Experimental observation of dynamical blockade between transmon qubits via ZZ interaction engineering

We report the experimental realization of strong longitudinal (ZZ) coupling between two superconducting transmon qubits achieved solely through capacitive engineering. By systematically varying the qubit frequency detuning, we measure cross-Kerr inter-qubit interaction strengths ranging from 10 MHz up to 350 MHz, more than an order of magnitude larger than previously observed in similar capacitively coupled systems. In this configuration, the qubits enter a strong-interaction regime in which the excitation of one qubit inhibits that of its neighbor, demonstrating a dynamical blockade mediated entirely by the engineered ZZ coupling. Circuit quantization simulations accurately reproduce the experimental results, while perturbative models confirm the theoretical origin of the energy shift as a hybridization between the computational states and higher-excitation manifolds. We establish a robust and scalable method to access interaction-dominated physics in superconducting circuits, providing a pathway towards solid-state implementations of globally controlled quantum architectures and cooperative many-body dynamics.

A hybrid ferromagnetic transmon qubit: circuit design, feasibility and detection protocols for magnetic fluctuations

We propose to exploit currently available tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions to realize a hybrid superconducting qubit. We show that the characteristic hysteretic behavior of the ferromagnetic barrier provides an alternative and intrinsically digital tuning of the qubit frequency by means of magnetic field pulses. To illustrate functionalities and limitation of the device, we discuss the coupling to a read-out resonator and the effect of magnetic fluctuations. The possibility to use the qubit as a noise detector and its relevance to investigate the subtle interplay of magnetism and superconductivity is envisaged.

Suspended InAs nanowire Josephson junctions assembled via dielectrophoresis

We present a novel technique for the realization of suspended Josephson junctions based on InAs semiconductor nanowires. The devices are assembled using a technique of drop-casting guided by dielectrophoresis that allows to finely align the nanostructures on top of the electrodes. The proposed architecture removes the interaction between the nanowire and the substrate which is known to influence disorder and the orientation of the Rashba vector. The relevance of this approach in view of the implementation of Josephson junctions based on High-Temperature Superconductors is discussed.

Direct transition from quantum escape to phase diffusion regime in YBaCuO biepitaxial Josephson Junctions

Dissipation encodes interaction of a quantum system with the environment and regulates the activation regimes of a Brownian particle. We have engineered grain boundary biepitaxial YBaCuO junctions to drive a direct transition from quantum activated running state to phase diffusion regime. The cross-over to the quantum regime is tuned by the magnetic field and dissipation is encoded in a fully consistent set of junction parameters. To unravel phase dynamics in moderately damped systems is of general interest for advances in the comprehension of retrapping phenomena and in view of quantum hybrid technology.

Quantum crossover in moderately damped epitaxial NbN/MgO/NbN junctions with low critical current density

High quality epitaxial NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junctions have been realized with MgO barriers up to a thickness of d=1 nm. The junction properties coherently scale with the size of barrier, and low critical current densities down to 3 A/cm$^2$ have been achieved for larger barriers. In this limit, junctions exhibit macroscopic quantum phenomena for temperatures lower than 90 mK. Measurements and junction parameters support the notion of a possible use of these devices for multiphoton quantum experiments, taking advantage of the fast non equilibrium electron-phonon relaxation times of NbN.

Thermal hopping and retrapping of a Brownian particle in the tilted periodic potential of a NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junction

We report on the occurrence of multiple hopping and retrapping of a Brownian particle in a tilted washboard potential. The escape dynamic has been studied experimentally by measuring the switching current distributions as a function of temperature in a moderately damped NbN/MgO/NbN Josephson junction. At low temperatures the second moment of the distribution increases in agreement with calculations based on Kramers thermal activation regime. After a turn-over temperature T*, the shape of the distributions starts changing and width decreases with temperature. We analyze the data through fit of the switching probability and Monte Carlo simulations and we find a good agreement with a model based on a multiple retrapping process.
