Contragredient representations and characterizing the local Langlands correspondence

We consider the question: what is the contragredient in terms of L-homomorphisms? We conjecture that it corresponds to the Chevalley automorphism of the L-group, and prove this in the case of real groups. The proof uses a characterization of the local Langlands correspondence over R. We also consider the related notion of Hermitian dual, in the case of GL(n,R).

Parameters for Twisted Representations

The study of Hermitian forms on a real reductive group $G$ gives rise, in the unequal rank case, to a new class of Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials. These are associated with an outer automorphism $δ$ of $G$, and are related to representations of the extended group $<G,δ>$. These polynomials were defined geometrically by Lusztig and Vogan in "Quasisplit Hecke Algebras and Symmetric Spaces", Duke Math. J. 163 (2014), 983--1034. In order to use their results to compute the polynomials, one needs to describe explicitly the extension of representations to the extended group. This paper analyzes these extensions, and thereby gives a complete algorithm for computing the polynomials. This algorithm is being implemented in the Atlas of Lie Groups and Representations software.

Translation principle for Dirac index

Let $G$ be a finite cover of a closed connected transpose-stable subgroup of $GL(n,\bR)$ with complexified Lie algebra $\frg$. Let $K$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G$, and assume that $G$ and $K$ have equal rank. We prove a translation principle for the Dirac index of virtual $(\frg,K)$-modules. As a byproduct, to each coherent family of such modules, we attach a polynomial on the dual of the compact Cartan subalgebra of $\frg$. This ``index polynomial'' generates an irreducible representation of the Weyl group contained in the coherent continuation representation. We show that the index polynomial is the exact analogue on the compact Cartan subgroup of King's character polynomial. The character polynomial was defined in \cite{K1} on the maximally split Cartan subgroup, and it was shown to be equal to the Goldie rank polynomial up to a scalar multiple. In the case of representations of Gelfand-Kirillov dimension at most half the dimension of $G/K$, we also conjecture an explicit relationship between our index polynomial and the multiplicities of the irreducible components occuring in the associated cycle of the corresponding coherent family.

Hecke algebras and involutions in Weyl groups

For any two involutions y,w in a Weyl group (y\le w), let P_{y,w} be the polynomial defined in [KL]. In this paper we define a new polynomial P^σ_{y,w} whose i-th coefficient is a_i-b_i where the i-th coefficient of P_{y,w} is a_i+b_i (a_i,b_i are natural numbers). These new polynomials are of interest for the theory of unitary representations of complex reductive groups. We present an algorithm for computing these polynomials.
