Planar Novikov-Shubin invariant for adjacency matrices of structured directed dense random graphs

The Novikov-Shubin invariant associated to a graph provides information about the accumulation of eigenvalues of the corresponding adjacency matrix close to the origin. For a directed graph these eigenvalues lie in the complex plane and having a finite value for the planar Novikov-Shubin invariant indicates a polynomial behaviour of the eigenvalue density as a function of the distance to zero. We provide a complete description of these invariants for dense random digraphs with constant batch sizes, i.e. for the directed stochastic block model. The invariants depend only on which batches in the graph are connected by non-zero edge densities. We present an explicit finite step algorithm for their computation. For the proof we identify the asymptotic spectral density with the distribution of a $\mathbb{C}^K$-valued circular element in operator-valued free probability theory. We determine the spectral density in the bulk regime by solving the associated Dyson equation and infer the singular behaviour of this density close to the origin by determining the exponents associated to the power law with which the resolvent entries of the adjacency matrix that corresponds to the individual batches diverge to infinity or converge to zero.

Non-Hermitian random matrices with a variance profile (I): Deterministic equivalents and limiting ESDs

For each $n$, let $A_n=(σ_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ deterministic matrix and let $X_n=(X_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d. centered entries of unit variance. We study the asymptotic behavior of the empirical spectral distribution $μ_n^Y$ of the rescaled entry-wise product \[ Y_n = \left(\frac1{\sqrt{n}} σ_{ij}X_{ij}\right). \] For our main result we provide a deterministic sequence of probability measures $μ_n$, each described by a family of Master Equations, such that the difference $μ^Y_n - μ_n$ converges weakly in probability to the zero measure. A key feature of our results is to allow some of the entries $σ_{ij}$ to vanish, provided that the standard deviation profiles $A_n$ satisfy a certain quantitative irreducibility property. An important step is to obtain quantitative bounds on the solutions to an associate system of Schwinger--Dyson equations, which we accomplish in the general sparse setting using a novel graphical bootstrap argument.

Non-Hermitian random matrices with a variance profile (II): properties and examples

For each $n$, let $A_n=(σ_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ deterministic matrix and let $X_n=(X_{ij})$ be an $n\times n$ random matrix with i.i.d. centered entries of unit variance. In the companion article Cook et al., we considered the empirical spectral distribution $μ_n^Y$ of the rescaled entry-wise product \[ Y_n = \frac 1{\sqrt{n}} A_n\odot X_n = \left(\frac1{\sqrt{n}} σ_{ij}X_{ij}\right) \] and provided a deterministic sequence of probability measures $μ_n$ such that the difference $μ^Y_n - μ_n$ converges weakly in probability to the zero measure. A key feature in Cook et al. was to allow some of the entries $σ_{ij}$ to vanish, provided that the standard deviation profiles $A_n$ satisfy a certain quantitative irreducibility property. In the present article, we provide more information on the sequence $(μ_n)$, described by a family of Master Equations. We consider these equations in important special cases such as separable variance profiles $σ^2_{ij}=d_i \widetilde d_j$ and sampled variance profiles $σ^2_{ij} = σ^2\left(\frac in, \frac jn \right)$ where $(x,y)\mapsto σ^2(x,y)$ is a given function on $[0,1]^2$. Associate examples are provided where $μ_n^Y$ converges to a genuine limit. We study $μ_n$'s behavior at zero and provide examples where $μ_n$'s density is bounded, blows up, or vanishes while an atom appears. As a consequence, we identify the profiles that yield the circular law. Finally, building upon recent results from Alt et al., we prove that except maybe in zero, $μ_n$ admits a positive density on the centered disc of radius $\sqrt{ρ(V_n)}$, where $V_n=(\frac 1n σ_{ij}^2)$ and $ρ(V_n)$ is its spectral radius.

Central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of elliptic random matrices

We consider a class of elliptic random matrices which generalize two classical ensembles from random matrix theory: Wigner matrices and random matrices with iid entries. In particular, we establish a central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics of real elliptic random matrices under the assumption that the test functions are analytic. As a corollary, we extend the results of Rider and Silverstein to real iid random matrices.

Eigenvalues of block structured asymmetric random matrices

We study the spectrum of an asymmetric random matrix with block structured variances. The rows and columns of the random square matrix are divided into $D$ partitions with arbitrary size (linear in $N$). The parameters of the model are the variances of elements in each block, summarized in $g\in\mathbb{R}^{D\times D}_+$. Using the Hermitization approach and by studying the matrix-valued Stieltjes transform we show that these matrices have a circularly symmetric spectrum, we give an explicit formula for their spectral radius and a set of implicit equations for the full density function. We discuss applications of this model to neural networks.

On the low dimensional dynamics of structured random networks

Using a generalized random recurrent neural network model, and by extending our recently developed mean-field approach [J. Aljadeff, M. Stern, T. Sharpee, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 088101 (2015)], we study the relationship between the network connectivity structure and its low dimensional dynamics. Each connection in the network is a random number with mean 0 and variance that depends on pre- and post-synaptic neurons through a sufficiently smooth function $g$ of their identities. We find that these networks undergo a phase transition from a silent to a chaotic state at a critical point we derive as a function of $g$. Above the critical point, although unit activation levels are chaotic, their autocorrelation functions are restricted to a low dimensional subspace. This provides a direct link between the network's structure and some of its functional characteristics. We discuss example applications of the general results to neuroscience where we derive the support of the spectrum of connectivity matrices with heterogeneous and possibly correlated degree distributions, and to ecology where we study the stability of the cascade model for food web structure.

Products of independent elliptic random matrices

For fixed $m > 1$, we study the product of $m$ independent $N \times N$ elliptic random matrices as $N$ tends to infinity. Our main result shows that the empirical spectral distribution of the product converges, with probability $1$, to the $m$-th power of the circular law, regardless of the joint distribution of the mirror entries in each matrix. This leads to a new kind of universality phenomenon: the limit law for the product of independent random matrices is independent of the limit laws for the individual matrices themselves. Our result also generalizes earlier results of Götze-Tikhomirov and O'Rourke-Soshnikov concerning the product of independent iid random matrices.

Low rank perturbations of large elliptic random matrices

We study the asymptotic behavior of outliers in the spectrum of bounded rank perturbations of large random matrices. In particular, we consider perturbations of elliptic random matrices which generalize both Wigner random matrices and non-Hermitian random matrices with iid entries. As a consequence, we recover the results of Capitaine, Donati-Martin, and Féral for perturbed Wigner matrices as well as the results of Tao for perturbed random matrices with iid entries. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting results concerning elliptic random matrices whose entries have finite fourth moment; these results include a bound on the least singular value and the asymptotic behavior of the spectral radius.

Fluctuations of Matrix Entries of Regular Functions of Wigner Matrices

We study the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit when the matrix size goes to infinity. In the case of the Gaussian ensembles (GOE and GUE) this problem was considered by A.Lytova and L.Pastur in J. Stat. Phys., v.134, 147-159 (2009). Our results are valid provided the off-diagonal matrix entries have finite fourth moment, the diagonal matrix entries have finite second moment, and the test functions have four continuous derivatives in a neighborhood of the support of the Wigner semicircle law.

On Finite Rank Deformations of Wigner Matrices

We study the distribution of the outliers in the spectrum of finite rank deformations of Wigner random matrice under the assumption that the off-diagonal matrix entries have uniformly bounded fifth moment and the diagonal entries have uniformly bounded third moment. Using our recent results on the fluctuation of resolvent entries [31],[28], and ideas from [9], we extend results by M.Capitaine, C.Donati-Martin, and D.Féral [12], [13].

On Fluctuations of Matrix Entries of Regular Functions of Wigner Matrices with Non-Identically Distributed Entries

In this note, we extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices obtained in arXiv:1103.3731 [math.PR] to Wigner matrices with non-i.i.d. entries provided certain Lindeberg type conditions for the fourth moments of the off-diagonal entries and the second moments of the diagonal entries are satisfied. In addition, we relax our conditions on the test functions and require that for some $s>3 \ \int (1+|k|)^{2s}\*|\hat{f}(k)|^2 \* dk <\infty.$
