Gyrofluid analysis of electron $β_e$ effects on collisionless reconnection

The linear and nonlinear evolutions of the tearing instability in a collisionless plasma with a strong guide field are analyzed on the basis of a two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model. The model is valid for a low ion temperature and a finite $β_e$. The finite $β_e$ effect implies a magnetic perturbation along the guide field direction and electron finite Larmor radius effects. A Hamiltonian derivation of the model is presented. A new dispersion relation of the tearing instability is derived for the case $β_e=0$ and tested against numerical simulations. For $β_e \ll 1$ the equilibrium electron temperature is seen to enhance the linear growth rate, whereas we observe a stabilizing role when electron finite Larmor radius effects become more relevant. In the nonlinear phase, a double "faster-than-exponential" growth is observed, similarly to what occurs in the presence of ion finite Larmor radius effects. Energy transfers are analyzed and the conservation laws associated with the Casimir invariants of the model are also discussed. Numerical simulations seem to indicate that finite $β_e$ effects do not produce qualtitative modifications in the structures of the Lagrangian invariants associated with Casimirs of the model.

Visco-Resistive Plasmoid Instability

The plasmoid instability in visco-resistive current sheets is analyzed in both the linear and nonlinear regimes. The linear growth rate and the wavenumber are found to scale as $S^{1/4} {\left( {1 + {P_m}} \right)}^{-5/8}$ and $S^{3/8} {\left( {1 + {P_m}} \right)}^{-3/16}$ with respect to the Lundquist number $S$ and the magnetic Prandtl number $P_m$. Furthermore, the linear layer width is shown to scale as $S^{-1/8} {(1+P_m)}^{1/16}$. The growth of the plasmoids slows down from an exponential growth to an algebraic growth when they enter into the nonlinear regime. In particular, the time-scale of the nonlinear growth of the plasmoids is found to be $τ_{NL} \sim S^{-3/16} {(1 + P_m)^{19/32}}{τ_{A,L}}$. The nonlinear growth of the plasmoids is radically different from the linear one and it is shown to be essential to understand the global current sheet disruption. It is also discussed how the plasmoid instability enables fast magnetic reconnection in visco-resistive plasmas. In particular, it is shown that the recursive plasmoid formation can trigger a collisionless reconnection regime if $S \gtrsim L_{cs} {(ε_c l_k)^{-1}} {(1 + {P_m})^{1/2}}$, where $L_{cs}$ is the half-length of the global current sheet and $l_k$ is the relevant kinetic length scale. On the other hand, if the current sheet remains in the collisional regime, the global (time-averaged) reconnection rate is shown to be $\left\langle {{{\left. {dψ/dt} \right|}_X}} \right\rangle \approx ε_c v_{A,u} B_{u} {(1 + {P_m})^{-1/2}}$, where $ε_c$ is the critical inverse aspect ratio of the current sheet, while $v_{A,u}$ and $B_{u}$ are the Alfvén speed and the magnetic field upstream of the global reconnection layer.

Extended theory of the Taylor problem in the plasmoid-unstable regime

A fundamental problem of forced magnetic reconnection has been solved taking into account the plasmoid instability of thin reconnecting current sheets. In this problem, the reconnection is driven by a small amplitude boundary perturbation in a tearing-stable slab plasma equilibrium. It is shown that the evolution of the magnetic reconnection process depends on the external source perturbation and the microscopic plasma parameters. Small perturbations lead to a slow nonlinear Rutherford evolution, whereas larger perturbations can lead to either a stable Sweet-Parker-like phase or a plasmoid phase. An expression for the threshold perturbation amplitude required to trigger the plasmoid phase is derived, as well as an analytical expression for the reconnection rate in the plasmoid-dominated regime. Visco-resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations complement the analytical calculations. The plasmoid formation plays a crucial role in allowing fast reconnection in a magnetohydrodynamical plasma, and the presented results suggest that it may occur and have profound consequences even if the plasma is tearing-stable.
