Pauli-Fierz mass term in modified Plebanski gravity

We study SO(4) BF theory plus a general quadratic potential, which describes a bi- metric theory of gravity. We identify the profile of the potential leading to a Pauli-Fierz mass term for the massive graviton, thereby avoiding the linearized ghost. We include the Immirzi parameter in our analysis, and find that the mass of the second graviton depends on it. At the non-perturbative level, we find a situation similar to genuine bi-gravities: even choosing the Pauli-Fierz mass term, the ghost mode propagates through the interactions. We present some simple potentials leading to two and three degrees of freedom, and discuss the difficulties of finding a ghost-free bi-gravity with seven degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss alternative reality conditions for the case of SO(3,1) BF theory, relevant for Lorentzian signature, and give a new solution to the compatibility equation.

Scalar-Tensor theories from $Λ(ϕ)$ Plebanski gravity

We study a modification of the Plebanski action, which generically corresponds to a bi-metric theory of gravity, and identify a subclass which is equivalent to the Bergmann-Wagoner-Nordtvedt class of scalar-tensor theories. In this manner, scalar-tensor theories are displayed as constrained BF theories. We find that in this subclass, there is no need to impose reality of the Urbantke metrics, as also the theory with real bivectors is a scalar-tensor theory with a real Lorentzian metric. Furthermore, while under the former reality conditions instabilities can arise from a wrong sign of the scalar mode kinetic term, we show that such problems do not appear if the bivectors are required to be real. Finally, we discuss how matter can be coupled to these theories. The phenomenology of scalar field dark matter arises naturally within this framework.

Expanding perfect fluid generalizations of the C-metric

We reexamine Petrov type D gravitational fields generated by a perfect fluid with spatially homogeneous energy density and in which the flow lines form a timelike non-shearing and non-rotating congruence. It is shown that the anisotropic such spacetimes, which comprise the vacuum C-metric as a limit case, can have \emph{non-zero} expansion, contrary to the conclusion in the original investigation by Barnes (Gen. Rel. Grav. 4, 105 (1973)). This class consists of cosmological models with generically one and at most two Killing vectors. We construct their line element and discuss some important properties. The methods used in this investigation incite to deduce testable criteria regarding shearfree normality and staticity op Petrov type $D$ spacetimes in general, which we add in an appendix.
