A Model for Birdwatching and other Chronological Sampling Activities

In many real life situations one has $m$ types of random events happening in chronological order within a time interval and one wishes to predict various milestones about these events or their subsets. An example is birdwatching. Suppose we can observe up to $m$ different types of birds during a season. At any moment a bird of type $i$ is observed with some probability. There are many natural questions a birdwatcher may have: how many observations should one expect to perform before recording all types of birds? Is there a time interval where the researcher is most likely to observe all species? Or, what is the likelihood that several species of birds will be observed at overlapping time intervals? Our paper answers these questions using a new model based on random interval graphs. This model is a natural follow up to the famous coupon collector's problem.

Colorful Associahedra and Cyclohedra

Every n-edge colored n-regular graph G naturally gives rise to a simple abstract n-polytope, the colorful polytope of G, whose 1-skeleton is isomorphic to G. The paper describes colorful polytope versions of the associahedron and cyclohedron. Like their classical counterparts, the colorful associahedron and cyclohedron encode triangulations and flips, but now with the added feature that the diagonals of the triangulations are colored and adjacency of triangulations requires color preserving flips. The colorful associahedron and cyclohedron are derived as colorful polytopes from the edge colored graph whose vertices represent these triangulations and whose colors on edges represent the colors of flipped diagonals.

The (p,q)-extremal problem and the fractional chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs

The problem of computing the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs has been extensively studied over the last 40 years and the fractional version of the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs is only solved for particular cases. The \emph{$(p,q)$-extremal problem} consists in finding the maximum number of edges on a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with $n$ vertices such that among any $p$ edges some $q$ of them have no empty intersection. In this paper we have found a link between the fractional chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs and the $(p,q)$-extremal problem and also solve the $(p,q)$-extremal problem for graphs if $n$ is sufficiently large and $p \geq q \geq 3$ by proposing it as a problem of extremal graph theory. With the aid of this result we calculate the fractional chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs when they are composed with sets of cardinality 2.

The chromatic number of comparability 3-hypergraphs

Beginning with the concepts of orientation for a 3-hypergraph and transitivity for an oriented 3-hypergraph, it is natural to study the class of comparability 3-hypergraphs (those that can be transitively oriented). In this work we show three different behaviors in respect to the relationship between the chromatic number and the clique number of a comparability 3-hypergraph, this is in contrast with the fact that a comparability simple graph is a perfect graph.

Colorful Polytopes and Graphs

The paper investigates connections between abstract polytopes and properly edge colored graphs. Given any finite n-edge-colored n-regular graph G, we associate to G a simple abstract polytope P_G of rank n, called the colorful polytope of G, with 1-skeleton isomorphic to G. We investigate the interplay between the geometric, combinatorial, or algebraic properties of the polytope P_G and the combinatorial or algebraic structure of the underlying graph G, focussing in particular on aspects of symmetry. Several such families of colorful polytopes are studied including examples derived from a Cayley graph, in particular the graphicahedra, as well as the flag adjacency polytopes and related monodromy polytopes associated with a given abstract polytope. The duals of certain families of colorful polytopes have been important in the topological study of colored triangulations and crystallization of manifolds.

Symmetric Graphicahedra

Given a connected graph G with p vertices and q edges, the G-graphicahedron is a vertex-transitive simple abstract polytope of rank q whose edge-graph is isomorphic to a Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_p associated with G. The paper explores combinatorial symmetry properties of G-graphicahedra, focussing in particular on transitivity properties of their automorphism groups. We present a detailed analysis of the graphicahedra for the q-star graphs K_{1,q} and the q-cycles C_q. The C_q-graphicahedron is intimately related to the geometry of the infinite Euclidean Coxeter group \tilde{A}_{q-1} and can be viewed as an edge-transitive tessellation of the (q-1)-torus by (q-1)-dimensional permutahedra, obtained as a quotient, modulo the root lattice A_{q-1}, of the Voronoi tiling for the dual root lattice A_{q-1}^* in Euclidean (q-1)-space.

Transitive oriented 3-Hypergraphs of cyclic orders

In this paper we introduce the definition of transitivity for oriented 3-hypergraphs in order to study partial and complete cyclic orders. This definition allow us to give sufficient conditions on a partial cyclic order to be totally extendable. Furthermore, we introduce the 3-hypergraph associated to a cyclic permutation and characterize it in terms of cyclic comparability 3-hypergraphs.
