On the health of a vector field with (R A^2)/6 coupling to gravity

The coupling (R A^2)/6 of a vector field to gravity was proposed as a mechanism for generating a primordial magnetic field, and more recently as a mechanism for generating a statistically anisotropic contribution to the primordial curvature perturbation. In either case, the vector field's perturbation has both a transverse and a longitudinal component, and the latter has some unusual features which call into question the health of the theory. We calculate for the first time the energy density generated by the longitudinal field perturbations, and go on to argue that the theory may well be healthy in at least some versions.

Inflation models and observation

We consider small-field models which invoke the usual framework for the effective field theory, and large-field models which go beyond that. Present and future possibilities for discriminating between the models are assessed, on the assumption that the primordial curvature perturbation is generated during inflation. With PLANCK data, the theoretical and observational uncertainties on the spectral index will be comparable, providing useful discrimination between small-field models. Further discrimination between models may come later through the tensor fraction, the running of the spectral index and non-gaussianity. The prediction for the trispectrum in a generic multi-field inflation model is given for the first time.

Curvaton and QCD Axion in Supersymmetric Theories

A pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson as curvaton avoids the eta-problem of inflation which plagues most curvaton candidates. We point out that a concrete realization of the curvaton mechanism with a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson can be found in the supersymmetric Peccei-Quinn mechanism resolving the strong CP problem. In the flaton models of Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, the angular degree of freedom associated with the QCD axion can naturally be a flat direction during inflation and provides successful curvature perturbations. In this scheme, the preferred values of the axion scale and the Hubble parameter during inflation turn out to be about 10^{10} GeV and 10^{12} GeV, respectively. Moreover, it is found that a significant isocurvature component, (anti)correlated to the overall curvature perturbation, can be generated, which is a smoking-gun for the curvaton scenario. Finally, non-Gaussianity in the perturbation spectrum at potentially observable level is also possible.
