PANSATZ: Pulse-based Ansatz for Variational Quantum Algorithms

We develop and implement a novel pulse-based ansatz, which we call PANSATZ, for more efficient and accurate implementations of variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) on today's noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers. Our approach is applied to quantum chemistry. Specifically, finding the ground-state energy associated with the electron configuration problem, using the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm for several molecules. We manage to achieve chemical accuracy both in simulation for several molecules and on one of IBM's NISQ devices for the $H_2$ molecule in the STO-3G basis. Our results are compared to a gate-based ansatz and show significant latency reduction - up to $7\times$ shorter ansatz schedules. We also show that this ansatz has structured adaptivity to the entanglement level required by the problem.

Experimental Bayesian estimation of quantum state preparation, measurement, and gate errors in multi-qubit devices

We introduce a Bayesian method for the estimation of single qubit errors in quantum devices, and use it to characterize these errors on three 27-qubit superconducting qubit devices. We self-consistently estimate up to seven parameters of each qubit's state preparation, readout, and gate errors, analyze the stability of these errors as a function of time, and demonstrate easily implemented approaches for mitigating different errors before a quantum computation experiment. On the investigated devices we find non-negligible qubit reset errors that cannot be parametrized as a diagonal mixed state, but manifest as a coherent phase of a superposition with a small contribution from the qubit's excited state. We are able to mitigate such errors by applying pre-rotations on the initialized qubits, which we demonstrate with multi-qubit entangled states. Our results demonstrate that Bayesian estimation can resolve small parameters - including those pertaining to quantum gate errors - with a high relative accuracy, at a lower measurement cost as compared with standard characterization approaches.

Optical interface for a hybrid magnon-photon resonator

We study optical detection of magnetic resonance of a ferrimagnetic sphere resonator, which is strongly coupled to a microwave loop gap resonator. Optical fibers are employed for coupling the sphere resonator with light in the telecom band. We find that magnetic resonance can be optically detected in the region of anti-crossing between the loop gap and the ferrimagnetic resonances. By measuring the response time of the optical detection we rule out the possibility that microwave induced heating is responsible for the optical detectability.
