On the correction to Einstein's formula for the effective viscosity

This paper is a follow-up of article [6], on the derivation of accurate effective models for viscous dilute suspensions. The goal is to identify an effective Stokes equation providing a $o(λ^2)$ approximation of the exact fluid-particle system, with $λ$ the solid volume fraction of the particles. This means that we look for an improvement of Einstein's formula for the effective viscosity in the form $μ_{eff}(x) = μ+ \frac{5}{2} μρ(x) λ+ μ_2(x) λ^2$. Under a separation assumption on the particles, we proved in [6] that if a $o(λ)^2$ Stokes effective approximation exists, the correction $μ_2$ is necessarily given by a mean field limit, that can then be studied and computed under further assumptions on the particle configurations. Roughly, we go here from the conditional result of [6] to an unconditional result: we show that such a $o(λ^2)$ Stokes approximation indeed exists, as soon as the mean field limit exists. This includes the case of periodic and random stationary particle configurations.

Boundary Layer for a Non-Newtonian Flow over a Rough Surface

We analyze the effect of a rough surface on shear thinning and shear thickening fluids, modeled by power law stress tensors. The roughness is modeled by a small wavelength and small amplitude oscillation, parametrized by eps. We study the boundary layer corrector near the rough surface, and provide error estimates in terms of eps for the associated wall laws. With regards to previous studies, Mathematical difficulties arise from the nonlinearity of the corrector equations.

Computation of the effective slip of rough hydrophobic surfaces via homogenization

We present a quantitative analysis of the effect of rough hydrophobic surfaces on viscous newtonian flows. We use a model introduced by Ybert and coauthors in which the rough surface is replaced by a flat plane with alternating small areas of slip and no-slip. We investigate the averaged slip generated at the boundary, depending on the ratio between these areas. This problem reduces to the homogenization of a non-local system, involving the Dirichlet to Neumann map of the Stokes operator, in a domain with small holes. Pondering on works by Allaire, we compute accurate scaling laws of the averaged slip for various types of roughness (riblets, patches). Numerical computations complete and confirm the analysis.

Nonlinear boundary layers for rotating fluids

We investigate the behavior of rotating incompressible flows near a non-flat horizontal bottom. In the flat case, the velocity profile is given explicitly by a simple linear ODE. When bottom variations are taken into account, it is governed by a nonlinear PDE system, with far less obvious mathematical properties. We establish the well-posedness of this system and the asymptotic behavior of the solution away from the boundary. In the course of the proof, we investigate in particular the action of pseudo-differential operators in non-localized Sobolev spaces. Our results extend the older paper [18], restricted to periodic variations of the bottom. It ponders on the recent linear analysis carried in [14].

On shape optimization problems involving the fractional laplacian

Our concern is the computation of optimal shapes in problems involving $\(-Δ)^{1/2}$. We focus on the energy $J(Ω)$ associated to the solution $u\_Ω$ of the basic Dirichlet problem $(-Δ)^{1/2} u\_Ω= 1$ in $Ω$, $ u = 0$ in $Ω^c$. We show that regular minimizers $Ω$ of this energy under a volume constraint are disks. Our proof goes through the explicit computation of the shape derivative (that seems to be completely new in the fractional context), and a refined adaptation of the moving plane method.

Existence of weak solutions up to collision for viscous fluid-solid systems with slip

We study in this paper the movement of a rigid solid inside an incompressible Navier-Stokes flow, within a bounded domain. We consider the case where slip is allowed at the fluid/solid interface, through a Navier condition. Taking into account slip at the interface is very natural within this model, as classical no-slip conditions lead to unrealistic collisional behavior between the solid and the domain boundary. We prove for this model existence of weak solutions of Leray type, up to collision, in three dimensions. The key point is that, due to the slip condition, the velocity field is discontinuous across the fluid/solid interface. This prevents from obtaining global H1 bounds on the velocity, which makes many aspects of the theory of weak solutions for Dirichlet conditions unadapted.

Landau damping in the Kuramoto model

We consider the Kuramoto model of globally coupled phase oscillators in its continuum limit, with individual frequencies drawn from a distribution with density of class $C^n$ ($n\geq 4$). A criterion for linear stability of the uniform stationary state is established which, for basic examples of frequency distributions, is equivalent to the standard condition on the coupling strength in the literature. We prove that, under this criterion, the Kuramoto order parameter, when evolved under the full nonlinear dynamics, asymptotically vanishes (with polynomial rate $n$) for every trajectory issued from sufficiently small $C^n$ perturbation. The proof uses techniques from the Analysis of PDEs and closely follows recent proofs of the nonlinear Landau damping in the Vlasov equation and Vlasov-HMF model.

Quasineutral limit of the Euler-Poisson system for ions in a domain with boundaries II

In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.

The 2D Euler equation on singular domains

We establish the existence of global weak solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equation, for a large class of non-smooth open sets. These open sets are the complements (in a simply connected domain) of a finite number of connected compact sets with positive capacity. Existence of weak solutions with $L^p$ vorticity is deduced from an approximation argument, that relates to the so-called $Γ$-convergence of domains. Our results complete those obtained for convex domains, or for domains with asymptotically small holes. Connection is made to the recent papers of the second author on the Euler equation in the exterior of a Jordan arc.

The influence of boundary conditions on the contact problem in a 3D Navier-Stokes Flow

We consider the free fall of a sphere above a wall in a viscous incompressible fluid. We investigate the influence of boundary conditions on the finite-time occurrence of contact between the sphere and the wall. We prove that slip boundary conditions enable to circumvent the "no-collision" paradox associated with no-slip boundary conditions. We also examine the case of mixed boundary conditions.

The Two Dimensional Euler Equations on Singular Exterior Domains

This paper is a follow-up of article [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], on the existence of global weak solutions to the two dimensional Euler equations in singular domains. In [Gerard-Varet and Lacave, ARMA 2013], we have established the existence of weak solutions for a large class of bounded domains, with initial vorticity in $L^p$ ($p>1$). For unbounded domains, we have proved a similar result only when the initial vorticity is in $L^p_{c}$ ($p>2$) and when the domain is the exterior of a single obstacle. The goal here is to retrieve these two restrictions: we consider general initial vorticity in $L^1\cap L^p$ ($p>1$), outside an arbitrary number of obstacles (not reduced to points).

Multi-scale analysis of compressible viscous and rotating fluids

We study a singular limit for the compressible Navier-Stokes system when the Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to certain powers of a small parameter $\ep$. If the Rossby number dominates the Mach number, the limit problem is represented by the 2-D incompressible Navier-Stokes system describing the horizontal motion of vertical averages of the velocity field. If they are of the same order then the limit problem turns out to be a linear, 2-D equation with a unique radially symmetric solution. The effect of the centrifugal force is taken into account.

Quasineutral limit of the Euler-Poisson system for ions in a domain with boundaries

We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.

Effective boundary condition at a rough surface starting from a slip condition

We consider the homogenization of the Navier-Stokes equation, set in a channel with a rough boundary, of small amplitude and wavelength $ε$. It was shown recently that, for any non-degenerate roughness pattern, and for any reasonable condition imposed at the rough boundary, the homogenized boundary condition in the limit $ε= 0$ is always no-slip. We give in this paper error estimates for this homogenized no-slip condition, and provide a more accurate effective boundary condition, of Navier type. Our result extends those obtained in previous works, in which the special case of a Dirichlet condition at the rough boundary was examined.
