On the role of Allee effect and mass migration in survival and extinction of a species

We use interacting particle systems to investigate survival and extinction of a species with colonies located on each site of $\mathbb {Z}^d$. In each of the four models studied, an individual in a local population can reproduce, die or migrate to neighboring sites. We prove that an increase of the death rate when the local population density is small (the Allee effect) may be critical for survival, and that the migration of large flocks of individuals is a possible solution to avoid extinction when the Allee effect is strong. We use attractiveness and comparison with oriented percolation, either to prove the extinction of the species, or to construct nontrivial invariant measures for each model.

Stochastic order and attractiveness for particle systems with multiple births, deaths and jumps

An approach to analyse the properties of a particle system is to compare it with different processes to understand when one of them is larger than other ones. The main technique for that is coupling, which may not be easy to construct. We give a characterization of stochastic order between different interacting particle systems in a large class of processes with births, deaths and jumps of many particles per time depending on the configuration in a general way: it consists in checking inequalities involving the transition rates. We construct explicitly the coupling that characterizes the stochastic order. As a corollary we get necessary and sufficient conditions for attractiveness. As an application, we first give the conditions on examples including reaction-diffusion processes, multitype contact process and conservative dynamics and then we improve an ergodicity result for an epidemic model.

The small world effect on the coalescing time of random walks

A small world is obtained from the $d$-dimensional torus of size 2L adding randomly chosen connections between sites, in a way such that each site has exactly one random neighbour in addition to its deterministic neighbours. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the meeting time $T_L$ of two random walks moving on this small world and compare it with the result on the torus. On the torus, in order to have convergence, we have to rescale $T_L$ by a factor $C_1L^2$ if $d=1$, by $C_2L^2\log L$ if $d=2$ and $C_dL^d$ if $d\ge3$. We prove that on the small world the rescaling factor is $C^\prime_dL^d$ and identify the constant $C^\prime_d$, proving that the walks always meet faster on the small world than on the torus if $d\le2$, while if $d\ge3$ this depends on the probability of moving along the random connection. As an application, we obtain results on the hitting time to the origin of a single walk and on the convergence of coalescing random walk systems on the small world.
