Special cosmological models derived from the semiclassical Einstein equation on flat FLRW space-times

This article presents numerical work on a special case of the cosmological semiclassical Einstein equation (SCE). The SCE describes the interaction of relativistic quantum matter by the expected value of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a quantum field with classical gravity. Here we consider a free massless scalar field with general (not necessarily conformal) coupling to curvature. In a cosmological scenario with flat spatial sections for special choices of the initial conditions, we observe a separation of the dynamics of the quantum degrees of freedom from the dynamics of the scale factor, which extends a classical result by Starobinsky to general coupling. For this new equation of fourth order for the dynamics of the scale factor, we study numerical solutions. Typical solutions show a radiation-like Big Bang for the early universe and de Sitter-like expansion for the late universe. We discuss a specific solution to the cosmological horizon problem that can be produced by tuning parameters in the given equation. Although the model proposed here only contains massless matter, we give a preliminary comparison of the obtained cosmology with the $Λ$CDM standard model of cosmology and investigate parameter ranges in which the new models to a certain extent assimilates standard cosmology.

Pseudodifferential Weyl Calculus on (Pseudo-)Riemannian Manifolds

One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that it maps square integrable symbols to Hilbert-Schmidt operators, and that even (resp. odd) polynomials are mapped to even (resp. odd) differential operators. We also present a formula for the corresponding star product and give its asymptotic expansion up to the 4th order in Planck's constant.

Electromagnetic Potential in Pre-Metric Electrodynamics: Causal Structure, Propagators and Quantization

An axiomatic approach to electrodynamics reveals that Maxwell electrodynamics is just one instance of a variety of theories for which the name electrodynamics is justified. They all have in common that their fundamental input are Maxwell's equations $\textrm{d} F = 0$ (or $F = \textrm{d} A$) and $\textrm{d} H = J$ and a constitutive law $H = # F$ which relates the field strength two-form $F$ and the excitation two-form $H$. A local and linear constitutive law defines what is called local and linear pre-metric electrodynamics whose best known application are the effective description of electrodynamics inside media including, e.g., birefringence. We analyze the classical theory of the electromagnetic potential $A$ before we use methods familiar from mathematical quantum field theory in curved spacetimes to quantize it in a locally covariant way. Our analysis of the classical theory contains the derivation of retarded and advanced propagators, the analysis of the causal structure on the basis of the constitutive law (instead of a metric) and a discussion of the classical phase space. This classical analysis sets the stage for the construction of the quantum field algebra and quantum states. Here one sees, among other things, that a microlocal spectrum condition can be formulated in this more general setting.

Global Existence of Solutions of the Semiclassical Einstein Equation for Cosmological Spacetimes

We study the solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes driven by a massive conformally coupled scalar field. In particular, we show that it is possible to give initial conditions at finite time to get a state for the quantum field which gives finite expectation values for the stress-energy tensor. Furthermore, it is possible to control this expectation value by means of a global estimate on regular cosmological spacetimes. The obtained estimates permit to write a theorem about the existence and uniqueness of the local solutions encompassing both the spacetime metric and the matter field simultaneously. Finally, we show that one can always extend local solutions up to a point where the scale factor becomes singular or the Hubble function reaches a critical value $H_c = 180π/G$, which both correspond to a divergence of the scalar curvature, namely a spacetime singularity.

Scale-Invariant Curvature Fluctuations from an Extended Semiclassical Gravity

We present an extension of the semiclassical Einstein equations which couples n-point correlation functions of a stochastic Einstein tensor to the n-point functions of the quantum stress-energy tensor. We apply this extension to calculate the quantum fluctuations during an inflationary period, where we take as a model a massive conformally coupled scalar field on a perturbed de Sitter space and describe how a renormalization independent, almost-scale-invariant power spectrum of the scalar metric perturbation is produced. Furthermore, we discuss how this model yields a natural basis for the calculation of non-Gaussianities of the considered metric fluctuations.

The Semiclassical Einstein Equation on Cosmological Spacetimes

The subject of this thesis is the coupling of quantum fields to a classical gravitational background in a semiclassical fashion. It contains a thorough introduction into quantum field theory on curved spacetime with a focus on the stress-energy tensor and the semiclassical Einstein equation. Basic notions of differential geometry, topology, functional and microlocal analysis, causality and general relativity will be summarised, and the algebraic approach to QFT on curved spacetime will be reviewed. Apart from these foundations, the original research of the author and his collaborators will be presented: Together with Fewster, the author studied the up and down structure of permutations using their decomposition into so-called atomic permutations. The relevance of these results to this thesis is their application in the calculation of the moments of quadratic quantum fields. In a work with Pinamonti, the author showed the local and global existence of solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equation in flat cosmological spacetimes coupled to a scalar field by solving simultaneously for the quantum state and the Hubble function in an integral-functional equation. The theorem is proved with a fixed-point theorem using the continuous functional differentiability and boundedness of the integral kernel of the integral-functional equation. In another work with Pinamonti the author proposed an extension of the semiclassical Einstein equations which couples the moments of a stochastic Einstein tensor to the moments of the quantum stress-energy tensor. In a toy model of a Newtonianly perturbed exponentially expanding spacetime it is shown that the quantum fluctuations of the stress-energy tensor induce an almost scale-invariant power spectrum for the perturbation potential and that non-Gaussianties arise naturally.

Enumerating Permutations by their Run Structure

Motivated by a problem in quantum field theory, we study the up and down structure of circular and linear permutations. In particular, we count the length of the (alternating) runs of permutations by representing them as monomials and find that they can always be decomposed into so-called `atomic' permutations introduced in this work. This decomposition allows us to enumerate the (circular) permutations of a subset of the natural numbers by the length of their runs. Furthermore, we rederive, in an elementary way and using the methods developed here, a result due to Kitaev on the enumeration of valleys.

Hadamard States for the Vector Potential on Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

We develop a quantization scheme for the vector potential on globally hyperbolic spacetimes which realizes it as a locally covariant conformal quantum field theory. This result allows us to employ on a large class of backgrounds, which are asymptotically flat at null infinity, a bulk-to-boundary correspondence procedure in order to identify for the underlying field algebra a distinguished ground state which is of Hadamard form.
