Quantum states and their back-reacted geometries in 2d dilaton gravity

Within the Russo-Susskind-Thorlacius (RST) two-dimensional model that includes a scalar (dilaton) field we address the important question of how the classical black hole geometry is modified in a semiclassical gravitational theory. It is the principle goal of this paper to analyze what is the back-reacted geometry that corresponds to a given quantum state. The story is shown to be dramatically different for the Hartle-Hawking state (HH) and for the Boulware state. In the HH case the back-reacted geometry is a modification of the classical black hole metric that still has a smooth horizon with a regular curvature. On the other hand, for the Boulware state the classical horizon is replaced by a throat in which the $(tt)$ component of the metric (while non-zero) is extremely small. The value of the metric at the throat is bounded by the inverse of the classical black hole entropy. On the other side of the throat the spacetime is ended at a null singularity. More generally, we identify a family of quantum states and their respective back-reacted geometries. We also identify a certain duality in the space of states. Finally, we study a hybrid set-up where both physical and non-physical fields, such as the ghosts, could be present. We suggest that it is natural to associate ghosts with the Boulware state, while the physical fields can be in any quantum state. In particular, if the physical fields are in the HH state, then the corresponding semiclassical geometry is horizonless. Depending on the balance between the number of physical fields and ghosts, it generically has a throat that may join with another asymptotically flat region on the other side of the throat.

Stringent constraint on the radio signal from dark matter annihilation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies using the TGSS

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are considered to be one of the favoured dark matter candidates. Searching for any detectable signal due to the annihilation and decay of WIMPs over the entire electromagnetic spectrum has become a matter of interest for the last few decades. WIMP annihilation to Standard Model particles gives rise to a possibility of detection of this signal at low radio frequencies via synchrotron radiation. Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies (dSphs) are expected to contain a huge amount of dark matter which makes them promising targets to search for such large scale diffuse radio emission. In this work, we present a stacking analysis of 23 dSph galaxies observed at low frequency (147.5MHz) as part of the TIFR-GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS). The non-detection of any signal from these stacking exercises put very tight constraints on the dark matter parameters. The best limit comes from the novel method of stacking after scaling the radio images of the individual dSph galaxy fields after scaling them by the respective half-light radius. The constraint on the thermally averaged cross-section is below the thermal relic cross-section value over a range of WIMP mass for reasonable choices of relevant astrophysical parameters. Such analysis using future deeper observation of individual targets as well as stacking can potentially reveal more about the WIMP dark matter properties.

Endpoint contributions to excited-state modular Hamiltonians

We compute modular Hamiltonians for excited states obtained by perturbing the vacuum with a unitary operator. We use operator methods and work to first order in the strength of the perturbation. For the most part we divide space in half and focus on perturbations generated by integrating a local operator $J$ over a null plane. Local operators with weight $n \geq 2$ under vacuum modular flow produce an additional endpoint contribution to the modular Hamiltonian. Intuitively this is because operators with weight $n \geq 2$ can move degrees of freedom from a region to its complement. The endpoint contribution is an integral of $J$ over a null plane. We show this in detail for stress tensor perturbations in two dimensions, where the result can be verified by a conformal transformation, and for scalar perturbations in a CFT. This lets us conjecture a general form for the endpoint contribution that applies to any field theory divided into half-spaces.

Cosmology with Recombination Spectrum

Precision measurement of the cosmological recombination spectrum can provide an entire new window to look at the early universe. We aim to quantify the information hidden in the cosmological recombination spectrum and for this purpose we have developed a new code following the algorithm proposed in Ali-Haimoud and Hirata (2010), Ali-Haimoud (2013). Our code is closely based on the COSMOSPEC code [Chluba and Ali-Haimoud (2016)]. We find, using Fisher information matrix and assuming that the foregrounds can be subtracted by using higher or lower frequency channels and spatial information, that going beyond the detection will need an experiment with sensitivity $25$ times better compared to the proposed experiment PIXIE. Such an experiment will be able to measure the cosmological parameters with a precision that is competitive with the CMB anisotropy experiments. The best constrainted parameter is baryon energy density, $Ω_{\rm b}$, which can be nailed down with incredible precision in principle. We also show that the shape of the hydrogen lines is connected to the speed of the hydrogen recombination, with the peaks of the recombination lines coinciding with the peak of the recombination rate. In general, the shape of the lines encodes information about the rate of recombination as a function of redshift.

Firewalls as artefacts of inconsistent truncations of quantum geometries

In this paper we argue that a firewall is simply a manifestation of an inconsistent truncation of non-perturbative effects that unitarize the semiclassical black hole. Namely, we show that a naive truncation of quantum corrections to the Hawking spectrum at order ${\cal O}(e^{-S})$, inexorably leads to a "localised'' divergent energy density near the black hole horizon. Nevertheless, in the same approximation, a distant observer only sees a discretised spectrum and concludes that unitarity is achieved by ${\cal O}(e^{-S})$ effects. This is due to the fact that instead, the correct quantum corrections to the Hawking spectrum go like ${\cal O}( g^{tt} e^{-S})$. Therefore, while at a distance far away from the horizon, where $g^{tt}\approx 1$, quantum corrections {\it are} perturbative, they {\it do} diverge close to the horizon, where $g^{tt}\rightarrow \infty$. Nevertheless, these "corrections" nicely re-sum so that correlations functions are smooth at the would-be black hole horizon. Thus, we conclude that the appearance of firewalls is just a signal of the breaking of the semiclassical approximation at the Page time, even for large black holes.

Hologram of a pure state black hole

In this paper we extend the HKLL holographic smearing function method to reconstruct (quasi)local AdS bulk scalar observables in the background of a large AdS black hole formed by null shell collapse (a "pure state" black hole), from the dual CFT which is undergoing a sudden quench. In particular, we probe the near horizon and sub-horizon bulk locality. First we construct local bulk operators from the CFT in the leading semiclassical limit, $N\rightarrow\infty$. Then we look at effects due to the finiteness of $N$, where we propose a suitable coarse-graining prescription involving early and late time cut-offs to define semiclassical bulk observables which are approximately local; their departure from locality being non-perturbatively small in $N$. Our results have important implications on the black hole information problem.

Holographic Representation of Higher Spin Gauge Fields

Extending the results of \cite{Heem}, \cite{KLRS} on the holographic representation of local gauge field operators in anti de Sitter space, here we construct the bulk operators for higher spin gauge fields in the leading order of $\frac{1}{N}$ expansion. Working in holographic gauge for higher spin gauge fields, we show that gauge field operators with integer spin $s>1$ can be represented by an integration over a ball region, which is the interior region of the spacelike bulk lightcone on the boundary. The construction is shown to be AdS-covariant up to gauge transformations, and the two-point function between higher spin gauge fields and boundary higher spin current exhibit singularities on both bulk and boundary lightcones. We also comment on possible extension to the level of three-point functions and carry out a causal construction for higher spin fields in de Sitter spacetime.

(A)dS Holography with a Cut-off

We find out the smearing/ transfer functions that relate a local bulk operator with its boundary values at a cut-off surface located at $z=z_0$ of the AdS Poincaré patch. We compare these results with de Sitter counterparts and comment on their connections with corresponding construction for dS/ CFT. As the boundary values can help define the required field theory at $z=z_0$ and encode bulk locality in terms of it, our work can provide key information about holographic RG in the context of AdS/ CFT.

Spinning Fluids: A Group Theoretical Approach

We extend the Lagrangian formulation of relativistic non-abelian fluids in group theory language. We propose a Mathisson-Papapetrou equation for spinning fluids in terms of the reduction limit of de Sitter group. The equation we find correctly boils down to the one for non-spinning fluids. We study the application of our results for an FRW cosmological background for fluids with no vorticity and for dusts in the vicinity of a Kerr black hole. We also explore two alternative approaches based on a group theoretical formulation of particles dynamics.

Black Hole Formation at the Correspondence Point

We study the process of bound state formation in a D-brane collision. We consider two mechanisms for bound state formation. The first, operative at weak coupling in the worldvolume gauge theory, is pair creation of W-bosons. The second, operative at strong coupling, corresponds to formation of a large black hole in the dual supergravity. These two processes agree qualitatively at intermediate coupling, in accord with the correspondence principle of Horowitz and Polchinski. We show that the size of the bound state and timescale for formation of a bound state agree at the correspondence point. The timescale involves matching a parametric resonance in the gauge theory to a quasinormal mode in supergravity.

Black Hole Formation in Fuzzy Sphere Collapse

We study the collapse of a fuzzy sphere, that is a spherical membrane built out of D0-branes, in the BFSS model. At weak coupling, as the sphere shrinks, open strings are produced. If the initial radius is large then open string production is not important and the sphere behaves classically. At intermediate initial radius the back-reaction from open string production is important but the fuzzy sphere retains its identity. At small initial radius the sphere collapses to form a black hole. The crossover between the later two regimes is smooth and occurs at the correspondence point of Horowitz and Polchinski.

Cosmic string interactions induced by gauge and scalar fields

We study the interaction between two parallel cosmic strings induced by gauge fields and by scalar fields with non-minimal couplings to curvature. For small deficit angles the gauge field behaves like a collection of non-minimal scalars with a specific value for the non-minimal coupling. We check this equivalence by computing the interaction energy between strings at first order in the deficit angles. This result provides another physical context for the "contact terms" which play an important role in the renormalization of black hole entropy due to a spin-1 field.

Holographic representation of bulk fields with spin in AdS/CFT

We develop the representation of bulk fields with spin one and spin two in anti-de Sitter space, as non-local observables in the dual CFT. Working in holographic gauge in the bulk, at leading order in 1/N bulk gauge fields are obtained by smearing boundary currents over a sphere on the complexified boundary, while linearized metric fluctuations are obtained by smearing the boundary stress tensor over a ball. This representation respects AdS covariance up to a compensating gauge transformation. We also consider massive vector fields, where the bulk field is obtained by smearing a non-conserved current. We compute bulk two-point functions and show that bulk locality is respected. We show how to include interactions of massive vectors using 1/N perturbation theory, and we comment on the issue of general backgrounds.
