Refractory elements in the gas phase for comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Results. We found that gas-phase silicon was present throughout the Rosetta mission. Furthermore, the presence of sodium and iron atoms near the comet's perihelion confirms that sputtering cannot be the sole release process for refractory elements into the gas phase. Nickel was found to be below the detection limit. The search for parent species of any of the identified gas phase refractories has not been successful. Upper limits for a suite of possible fragment species (SiH, SiC, NaH, etc.) of larger parent and daughter species have been obtained. Furthermore, Si did not exhibit the same drop in signal as do common cometary gases when the spacecraft is pointed away from the nucleus. The combined results suggest that a direct release of elemental species from small grains on the surface of the nucleus or from small grains in the surrounding coma is a more likely explanation than the previous assumption of release via the dissociation of gaseous parent molecules.

Decay and electromagnetic production of strongly coupled quarkonia in pNRQCD

We improve the pNRQCD approach to annihilation processes of heavy quarkonium and make first pNRQCD predictions for exclusive electromagnetic production of heavy quarkonium. We consider strongly coupled quarkonia, i.e., quarkonia that are not Coulombic bound states. Possible strongly coupled quarkonia include excited charmonium and bottomonium states. For these, pNRQCD provides expressions for the decay and exclusive electromagnetic production NRQCD matrix elements that depend on the wavefunctions at the origin and few universal gluon field correlators. We compute electromagnetic decay widths and exclusive production cross sections, and inclusive decay widths into light hadrons for $P$-wave quarkonia at relative order $v^2$ and leading order, respectively. We also compute the decay widths of $2S$ and $3S$ bottomonium states into lepton pairs and their ratios with the inclusive widths into light hadrons at relative order $v^2$.

Dyson-Schwinger Approach to Color-Superconductivity: Effects of Selfconsistent Gluon Dressing

The phase diagram of dense QCD at nonvanishing temperatures and large quark chemical potentials is studied with Dyson-Schwinger equations for 2+1 quark flavors, focusing on color-superconducting phases with 2SC and CFL-like pairing. The truncation scheme of our previous investigations is extended to include the dressing of gluons with selfconsistently determined quarks, i.e., taking into account the dynamical masses and superconducting gaps of the quarks in the gluon polarization. As a consequence the gluon screening is reduced, leading to an enhancement of the critical temperatures of the color-superconducting phases by about a factor of 2 as compared to the case where the gluons are dressed with bare quarks. We also calculate the Debye and Meissner masses of the gluons and show that they are consistent with weak-coupling results.

Point particle motion in topologically nontrivial space-times

It is well known that compactifying a space can break symmetries that are present in the covering space. In this paper we study the effects of such topological symmetry breaking on point-particle motion when the particle is coupled to a massless field on the space. For a torus topology where Lorentz invariance is broken but translation invariance is maintained, particles can move at a constant velocity through the space; however, non-local, velocity-dependent forces arise whenever the particle is accelerated. For a topology where translation invariance is broken, such as the Klein bottle, interactions with the massless field generate an effective potential as a function of position. The potential creates special stable points in the space, and prevents constant velocity motion. This latter would appear to be the generic case. This class of effects may be applicable whenever a localized object moves through a compactified bulk, such as in brane-world cosmology, or some condensed matter systems.

Dyson-Schwinger approach to color superconductivity at finite temperature and density

We investigate the phases of dense QCD matter at finite temperature with Dyson-Schwinger equations for the quark propagator for N_f=2+1 flavors. For the gluon propagator we take a fit to quenched lattice data and add quark-loop effects perturbatively in a hard-thermal-loop--hard-dense-loop approximation. We consider 2SC and CFL-like pairing with chiral up and down quarks and massive strange quarks and present results for the condensates and the phase diagram. We find a dominant CFL phase at chemical potentials larger than 500-600 MeV. At lower values of the chemical potential we find a 2SC phase, which also exists in a small band at higher temperatures for larger chemical potentials. With values of 20-30 MeV, the critical temperatures to the normal phase turn out to be quite small.

Dyson-Schwinger study of chiral density waves in QCD

The formation of inhomogeneous chiral condensates in QCD matter at nonzero density and temperature is investigated for the first time with Dyson-Schwinger equations. We consider two massless quark flavors in a so-called chiral density wave, where scalar and pseudoscalar quark condensates vary sinusoidally along one spatial dimension. We find that the inhomogeneous region covers the major part of the spinodal region of the first-order phase transition which is present when the analysis is restricted to homogeneous phases. The triple point where the inhomogeneous phase meets the homogeneous phases with broken and restored chiral symmetry, respectively, coincides, within numerical accuracy, with the critical point of the homogeneous calculation. At zero temperature, the inhomogeneous phase seems to extend to arbitrarily high chemical potentials, as long as pairing effects are not taken into account.

Effective Gravity and Homogeneous Solutions

Near the singularity, gravity should be modified to an effective theory, in the same sense as with the Euler-Heisenberg electrodynamics. This effective gravity surmounts to higher derivative theory, and as is well known, a much more reacher theory concerning the solution space. On the other hand, as a highly non linear theory, the understanding of this solution space must go beyond the linearized approach. In this talk we will present some results previously published by collaborators and myself, concerning solutions for vacuum spatially homogenous cases of Bianchi types $I$ and $VII_A$. These are the anisotropic generalizations of the cosmological spatially "flat", and "open" models respectively. The solutions present isotropisation in a weak sense depending on the initial condition. Also, depending on the initial condition, singular solutions are obtained.

Isotropisation of Quadratic Gravity: Scalar and Tensor Components

It is believed that soon after the Planck era, spacetime should have a semi-classical nature. Therefore, it is unavoidable to modify the theory of General Relativity or look for alternative theories of gravitation. An interesting possibility found in the literature considers two geometric counter-terms to regularize the divergences of the effective action. These counter-terms are responsible for a higher order derivative metric theory of gravitation. In the present letter we investigate how isotropisation occurs. For this reason a single solution is chosen throughout this article. We obtain perturbatively, by two different methods, that the tensor and scalar components emerge naturally during the isotropisation process. In this sense our result provides a numerical example to Stelle's well known result on classical gravity with higher derivates. Our entire analysis is restricted to the particular Bianchi type $I$ case.

Bianchi $VII_A$ solutions of quadratic gravity

It is believed that soon after the Planck time, Einstein's general relativity theory should be corrected to an effective quadratic theory. Numerical solutions for the anisotropic generalization of the Friedmann "open" model $H^ 3$ for this effective gravity are given. It must be emphasized that although numeric, these solutions are exact in the sense that they depend only on the precision of the machine. The solutions are identified asymptotically in a certain way. It is found solutions which asymptote de Sitter space, Riemann flat space and a singularity. The question of isotropisation of an initially anisotropic Universe is of great importance in the context of cosmology. Although isotropisation is not directly discussed in this present work, we show that sufficiently small anisotropies, do not increase indefinitely according to particular quadratic gravity theories. It can be understood as weak isotropisation, and we stress that this result is strongly dependent on initial conditions.

Bianchi I solutions of effective quadratic gravity

It is believed that soon after the Planck time, Einstein's general relativity theory should be corrected to an effective quadratic theory. Numerical solutions for the anisotropic generalization of the Friedmann "flat" model $E^3$ for this effective gravity are given. It must be emphasized that although numeric, these solutions are exact in the sense that they depend only on the precision of the machine. The solutions are identified asymptotically in a certain sense. It is found solutions which asymptote de Sitter space, Minkowski space and a singularity. This work is a generalization for non diagonal spatial metrics of a previous result obtained by one of us and a collaborator for Bianchi $I$ spaces.

Homogeneous Solutions of Quadratic Gravity

It is believed that soon after the Planck time, Einstein's general relativity theory should be corrected to an effective quadratic theory. In this work we present the 3+1 decomposition for the zero vorticity case for arbitrary spatially homogenous spaces. We specialize for the particular Bianchi $I$ diagonal case. The 3- curvature can be understood as a generalized potential, and the Bianchi $I$ case is a limiting case where this potential is negligible to the dynamics. The spirit should be analogous, in some sense to the BKL solution. In this sense, a better understanding of the Bianchi $I$ case could shed some light into the general Bianchi case.

The Quark Propagator in the NJL Model in a self-consistent 1/Nc Expansion

The quark propagator is calculated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in a self-consistent 1/Nc-expansion at next-to-leading order. The calculations are carried out iteratively in Euclidean space. The chiral quark condensate and its dependence on temperature and chemical potential is calculated directly and compared with the mean-field results. In the chiral limit, we find a second-order phase transition at finite temperature and zero chemical potential, in agreement with universality arguments. At zero temperature and finite chemical potential, the phase transition is first order. In comparison with the mean-field results, the critical temperature and chemical potential are slightly reduced. We determine spectral functions from the Euclidean propagators by employing the Maximum-Entropy-Method (MEM). Thereby quark and meson masses are estimated and decay channels identified. For testing this method, we also apply it to evaluate perturbative spectral functions, which can be calculated directly in Minkowski space. In most cases we find that MEM is able to reproduce the rough features of the spectral functions, but not the details.

Numerical Bianchi I solutions in semi-classical gravitation

It is believed that soon after the Planck era, spacetime should have a semi-classical nature. In this context we consider quantum fields propagating in a classical gravitational field and study the backreaction of these fields, using the expected value of the energy-momentum tensor as source of the gravitational field. According to this theory, the escape from General Relativity theory is unavoidable. Two geometric counter-term are needed to regularize the divergences which come from the expected value. There is a parameter associated to each counter-term and in this work we found numerical solutions of this theory to particular initial conditions, for general Bianchi Type I spaces. We show that even though there are spurious solutions some of them can be considered physical. These physical solutions include de Sitter and Minkowski that are obtained asymptotically.
