Artin algebraization for pairs with applications to the local structure of stacks and Ferrand pushouts

We give a variant of Artin algebraization along closed subschemes and closed substacks. Our main application is the existence of étale, smooth, or syntomic neighborhoods of closed subschemes and closed substacks. In particular, we prove local structure theorems for stacks and their derived counterparts and the existence of henselizations along linearly fundamental closed substacks. These results establish the existence of Ferrand pushouts, which answers positively a question of Temkin-Tyomkin.

Canonical reduction of stabilizers for Artin stacks with good moduli spaces

We present a complete generalization of Kirwan's partial desingularization theorem on quotients of smooth varieties. Precisely, we prove that if $\mathcal{X}$ is an irreducible Artin stack with stable good moduli space $\mathcal{X} \to X$, then there is a canonical sequence of birational morphisms of Artin stacks $\mathcal{X}_n \to \mathcal{X}_{n-1} \to \ldots \to \mathcal{X}_0 = \mathcal{X}$ with the following properties: (1) the maximum dimension of a stabilizer of a point of $\mathcal{X}_{k+1}$ is strictly smaller than the maximum dimension of a stabilizer of $\mathcal{X}_k$ and the final stack $\mathcal{X}_n$ has constant stabilizer dimension; (2) the morphisms $\mathcal{X}_{k+1} \to \mathcal{X}_k$ induce projective and birational morphisms of good moduli spaces $X_{k+1} \to X_{k}$. If in addition the stack $\mathcal{X}$ is smooth, then each of the intermediate stacks $\mathcal{X}_k$ is smooth and the final stack $\mathcal{X}_n$ is a gerbe over a tame stack. In this case the algebraic space $X_n$ has tame quotient singularities and is a partial desingularization of the good moduli space $X$. When $\mathcal{X}$ is smooth our result can be combined with D. Bergh's recent destackification theorem for tame stacks to obtain a full desingularization of the algebraic space $X$.

One positive and two negative results for derived categories of algebraic stacks

Let $X$ be a quasi-compact and quasi-separated scheme. There are two fundamental and pervasive facts about the unbounded derived category of $X$: (1) $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)$ is compactly generated by perfect complexes and (2) if $X$ is noetherian or has affine diagonal, then the functor $Ψ_X \colon \mathsf{D}(\mathsf{QCoh}(X)) \to \mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)$ is an equivalence. Our main results are that for algebraic stacks in positive characteristic, the assertions (1) and (2) are typically false.

Étale dévissage, descent and pushouts of stacks

We show that the pushout of an étale morphism and an open immersion exists in the category of algebraic stacks and show that such pushouts behave similarly to the gluing of two open substacks. For example, quasi-coherent sheaves on the pushout can be described by a simple gluing procedure. We then outline a powerful dévissage method for representable étale morphisms using such pushouts. We also give a variant of the dévissage method for representable quasi-finite flat morphisms.

Noetherian approximation of algebraic spaces and stacks

We show that every scheme/algebraic space/stack that is quasi-compact with quasi-finite diagonal can be approximated by a noetherian scheme/algebraic space/stack. More generally, we show that any stack which is etale-locally a global quotient stack can be approximated. Examples of applications are generalizations of Chevalley's, Serre's and Zariski's theorems and Chow's lemma to the non-noetherian setting. We also show that every quasi-compact algebraic stack with quasi-finite diagonal has a finite generically flat cover by a scheme.

Existence and properties of geometric quotients

In this paper, we study quotients of groupoids and coarse moduli spaces of stacks in a general setting. Geometric quotients are not always categorical, but we present a natural topological condition under which a geometric quotient is categorical. We also show the existence of geometric quotients of finite flat groupoids and give explicit local descriptions. Exploiting similar methods, we give an easy proof of the existence of quotients of flat groupoids with finite stabilizers. As the proofs do not use noetherian methods and are valid for general algebraic spaces and algebraic stacks, we obtain a slightly improved version of Keel and Mori's theorem.

The space of generically étale families

We construct a space $G^n_X$ and a rank $n$, generically etale family of closed subspaces in a separated ambient space $X$. The constructed pair satisfies a universal property of generically etale families of closed subspaces in $X$. This universal property is derived directly from the construction and does in particular not use the Hilbert scheme. The constructed space $G^n_X$ is by its universal property canonically identified with a closed subspace of the Hilbert scheme.

A minimal set of generators for the ring of multisymmetric functions

The purpose of this article is to give, for any commutative ring A, an explicit minimal set of generators for the ring of multisymmetric functions TS^d_A(A[x_1,...,x_r]) as an A-algebra. In characteristic zero, i.e. when A is an algebra over the rational numbers, a minimal set of generators has been known since the 19th century. A rather small generating set in the general case has also recently been given by Vaccarino but it is not minimal in general. We also give a sharp degree bound on the generators, improving the degree bound previously obtained by Fleischmann.
