Regularization of Limited Memory Quasi-Newton Methods for Large-Scale Nonconvex Minimization

This paper deals with regularized Newton methods, a flexible class of unconstrained optimization algorithms that is competitive with line search and trust region methods and potentially combines attractive elements of both. The particular focus is on combining regularization with limited memory quasi-Newton methods by exploiting the special structure of limited memory algorithms. Global convergence of regularization methods is shown under mild assumptions and the details of regularized limited memory quasi-Newton updates are discussed including their compact representations. Numerical results using all large-scale test problems from the CUTEst collection indicate that our regularized version of L-BFGS is competitive with state-of-the-art line search and trust-region L-BFGS algorithms and previous attempts at combining L-BFGS with regularization, while potentially outperforming some of them, especially when nonmonotonicity is involved.

Engineering Quantum States, Nonlinear Measurements, and Anomalous Diffusion by Imaging

We show that well-separated quantum superposition states, measurements of strongly nonlinear observables, and quantum dynamics driven by anomalous diffusion can all be achieved for single atoms or molecules by imaging spontaneous photons that they emit via resonance florescence. To generate anomalous diffusion we introduce continuous measurements driven by Lévy processes, and prove a number of results regarding their properties. In particular we present strong evidence that the only stable Lévy density that can realize a strictly continuous measurement is the Gaussian.

Nonlinear Quantum Dynamics

The vast majority of the literature dealing with quantum dynamics is concerned with linear evolution of the wave function or the density matrix. A complete dynamical description requires a full understanding of the evolution of measured quantum systems, necessary to explain actual experimental results. The dynamics of such systems is intrinsically nonlinear even at the level of distribution functions, both classically as well as quantum mechanically. Aside from being physically more complete, this treatment reveals the existence of dynamical regimes, such as chaos, that have no counterpart in the linear case. Here, we present a short introductory review of some of these aspects, with a few illustrative results and examples.
