On the locally rotationally symmetric Einstein-Maxwell perfect fluid

We examine the stability of an Einstein-Maxwell perfect fluid configuration with a privileged direction of symmetry by means of a $1+1+2$-tetrad formalism. We use this formalism to cast, in a quasi linear symmetric hyperbolic form the equations describing the evolution of the system. This hyperbolic reduction is used to discuss the stability of solutions of the linear perturbation. By restricting the analysis to isotropic fluid configurations, we made use of a constant electrical conductivity coefficient for the fluid (plasma), and the nonlinear stability for the case of an infinitely conducting plasma is also considered. As a result of this analysis we provide a complete classification and characterization of various stable and unstable configurations. We found in particular that in many cases the stability conditions is strongly determined by the constitutive equations by means of the square of the velocity of sound and the electric conductivity, and a threshold for the emergence of the instability appears in both contracting and expanding systems.

Deformations of three-dimensional metrics

We examine three-dimensional metric deformations based on a tetrad transformation through the action the matrices of scalar fields. We describe by this approach to deformation the results obtained by Coll et al. in [1], where it is stated that any three--dimensional metric was locally obtained as a deformation of a constant curvature metric parameterized by a 2--form.To this aim, we construct the corresponding deforming matrices and provide their classification according to the properties of the scalar $σ$ and of the vector $\mathbf{s}$ used in [1] to deform the initial metric. The resulting causal structure of the deformed geometries is examined, too. Finally we apply our results to a spherically symmetric three geometry and to a space sector of Kerr metric.

Perfect fluid tori orbiting Kehagias-Sfetsos naked singularities

We construct perfect fluid tori in the field of the Kehagias-Sfetsos (K-S) naked singularity representing spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the modified Hořava quantum gravity that is characterized by a dimensionless parameter $ωM^2$, combining the gravitational mass parameter $M$ of the spacetime with the Hořava parameter $ω$ reflecting the role of the quantum corrections. In dependence on the value of $ωM^2$, the K-S naked singularities demonstrate a variety of qualitatively different behavior of their circular geodesics that is fully reflected in the properties of the toroidal structures. In all of the K-S naked singularity spacetimes the tori are located above an "antigravity" sphere where matter can stay in stable equilibrium position, that is relevant for the stability of the orbiting fluid toroidal accretion structures.

Counterexample of the magnetorotational instability in two-dimensional axial symmetry

We analyze a linear perturbation scheme for a two-dimensional background plasma, which is rotating with a differential frequency and is embedded in a poloidal magnetic field. The main two assumptions of the present study, which in turn are related, are that the plasma profile is axially symmetric, both in the background and the perturbation approximation, where the azimuthal magnetic field is requested to vanish identically and secondly the angular frequency on the magnetic surface function only still holds in the non-stationary regime, which, on the steady background equilibrium, is ensured by the validity of the corotation theorem (Ferraro 1937). Indeed, such a restriction of the model is rather natural and it implies that the azimuthal component of the linear plasma shift is reabsorbed in the expression for the non stationary electric field (in principle, at any order of approximation) and can no longer provide a non-zero azimuthal component of the magnetic tension field. As a result, the Magneto-rotational instability is suppressed and the magnetic field has the effect to stabilize the plasma configuration with respect to the pure hydrodynamical case.

Equatorial circular orbits of neutral test particles in the Kerr--Newman spacetime

We present a detailed analysis of the orbital circular motion of electrically neutral test particles on the equatorial plane of the Kerr-Newman spacetime. Many details of the motion in the cases of black hole and naked singularity sources are pointed out. We identify four different types of orbital regions, which depend on the properties of the orbital angular momentum, and define four different kinds of naked singularities, according to the values of the charge-to-mass ratio of the source. It is shown that the presence of a particular type of counter-rotating test particles is sufficient to uniquely identify naked singularities. It is pointed out that the structure of the stability regions can be used to differentiate between black holes and naked singularities.

On charged boson stars

We study static, spherically symmetric, self-gravitating systems minimally coupled to a scalar field with U(1) gauge symmetry: charged boson stars. We find numerical solutions to the EinsteinMaxwell equations coupled to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation. It is shown that bound stable configurations exist only for values of the coupling constant less than or equal to a certain critical value. The metric coefficients and the relevant physical quantities such as the total mass and charge, turn out to be in general bound functions of the radial coordinate, reaching their maximum values at a critical value of the scalar field at the origin. We discuss the stability problem both from the quantitative and qualitative point of view. Taking properly into account the electromagnetic contribution to the total mass, the stability issue is faced also following an indication of the binding energy per particle, verifying then the existence of configurations having positive binding energy: objects apparently bound can be unstable against small perturbations, in full analogy with what observed in the mass-radius relation of neutron stars.

The orthogonal gamma-ray burst model

We explore the analogy between a rotating magnetized black hole and an axisymmetric pulsar and derive its electromagnetic spindown after its formation in the core collapse of a supermassive star. The spindown shows two characteristic phases, an early Blandford-Znajek phase that lasts a few hundred seconds, and a late pulsar-like afterglow phase that lasts much longer. During the first phase, the spindown luminosity decreases almost exponentially, whereas during the afterglow phase it decreases as t^{-a} with 1<a<1,5. We associate our findings with long duration gamma-ray bursts (GRB) and compare with observations.

Neutron star equilibrium configurations within a fully relativistic theory with strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions

We formulate the equations of equilibrium of neutron stars taking into account strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravitational interactions within the framework of general relativity. The nuclear interactions are described by the exchange of the sigma, omega, and rho virtual mesons. The equilibrium conditions are given by our recently developed theoretical framework based on the Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations along with the constancy of the general relativistic Fermi energies of particles, the "Klein potentials", throughout the configuration. The equations are solved numerically in the case of zero temperatures and for selected parametrization of the nuclear models. The solutions lead to a new structure of the star: a positively charged core at supranuclear densities surrounded by an electronic distribution of thickness $\sim \hbar/(m_e c)$ of opposite charge, as well as a neutral crust at lower densities. Inside the core there is a Coulomb potential well of depth $\sim m_πc^2/e$. The constancy of the Klein potentials in the transition from the core to the crust, impose the presence of an overcritical electric field $\sim (m_π/m_e)^2 E_c$, the critical field being $E_c=m^2_e c^3/(e \hbar)$. The electron chemical potential and the density decrease, in the boundary interface, until values $μ^{\rm crust}_e < μ^{\rm core}_e$ and $ρ_{\rm crust}<ρ_{\rm core}$. For each central density, an entire family of core-crust interface boundaries and, correspondingly, an entire family of crusts with different mass and thickness, exist. The configuration with $ρ_{\rm crust}=ρ_{\rm drip}\sim 4.3\times 10^{11}$ g/cm$^3$ separates neutron stars with and without inner crust. We present here the novel neutron star mass-radius for the case $ρ_{\rm crust}=ρ_{\rm drip}$ and compare and contrast it with the one obtained from the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff treatment.

On the evolution equations for ideal magnetohydrodynamics in curved spacetime

We examine the problem of the construction of a first order symmetric hyperbolic evolution system for the Einstein-Maxwell-Euler system. Our analysis is based on a 1+3 tetrad formalism which makes use of the components of the Weyl tensor as one of the unknowns. In order to ensure the symmetric hyperbolicity of the evolution equations implied by the Bianchi identity, we introduce a tensor of rank 3 corresponding to the covariant derivative of the Faraday tensor. Our analysis includes the case of a perfect fluid with infinite conductivity (ideal magnetohydrodynamics) as a particular subcase.

Equatorial circular motion in Kerr spacetime

We analyze the properties of circular orbits of test particles on the equatorial plane of a rotating central mass whose gravitational field is described by the Kerr spacetime. For rotating black holes and naked singularities we explore all the spatial regions where circular orbits can exist and analyze the behavior of the energy and the angular momentum of the corresponding test particles. In particular, we find all the radii at which a test particle can have zero angular momentum due to the repulsive gravity effects generated by naked singularities. We classify all the stability zones of circular orbits. It is shown that the geometric structure of the stability zones of black holes is completely different from that of naked singularities.

Stability of a self-gravitating homogeneous resistive plasma

In this paper, we analyze the stability of a homogeneous self-gravitating plasma, having a non-zero resistivity. This study provides a generalization of the Jeans paradigm for determining the critical scale above which gravitational collapse is allowed. We start by discussing the stability of an ideal self-gravitating plasma embedded in a constant magnetic field. We outline the existence of an anisotropic feature of the gravitational collapse. In fact, while in the plane orthogonal to the magnetic field the Jeans length is enhanced by the contribution of the magnetic pressure, outside this plane perturbations are governed by the usual Jeans criterium. The anisotropic collapse of a density contrast is sketched in details, suggesting that the linear evolution provides anisotropic initial conditions for the non-linear stage, where this effect could be strongly enforced. The same problem is then faced in the presence of non-zero resistivity and the conditions for the gravitational collapse are correspondingly extended. The relevant feature emerging in this resistive scenario is the cancellation of the collapse anisotropy in weakly conducting plasmas. In this case, the instability of a self-gravitating resistive plasma is characterized by the standard isotropic Jeans length in any directions. The limit of very small resistivity coefficient is finally addressed, elucidating how reminiscence of the collapse anisotropy can be found in the different value of the perturbation frequency inside and outside the plane orthogonal to the magnetic field.

Circular motion in Reissner-Nordström spacetime

We study the motion of neutral test particles along circular orbits in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We use the method of the effective potential with the constants of motion associated to the underlying Killing symmetries. A comparison between the black hole and naked singularity cases is performed. In particular we find that in the naked singularity case for $r<Q^2/M$ no circular orbits can exist, this radius plays a fundamental role in the physics of the naked singularity. For $r>Q^2/M$ and $1<Q/M<\sqrt{9/8}$ there are two stability regions together with a region where all the circular orbits are instable and a zone in which all trajectory are possible but not circular orbits, for $\sqrt{9/8}<Q/M<\sqrt{5}/2$ one stability region and a region where all circular orbits are instable appear, finally for $Q/M>\sqrt{5}/2$ there are all stable circular orbits for $r>Q^2/M$.

Effective potential approach to the motion of massive test particles in Kaluza-Klein gravity

Effective potential for a class of static solutions of Kaluza-Klein equations with three-dimensional spherical symmetry is studied. Test particles motion is analyzed. In attempts to read the obtained results with the experimental data, particular attention is devoted to the Schwarzschild's limit of the four dimensional counterpart of these electromagnetic-free solutions. Massive particles stable circular orbits in particular are studied, and a comparison between the well known results if the Schwarzschild's case and those found for the static higher-dimensional case is performed. A modification of the circular stable orbits is investigated in agreement with the experimental constraints.

Massive test particles motion in Kaluza-Klein gravity

A class of static, vacuum solutions of (free-electromagnetic) Kaluza-Klein equations with three-dimensional spherical symmetry is studied. In order to explore the dynamic in such spacetimes, geodesic equations are obtained and the effective potential for massive test particles is analysed. Particular attention is devoted to the properties of the four dimensional counterpart of these solutions in their Schwarzschild limit. A modification of the circular stable orbits compared with the Schwarzschild case is investigated.
