Hot Super-Earths with Hydrogen Atmospheres: A Model Explaining Their Paradoxical Existence

In this paper we propose a new mechanism that could explain the survival of hydrogen atmospheres on some hot super-Earths. We argue that on close-orbiting tidally-locked super-Earths the tidal forces with the orbital and rotational centrifugal forces can partially confine the atmosphere on the nightside. Assuming a super terran body with an atmosphere dominated by volcanic species and a large hydrogen component, the heavier molecules can be shown to be confined within latitudes of $\lesssim 80^{\circ}$ whilst the volatile hydrogen is not. Because of this disparity the hydrogen has to slowly diffuse out into the dayside where XUV irradiation destroys it. For this mechanism to take effect it is necessary for the exoplanet to become tidally locked before losing the totality of its hydrogen envelop. Consequently, for super-Earths with this proposed configuration it is possible to solve the tidal-locking and mass-loss timescales in order to constrain their formation `birth' masses. Our model predicts that 55 Cancri e formed with a day-length between approximately $17-18.5$ hours and an initial mass less than $\rm \sim12 M_{\oplus}$ hence allowing it to become tidally locked before the complete destruction of its atmosphere. For comparison, CoRoT-7b, an exoplanet with very similar properties to 55 Cancri e but lacking an atmosphere, formed with a day-length significantly different from $\sim 20.5$ hours whilst also having an initial mass smaller than $\rm \sim9 M_{\oplus}$

The Bimodal Distribution in Exoplanet Radii: Considering Varying Core Compositions and $\rm H_{2}$ Envelope's Sizes

Several models have been introduced in order to explain the radius distribution in exoplanet radii observed by Fulton et al. (2017) with one peak at $\rm \sim 1.3 R_{\oplus} $ the other at $\rm \sim 2.4 R_{\oplus} $ and the minimum at $\rm \sim 1.75R_{\oplus} $. In this paper we focus on the hypothesis that the exoplanet size distribution is caused by stellar XUV-induced atmospheric loss. We evolve $10^{6}$ synthetic exoplanets by exposing them to XUV irradiation from synthetic ZAMS stars. For each planet we set a different interior composition which ranged from $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ Fe (very dense) through $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ $\rm MgSiO_{3}$ (average density) and to $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ $\rm H_{2}O$ ice (low density) with varying hydrogen envelop sizes which varied from $\rm 0 \: wt\%$ (a negligible envelop) to $\rm 100 \: wt\%$ (a negligible core). Our simulations were able to replicate the bimodal distribution in exoplanet radii. We argue that in order to reproduce the distribution by Fulton et al. (2017) it is mandatory for there to be a paucity of exoplanets with masses above $\rm \sim 8M_{\oplus}$. Furthermore, our best-fit result predicts an initial flat distribution in exoplanet occurrence for $\rm M_{P} \lesssim 8M_{\oplus}$ with a strong deficiency for planets with $\rm \lesssim 3M_{\oplus}$. Our results are consistent with the $\rm \sim 1.3R_{\oplus}$ radius peak mostly encompassing denuded exoplanets whilst the $\rm \sim 2.4R_{\oplus}$ radius peak mainly comprising exoplanets with large hydrogen envelops

The GAPS Programme at TNG XXVIII -- A pair of hot-Neptunes orbiting the young star TOI-942

Both young stars and multi-planet systems are primary objects that allow us to study, understand and constrain planetary formation and evolution theories. We validate the physical nature of two Neptune-type planets transiting TOI-942 (TYC 5909-319-1), a previously unacknowledged young star (50+30-20 Myr) observed by the TESS space mission in Sector 5. Thanks to a comprehensive stellar characterization, TESS light curve modelling and precise radial-velocity measurements, we validated the planetary nature of the TESS candidate and detect an additional transiting planet in the system on a larger orbit. From photometric and spectroscopic observations we performed an exhaustive stellar characterization and derived the main stellar parameters. TOI-942 is a relatively active K2.5V star (logR'hk = -4.17+-0.01) with rotation period Prot = 3.39+-0.01 days, a projected rotation velocity vsini=13.8+-0.5 km/s and a radius of ~0.9 Rsun. We found that the inner planet, TOI-942b, has an orbital period Pb=4.3263+-0.0011 days, a radius Rb=4.242-0.313+0.376 Rearth and a mass upper limit of 16 Mearth at 1-sigma confidence level. The outer planet, TOI-942c, has an orbital period Pc=10.1605-0.0053+0.0056 days, a radius Rc=4.793-0.351+0.410 Rearth and a mass upper limit of 37 Mearth at 1-sigma confidence level.
