Neutral-Current Electroweak Physics and SMEFT Studies at the EIC

We study the potential for precision electroweak (EW) measurements and beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) searches using cross-section asymmetries in neutral-current (NC) deep inelastic scattering at the electron-ion collider (EIC). Our analysis uses a complete and realistic accounting of systematic errors from both theory and experiment and considers the potential of both proton and deuteron beams for a wide range of energies and luminosities. We also consider what can be learned from a possible future positron beam and a potential ten-fold luminosity upgrade of the EIC beyond its initial decade of running. We use the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) framework to parameterize BSM effects and focus on semi-leptonic four-fermion operators, whereas for our precision EW study, we determine how well the EIC can measure the weak mixing angle. New features of our study include the use of an up-to-date detector design of EIC Comprehensive Chromodynamics Experiment (ECCE) and accurate running conditions of the EIC, the simultaneous fitting of beam polarization uncertainties and Wilson coefficients to improve the sensitivity to SMEFT operators, and the inclusion of the weak mixing angle running in our fit template. We find that the EIC can probe BSM operators at scales competitive with and in many cases exceeding LHC Drell-Yan bounds while simultaneously not suffering from degeneracies between Wilson coefficients.

TVID 2: Evaluation of planar-type three-loop self-energy integrals with arbitrary masses

We present TVID 2, a program to numerically evaluate an important class of planar three-loop self-energy master integrals with arbitrary masses. As with the predecessor version (TVID 1) the integrals are separated into a known piece, containing the UV divergencies, and a finite piece that is integrated numerically, implemented in C. The set of master integrals under consideration was found with self-energy diagrams containing two closed fermion loops in mind. Two techniques are employed in deriving the expressions for the finite pieces that are then numerically integrated: (a) Sub-loop dispersion relations in the case of topologies containing sub-bubbles, and (b) a modification of the procedure suggested by Ghinculov for integrals with only sub-loop triangles.

MadMax, or Where Boosted Significances Come From

In an era of increasingly advanced experimental analysis techniques it is crucial to understand which phase space regions contribute a signal extraction from backgrounds. Based on the Neyman-Pearson lemma we compute the maximum significance for a signal extraction as an integral over phase space regions. We then study to what degree boosted Higgs strategies benefit ZH and ttH searches and which transverse momenta of the Higgs are most promising. We find that Higgs and top taggers are the appropriate tools, but would profit from a targeted optimization towards smaller transverse momenta. MadMax is available as an add-on to Madgraph5.
