Probing the gravitational wave background from cosmic strings with LISA

Cosmic string networks offer one of the best prospects for detection of cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The combined incoherent GW emission of a large number of string loops leads to a stochastic GW background (SGWB), which encodes the properties of the string network. In this paper we analyze the ability of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to measure this background, considering leading models of the string networks. We find that LISA will be able to probe cosmic strings with tensions $Gμ\gtrsim \mathcal{O}(10^{-17})$, improving by about $6$ orders of magnitude current pulsar timing arrays (PTA) constraints, and potentially $3$ orders of magnitude with respect to expected constraints from next generation PTA observatories. We include in our analysis possible modifications of the SGWB spectrum due to different hypotheses regarding cosmic history and the underlying physics of the string network. These include possible modifications in the SGWB spectrum due to changes in the number of relativistic degrees of freedom in the early Universe, the presence of a non-standard equation of state before the onset of radiation domination, or changes to the network dynamics due to a string inter-commutation probability less than unity. In the event of a detection, LISA's frequency band is well-positioned to probe such cosmic events. Our results constitute a thorough exploration of the cosmic string science that will be accessible to LISA.

Counting the degrees of freedom of generalized Galileons

We consider Galileon models on curved spacetime, as well as the counterterms introduced to maintain the second-order nature of the field equations of these models when both the metric and the scalar are made dynamical. Working in a gauge invariant framework, we first show how all the third-order time derivatives appearing in the field equations -- both metric and scalar -- of a Galileon model or one defined by a given counterterm can be eliminated to leave field equations which contain at most second-order time derivatives of the metric and of the scalar. The same is shown to hold for arbitrary linear combinations of such models, as well as their k-essence-like/Horndeski generalizations. This supports the claim that the number of degrees of freedom in these models is only 3, counting 2 for the graviton and 1 for the scalar. We comment on the arguments given previously in support of this claim. We then prove that this number of degrees of freedom is strictly less that 4 in one particular such model by carrying out a full-fledged Hamiltonian analysis. In contrast to previous results, our analyses do not assume any particular gauge choice of restricted applicability.

Radio Broadcasts from Superconducting Strings

Superconducting cosmic strings can give transient electromagnetic signatures that we argue are most evident at radio frequencies. We investigate the three different kinds of radio bursts from cusps, kinks, and kink-kink collisions on superconducting strings. We find that the event rate is dominated by kink bursts in a range of parameters that are of observational interest, and can be quite high (several a day at 1 Jy flux) for a canonical set of parameters. In the absence of events, the search for radio transients can place stringent constraints on superconducting cosmic strings.

Constraints on the fundamental string coupling from B-mode experiments

We study signatures of cosmic superstring networks containing strings of multiple tensions and Y-junctions, on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarisation spectra. Focusing on the crucial role of the string coupling constant $g_s$, we show that the number density and energy density of the scaling network are dominated by different types of string in the $g_s \sim 1$ and $g_s \ll 1$ limits. This can lead to an observable shift in the position of the B-mode peak --- a distinct signal leading to a direct constraint on $g_s$. We forecast the joint bounds on $g_s$ and the fundamental string tension $μ_F$ from upcoming and future CMB polarisation experiments, as well as the signal to noise in detecting the difference between B-mode signals in the limiting cases of large and small $g_s$. We show that such a detectable shift is within reach of planned experiments.

From k-essence to generalised Galileons

We determine the most general scalar field theories which have an action that depends on derivatives of order two or less, and have equations of motion that stay second order and lower on flat space-time. We show that those theories can all be obtained from linear combinations of Lagrangians made by multiplying a particular form of the Galileon Lagrangian by an arbitrary scalar function of the scalar field and its first derivatives. We also obtain curved space-time extensions of those theories which have second order field equations for both the metric and the scalar field. This provide the most general extension, under the condition that field equations stay second order, of k-essence, Galileons, k-Mouflage as well as of the kinetically braided scalars. It also gives the most general action for a scalar classicalizer, which has second order field equations. We discuss the relation between our construction and the Euler hierachies of Fairlie et al, showing in particular that Euler hierachies allow one to obtain the most general theory when the latter is shift symmetric. As a simple application of our formalism, we give the covariantized version of the conformal Galileon.

Inflation and primordial non-Gaussianities of "generalized Galileons"

We set up cosmological perturbation theory and study the cosmological implications of the so-called ``generalized Galileon'' developed in \cite{Deffayet:2011gz,horndeski}. This is the most general scalar field theory whose Lagrangian contains derivatives up to second order while keeping second order equations of motion, and contains as sub-cases $k$-inflation, $G$-inflation and many other models. We calculate the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation, finding a modification of the usual consistency relation of the tensor-to-scalar ratio in $k$-inflation or perfect fluid models. Finally we also calculate the bispectrum, which contains no new shapes beyond those of $k$-inflation.

Scaling configurations of cosmic superstring networks and their cosmological implications

We study the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarisation spectra sourced by multi-tension cosmic superstring networks. First we obtain solutions for the characteristic length scales and velocities associated with the evolution of a network of F-D strings, allowing for the formation of junctions between strings of different tensions. We find two distinct regimes describing the resulting scaling distributions for the relative densities of the different types of strings, depending on the magnitude of the fundamental string coupling g_s. In one of them, corresponding to the value of the coupling being of order unity, the network's stress-energy power spectrum is dominated by populous light F and D strings, while the other regime, at smaller values of g_s, has the spectrum dominated by rare heavy D strings. These regimes are seen in the CMB anisotropies associated with the network. We focus on the dependence of the shape of the B-mode polarisation spectrum on g_s and show that measuring the peak position of the B-mode spectrum can point to a particular value of the string coupling. Finally, we assess how this result, along with pulsar bounds on the production of gravitational waves from strings, can be used to constrain a combination of g_s and the fundamental string tension mu_F. Since CMB and pulsar bounds constrain different combinations of the string tensions and densities, they result in distinct shapes of bounding contours in the (mu_F, g_s) parameter plane, thus providing complementary constraints on the properties of cosmic superstrings.

Light from Cosmic Strings

The time-dependent metric of a cosmic string leads to an effective interaction between the string and photons - the "gravitational Aharonov-Bohm" effect -- and causes cosmic strings to emit light. We evaluate the radiation of pairs of photons from cosmic strings and find that the emission from cusps, kinks and kink-kink collisions occurs with a flat spectrum at all frequencies up to the string scale. Further, cusps emit a beam of photons, kinks emit along a curve, and the emission at a kink-kink collision is in all directions. The emission of light from cosmic strings could provide an important new observational signature of cosmic strings that is within reach of current experiments for a range of string tensions.

Multi-field DBI inflation: introducing bulk forms and revisiting the gravitational wave constraints

We study multi-field Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation models, taking into account the NS-NS and R-R bulk fields present in generic flux compactifications. We compute the second-order action, which governs the behaviour of linear cosmological perturbations, as well as the third-order action, which can be used to calculate non-Gaussianities in these models. Remarkably, for scalar-type perturbations, we show that the contributions due to the various form fields exactly cancel in both the second- and third-order actions. Primordial perturbations and their non-Gaussianities are therefore unaffected by the presence of form fields and our previous results are unmodified. We also study vector-type perturbations associated with the U(1) gauge field confined on the D3-brane, and discuss whether their quantum fluctuations can be amplified. Finally, we revisit the gravitational wave constraints on DBI inflation and show that an ultra-violet DBI multi-field scenario is still compatible with data, in contrast with the single field case, provided there is a transfer from entropy into adiabatic perturbations.

Triplication of SU(5) monopoles

We investigate all spherically symmetric fundamental monopole solutions with fixed topological charge in the SU(5) --> SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)/Z_3xZ_2 symmetry breaking. We find that there is three-fold replication of the monopoles. The three copies correspond to bound states with ``monopole clouds'' arising from the non-Abelian nature of the SU(3) factor. The triplication of monopoles could help us understand the observed family structure of standard model particles.
