binary case and by Jungnickel and Tonchev for the ternary case.

Zero sum sets in abelian groups

The distribution of cardinalities of zero-sum sets in abelian groups is completely determined. A complex summation involving the Möbius function is given for the general abelian group, while in many special cases, including the case of elementary abelian groups, solved earlier by Li and Wan, it has a compact form. The proof involves two different Möbius transforms, on positive integers and on set partitions.

On $Z_pZ_{p^k}$-additive codes and their duality

In this paper, two different Gray-like maps from $Z_p^α\times Z_{p^k}^β$, where $p$ is prime, to $Z_p^n$, $n={α+βp^{k-1}}$, denoted by $ϕ$ and $Φ$, respectively, are presented. We have determined the connection between the weight enumerators among the image codes under these two mappings. We show that if $C$ is a $Z_p Z_{p^k}$-additive code, and $C^\bot$ is its dual, then the weight enumerators of the image $p$-ary codes $ϕ(C)$ and $Φ(C^\bot)$ are formally dual. This is a partial generalization of [On $Z_{2^k}$-dual binary codes, arXiv:math/0509325], and the result is generalized to odd characteristic $p$ and mixed alphabet. Additionally, a construction of $1$-perfect additive codes in the mixed $Z_p Z_{p^2} ... Z_{p^k}$ alphabet is given.

On the number of resolvable Steiner triple systems of small 3-rank

In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

Embedding in $q$-ary $1$-perfect codes and partitions

We prove that every $1$-error-correcting code over a finite field can be embedded in a $1$-perfect code of some larger length. Embedding in this context means that the original code is a subcode of the resulting $1$-perfect code and can be obtained from it by repeated shortening. Further, we generalize the results to partitions: every partition of the Hamming space into $1$-error-correcting codes can be embedded in a partition of a space of some larger dimension into $1$-perfect codes. For the partitions, the embedding length is close to the theoretical bound for the general case and optimal for the binary case. Keywords: error-correcting code, $1$-perfect code, $1$-perfect partition, embedding

Non-existence of a ternary constant weight $(16, 5, 15; 2048)$ diameter perfect code

Ternary constant weight codes of length $n=2^m$, weight $n-1$, cardinality $2^n$ and distance $5$ are known to exist for every $m$ for which there exists an APN permutation of order $2^m$, that is, at least for all odd $m \geq 3$ and for $m=6$. We show the non-existence of such codes for $m=4$ and prove that any codes with the parameters above are diameter perfect.

On the Classification of MDS Codes

A $q$-ary code of length $n$, size $M$, and minimum distance $d$ is called an $(n,M,d)_q$ code. An $(n,q^{k},n-k+1)_q$ code is called a maximum distance separable (MDS) code. In this work, some MDS codes over small alphabets are classified. It is shown that every $(k+d-1,q^k,d)_q$ code with $k\geq 3$, $d \geq 3$, $q \in \{5,7\}$ is equivalent to a linear code with the same parameters. This implies that the $(6,5^4,3)_5$ code and the $(n,7^{n-2},3)_7$ MDS codes for $n\in\{6,7,8\}$ are unique. The classification of one-error-correcting $8$-ary MDS codes is also finished; there are $14$, $8$, $4$, and $4$ equivalence classes of $(n,8^{n-2},3)_8$ codes for $n=6,7,8,9$, respectively. One of the equivalence classes of perfect $(9,8^7,3)_8$ codes corresponds to the Hamming code and the other three are nonlinear codes for which there exists no previously known construction.

On Optimal Binary One-Error-Correcting Codes of Lengths $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$

Best and Brouwer [Discrete Math. 17 (1977), 235-245] proved that triply-shortened and doubly-shortened binary Hamming codes (which have length $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$, respectively) are optimal. Properties of such codes are here studied, determining among other things parameters of certain subcodes. A utilization of these properties makes a computer-aided classification of the optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of lengths 12 and 13 possible; there are 237610 and 117823 such codes, respectively (with 27375 and 17513 inequivalent extensions). This completes the classification of optimal binary one-error-correcting codes for all lengths up to 15. Some properties of the classified codes are further investigated. Finally, it is proved that for any $m \geq 4$, there are optimal binary one-error-correcting codes of length $2^m-4$ and $2^m-3$ that cannot be lengthened to perfect codes of length $2^m-1$.
