Linearity of Free Resolutions of Monomial Ideals

We study monomial ideals with linear presentation or partially linear resolution. We give combinatorial characterizations of linear presentation for square-free ideals of degree 3, and for primary ideals whose resolutions are linear except for the last step (the "almost linear" case). We also give sharp bounds on Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and numbers of generators in some cases. It is a basic observation that linearity properties are inherited by the restriction of an ideal to a subset of variables, and we study when the converse holds. We construct fractal examples of almost linear primary ideals with relatively few generators related to the Sierpiński triangle. Our results also lead to classes of highly connected simplicial complexes $Δ$ that can not be extended to the complete $\dim Δ$-skeleton of the simplex on the same variables by shelling.

Residual Intersections of $2\times n$ Determinantal Ideals

Schemes defined by residual intersections have been extensively studied in the case when they are Cohen-Macaulay, but this is a very restrictive condition. In this paper we make the first study of a class of natural examples far from satisfying this condition, the rank 1 loci of generic $2\times n$ matrices. Here we compute their depths and many other properties. These computations require a number of novel tools.

Syzygies of torsion bundles and the geometry of the level l modular variety over M_g

We formulate, and in some cases prove, three statements concerning the purity or, more generally the naturality of the resolution of various rings one can attach to a generic curve of genus g and a torsion point of order l in its Jacobian. These statements can be viewed an analogues of Green's Conjecture and we verify them computationally for bounded genus. We then compute the cohomology class of the corresponding non-vanishing locus in the moduli space R_{g,l} of twisted level l curves of genus g and use this to derive results about the birational geometry of R_{g, l}. For instance, we prove that R_{g,3} is a variety of general type when g>11 and the Kodaira dimension of R_{11,3} is greater than or equal to 19. In the last section we explain probabilistically the unexpected failure of the Prym-Green conjecture in genus 8 and level 2.

Twenty Points in P^3

Using the possibility of computationally determining points on a finite cover of a unirational variety over a finite field, we determine all possibilities for direct Gorenstein linkages between general sets of points in P^3 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. As a consequence we show that a general set of d points is glicci (that is, in the Gorenstein linkage class of a complete intersection) if d <= 33 or d=37,38. Computer algebra plays an essential role in the proof. The case of 20 points had been an outstanding problem in the area for a dozen years.

Decomposition of Monomial Algebras: Applications and Algorithms

Considering finite extensions K[A] \subseteq K[B] of positive affine semigroup rings over a field K we have developed in [1] an algorithm to decompose K[B] as a direct sum of monomial ideals in K[A]. By computing the regularity of homogeneous semigroup rings from the decomposition we have confirmed the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture in a range of new cases not tractable by standard methods. Here we first illustrate this technique and its implementation in our Macaulay2 package MonomialAlgebras by computing the decomposition and the regularity step by step for an explicit example. We then focus on ring-theoretic properties of simplicial semigroup rings. From the characterizations given in [1] we develop and prove explicit algorithms testing properties like Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein, normal, and seminormal, all of which imply the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture. All algorithms are implemented in our Macaulay2 package.

Betti Numbers of Syzygies and Cohomology of Coherent Sheaves

The Betti numbers of a graded module over the polynomial ring form a table of numerical invariants that refines the Hilbert polynomial. A sequence of papers sparked by conjectures of Boij and Söderberg have led to the characterization of the possible Betti tables up to rational multiples---that is, to the rational cone generated by the Betti tables. We will summarize this work by describing the cone and the closely related cone of cohomology tables of vector bundles on projective space, and we will give new, simpler proofs of some of the main results. We also explain some of the applications of the theory, including the one that originally motivated the conjectures of Boij and Söderberg, a proof of the Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke and Srinivasan.

Decomposition of semigroup algebras

Let A \subseteq B be cancellative abelian semigroups, and let R be an integral domain. We show that the semigroup ring R[B] can be decomposed, as an R[A]-module, into a direct sum of R[A]-submodules of the quotient ring of R[A]. In the case of a finite extension of positive affine semigroup rings we obtain an algorithm computing the decomposition. When R[A] is a polynomial ring over a field we explain how to compute many ring-theoretic properties of R[B] in terms of this decomposition. In particular we obtain a fast algorithm to compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of homogeneous semigroup rings. As an application we confirm the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture in a range of new cases. Our algorithms are implemented in the Macaulay2 package MonomialAlgebras.

The Banks of the Cohomology River

We give sharp bounds on the vanishing of the cohomology of a tensor product of vector bundles on the n-dimensional projective space in terms of the vanishing of the cohomology of the factors. For this purpose we introduce regularity indices generalizing the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. As an application we give a sufficient condition for a vector bundle to have an unobstructed deformation theory that depends only on the cohomology table of the bundle. We construct complete families of bundles with such cohomology tables.

Stabilization of the Regularity of Powers of An Ideal

When M is a finitely generated graded module over a standard graded algebra S and I is an ideal of S, it is known from work of Cutkosky, Herzog, Kodiyalam, Römer, Trung and Wang that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of I^mM has the form dm+e when m >> 0. We give an explicit bound on the m$for which this is true, under the hypotheses that I is generated in a single degree and M/IM has finite length, and we explore the phenomena that occur when these hypotheses are not satisfied. Finally, we prove a regularity bound for a reduced, equidimensional projective scheme of codimension 2 that is similar to the bound in the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture [1984], under the additional hypotheses that the scheme lies on a quadric and has nice singularities.

The Existence of Pure Free Resolutions

Let d1,...,dn be a strictly increasing sequence of integers. Boij and Söderberg [arXiv:math/0611081] have conjectured the existence of a graded module M of finite length over any polynomial ring K[x_1,..., x_n], whose minimal free resolution is pure of type (d1,...,dn), in the sense that its i-th syzygies are generated in degree di. In this paper we prove a stronger statement, in characteristic zero: Such modules not only exist, but can be taken to be GL(n)-equivariant. In fact, we give two different equivariant constructions, and we construct pure resolutions over exterior algebras and Z/2-graded algebras as well. The constructions use the combinatorics of Schur functors and Bott's Theorem on the direct images of equivariant vector bundles on Grassmann varieties.

Sheaf Cohomology and Free Resolutions over Exterior Algebras

In this paper we study the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand (BGG) correspondence linking sheaves on a projective space to graded modules over an exterior algebra. We give an explicit construction of a Beilinson monad for a sheaf on projective space. The explicitness allows us to to prove two conjectures about the morphisms in the monad. We also construct all the monads for a sheaf that can be built from sums of line bundles. A large subclass, containing many monads introduced by others, are uniquely characterized by simple numerical data. Our methods also yield an efficient method for machine computation of the cohomology of sheaves. Along the way we study minimal free resolutions over an exterior algebra. For example, we show that such resolutions are eventually dominated by their "linear parts" in the sense that erasing all terms of degree $>1$ in the complex yields a new complex which is eventually exact. This paper is a joint, extended version of papers previously written by Eisenbud-Schreyer and by Fløystad seperately.
