The curvature perturbation at second order

We give an explicit relation, up to second-order terms, between scalar-field fluctuations defined on spatially-flat slices and the curvature perturbation on uniform-density slices. This expression is a necessary ingredient for calculating observable quantities at second-order and beyond in multiple-field inflation. We show that traditional cosmological perturbation theory and the `separate universe' approach yield equivalent expressions for superhorizon wavenumbers, and in particular that all nonlocal terms can be eliminated from the perturbation-theory expressions.

Evolution of non-Gaussianity in multi-scalar field models

We study the evolution of non-Gaussianity in multiple-field inflationary models, focusing on three fundamental questions: (a) How is the sign and peak magnitude of the non-linearity parameter fNL related to generic features in the inflationary potential? (b) How sensitive is fNL to the process by which an adiabatic limit is reached, where the curvature perturbation becomes conserved? (c) For a given model, what is the appropriate tool -- analytic or numerical -- to calculate fNL at the adiabatic limit? We summarise recent results obtained by the authors and further elucidate them by considering an inflection point model.

Non-Gaussianity from the hybrid potential

We study the hybrid inflationary potential in a regime where the defect field is light, and more than 60 e-folds of accelerated expansion occur after the symmetry breaking transition. Using analytic and numerical techniques, we then identify parameter values within this regime for which the statistics of the primordial curvature perturbation are significantly non-Gaussian. Focusing on this range of parameters, we provide a specific example which leads to an observationally consistent power spectrum, and a level of non-Gaussianity within current WMAP bounds and in reach of the Planck satellite. An interesting feature of this example is that the initial conditions at horizon crossing appear quite natural.

Non-Gaussianity constrains hybrid inflation

In hybrid inflationary models, inflation ends by a sudden instability associated with a steep ridge in the potential. Here we argue that this feature can generate a large contribution to the curvature perturbation on observable scales. This contribution is almost scale-invariant but highly non-Gaussian. The degree of non-Gaussianity can exceed current observational bounds, unless the inflationary scale is extremely low or the hybrid potential contains very large coupling constants. Non-linear effects on small scales may quench the non-Gaussian signal, and while we find no compelling evidence that this occurs, full lattice simulations are required to definitively address this issue. Note added: We now believe that nonlinear effects will invalidate the original computation in this paper essentially instantaneously after the short-wavelength modes reach the minimum of their potential. This means that the mechanism described in this paper will not lead to appreciatable curvature perturbations on long wavelengths, and no useful constraints on hybrid inflation will result. We have inserted a brief calculation on p2 of this manuscript to explain this fact, but have otherwise left the manuscript unchanged.

The high-density regime of kinetic-dominated loop quantum cosmology

We study the dynamics of states perturbatively expanded about a harmonic system of loop quantum cosmology, exhibiting a bounce. In particular, the evolution equations for the first and second order moments of the system are analyzed. These moments back-react on the trajectories of the expectation values of the state and hence alter the energy density at the bounce. This analysis is performed for isotropic loop quantum cosmology coupled to a scalar field with a small but non-zero constant potential, hence in a regime in which the kinetic energy of matter dominates. Analytic restrictions on the existence of dynamical coherent states and the meaning of semi-classicality within these systems are discussed. A numerical investigation of the trajectories of states that remain semi-classical across the bounce demonstrates that, at least for such states, the bounce persists and that its properties are similar to the standard case, in which the moments of the states are entirely neglected. However the bounce density does change, implying that a quantum bounce may not be guaranteed to happen when the potential is no longer negligible.
