Favorite sites of randomly biased walks on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree

Erdős and Révész initiated the study of favorite sites by considering the one-dimensional simple random walk. We investigate in this paper the same problem for a class of null-recurrent randomly biased walks on a supercritical Gaton-Watson tree. We prove that there is some parameter $κ\in (1, \infty]$ such that the set of the favorite sites of the biased walk is almost surely bounded in the case $κ\in (2, \infty]$, tight in the case $κ=2$, and oscillates between a neighborhood of the root and the boundary of the range in the case $κ\in (1, 2)$. Moreover, our results yield a complete answer to the cardinality of the set of favorite sites in the case $κ\in (2, \infty]$. The proof relies on the exploration of the Markov property of the local times process with respect to the space variable and on a precise tail estimate on the maximum of local times, using a change of measure for multi-type Galton-Watson trees.

Pao-Lu Hsu (Xu, Bao-lu): The Grandparent of Probability and Statistics in China

The years 1910-1911 are auspicious years in Chinese mathematics with the births of Pao-Lu Hsu, Luo-Keng Hua and Shiing-Shen Chern. These three began the development of modern mathematics in China: Hsu in probability and statistics, Hua in number theory, and Chern in differential geometry. We here review some facts about the life of P.-L. Hsu which have been uncovered recently, and then discuss some of his contributions. We have drawn heavily on three papers in the 1979 Annals of Statistics (volume 7, pages 467-483) by T. W. Anderson, K. L. Chung and E. L. Lehmann, as well as an article by Jiang Ze-Han and Duan Xue-Fu in Hsu's collected papers.

Some sufficient conditions for infinite collisions of simple random walks on a wedge comb

In this paper, we give some sufficient conditions for the infinite collisions of independent simple random walks on a wedge comb with profile $\{f(n), n\in \ZZ\}$. One interesting result is that if $f(n)$ has a growth order as $n\log n$, then two independent simple random walks on the wedge comb will collide infinitely many times. Another is that if $\{f(n); n\in \ZZ\}$ are given by i.i.d. non-negative random variables with finite mean, then for almost all wedge comb with such profile, three independent simple random walks on it will collide infinitely many times.
